Welcome to the July edition of Darlington Together You may or may not be aware that a new refuse and recycling collection starts in October, where rubbish will be collected one week and recycling the next. We’re keen to get the message out about this to all Darlington residents, so you know how the changes will affect you and what you will be able to recycle. Please visit pages 30 and 31 to find out more. If you’ve had a quick flick through the magazine already, you will undoubtedly notice that there’s a lot of information about what’s on during the summer holidays, which start at the end of this month. There’s always lots taking place in Darlington, and we pride ourselves on the wide range of events taking place – whether your child is interested in arts, sports, or just making new friends. Check out pages 21 to 28 to find out more, or alternatively visit www.whatsonindarlington.co.uk The next event isn’t necessary one for children, but it’s one close to my heart! I’m delighted that Rockcliffe Hall will be hosting the English Senior Open again next month – an event which will see 10,000 people come to Darlington over the course of three days; a wonderful boost for our hotels, shops and restaurants. You can find out more about it on page 19. Cllr Bill Dixon MBE (@billdixondton) Leader of the Council Darlington Borough Council | 17 Welcome to this month’s magazine for Darlington Borough MP’s surgeries Jenny Chapman: MP for Darlington. “We’d encourage businesses to make themost of this event and the potentialcustomer base that will be in the area.”

Bill Dixon, Leader of the Council

Get involved in Park LifeLove Parks Week is a great time to celebrate thework carried out in our parks. Throughout the year, hundreds of volunteers give their time to makeDarlington’s parks a wonderful place to spend time.To find out more about Darlington parks or tovolunteer, visit www.darlington.gov.uk/parks

“As a member of the Friends of South Park I aim todo my bit to enhance and maintain the park. Wehave a garden club with several flower beds of ourown which we plant and maintain and a new nectarborder for bees and butterflies.

We also do regular litter picks. I don’t enjoy clearingup behind other folk but would like to see South Parkas a litter free zone and get the message across thatrubbish spoils the park and is also hazardous to thelocal wildlife.

We also raise funds for the group and have purchasedpicnic tables and have commissioned several carvedwood sculptures. It’s great that I can do something Ienjoy and also make a difference to a park I love.”

Is your two year oldchild eligible for freechildcare?

We’re celebrating the fact that moreDarlington children than ever are accessingtheir 15 hours of free childcare a week.

When the scheme began in September 2009, 50two-year olds were accessing free childcare. Over260 two-year olds are now accessing free childcare!

Is my child eligible?Your child is eligible if:

• They are being ‘looked after’ by the Council• They have left care through special guardianship,

an adoption or residence order• They have a statement of Special Educational

Needs or an Education, Health and Care plan• They attract Disability Living Allowance

Or if you receive the following benefitsyour child may be eligible:

• Income Support • Income based Jobseekers Allowance• Income related Employment and Support

Allowance• Support under part VI of the Immigration and

to Working Tax Credit and have an annual incomethat does not exceed £16,190)

Parents are able to choose from a variety ofprivate day nurseries, a maintained nursery, playgroups and childminders across theBorough. There are also plans to create fundedplaces in Darlington schools this Autumn, increasing choice even further.
