mccsHH Issue #6

July 2014

You can find Milton working with the Maintenance Team in the Marine Corps Exchange most days. Meanwhile, we asked him a few questions...

What do you like best about your job? What I like about my job is that I get to build stuff. Like furniture, fixtures.

Favorite food? Salvadorean food.

What’s your dream job? To work in a winery or distillery.

Life philosophy? No matter how many plans you make or how much in control you are, life is always winging it (by Carrol Bryant).

Favorite color? Blue

If you could live anywhere, where? Out in the countryside of Virginia.

Where do you call home? Alexandria City.

What do you do to relax? Watch comedy and action movies.

Your hobby? I collect and work on 1/87 scale 18 wheelers.

If you could have lunch with anyone, who would it be? Neil Peart, the drummer for RUSH.

What is your favorite holiday? Christmas.

What do you plan to do for the Fourth of July? Get together with family and watch the fireworks.

The Education Office at MCCS Henderson Hall is regularly visited by colleges and universities who have made a concerted effort to develop programs that they believe will be unique and appealing to the military community in the National Capital Region (NCR). These schools have excellent online programs and have figured out pretty quickly which programs are more successfully offered online as opposed to in-class only. Given this, it admittedly is not often that one school can offer online programs with something significantly different than another’s.

There are exceptions to this, of course. This Henderson Hall Education Office has had a long successful working relationship with Northern Virginia Community College, who has developed strong online two-year programs to compliment the various brick-and-mortar campus offerings within a relatively comfortable drive of Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall (JBM-HH); with Park University and University of Maryland University College, who maintain lead roles

New School Presence in the Education Office ands Energy

in “portable” degree programs at undergraduate and graduate levels and who offer in-class and hybrid options for their online courses; and with Boston University, who offers highly attractive graduate degree programs in the organizational leadership field.

There are a handful of schools emerging out of the college visitations to the Henderson Hall education office, because of their National Capital Region in-class options, as well as solid online programs. These schools are garnering significant attention from student Marines and the NCR military community.

Argosy University has a campus within four miles of JBM-HH and has recently revamped its in-class and online options that ease the administration issues of their military students. Central Michigan University has held a successful working relationship with the Fort Myer portion of the joint base in the same way that NVCC, Park, UMUC, and Boston have on the HH side. National University offers an academic calendar format that is becoming more and more popular

with the military community. Webster University has a successful history of graduate programs that provide options at the master’s and doctoral levels. Finally, George Washington University has opened a satellite campus in Arlington and put together three programs in fields quite popular with military personnel and a recently-revamped price schedule has suddenly made their tuition prices considerably more feasible.

The Henderson Hall education section has “spruced up,” generating a more active and more pleasant traffic flow in our Bldg. 29 offices, Rms. 204 (the office) and 206 (the College Room). Nine schools are currently sending representation over the course of the work week into Rm. 206, which is now open five days a week from 8 AM – 3:30 PM. There are at least two school representatives at any given time during the week. Those who visit the Henderson Hall education office are encouraged to budget more time to take in both rooms. The education section of MCCS Henderson Hall’s Personal and Professional Development Branch has been infused with a new energy!
