The weather can’t seem to make up it’s mind what it wants to do, but let’s hope that we stay fairly dry and warm for the next few months. A little rain in the beginning of July will be okay so that things are not tinder dry for the fourth. Speak- ing of the fourth of July, we always have a second Guard at the Gate for traffic control on the fourth and will continue to do so. We also have had a second roving patrol during the ear- ly darkness hours when fireworks are shot off. It always seems that as they patrol the two parks along the bay, people are on their best behavior, then the patrol leaves and fireworks are shot off in the parking lots and into neighbors gardens. This year we plan on having a stationary guard with citation book in hand at Sand Dollar Park and Sunset Park with one Roving Patrol for the rest of the Vil- lage. Fireworks are not allowed in the Village!!! Below the Mean High Water Mark is County property in most cases and fireworks may be set off there. We have had instances of fireworks veering into the crowds in the parking lots, one year a ladies hair caught fire, people used members fences to store drinks, shot fireworks and held sparklers over dry flower- beds, etc. Let’s try to keep this year safe for everybody. Thanks and en- joy! School is now out and days are long- er, so watch for more pedestrian traf- fic on our roads. The roads belong to everyone, so share them nicely. For parents of skateboarders and for those skateboarders who may read the bulletin, be very careful going down some of our hills. There have already been reports of a number of near misses (or near hits) already. I don’t want to see anymore ambulanc- es enter the Village than what is al- ready necessary. Two other words of caution on this topic, everyone must check in when coming through the gate. That means vehicles, bicycles, skateboarders, and walkers. The other caution is that the speed limit in the Village is twenty (20) MPH. That applies to vehicles, skateboards, bicy- cles, etc. Be cautious and safe, please. The Pool has been open for a short time and with the anticipation of warmer weather, plan on getting your Pool Pass soon, if you have not al- ready done so. For those who have family or grandkids for a short time during the summer, a Weekly Pass is available for $5 for seven consecutive days (you choose the starting date). Pretty good deal for the few times you may have family visit. The Golf Course is off to a good start for the year. shine. Try it out if you are not already an avid golfer. Joe, Al, and Spence have food available at the Pro Shop and you do not need to be a golfer to get some food. Hot dogs, hamburgers, snacks, soda, beer, candy, ice cream, chowder, chili, and maybe more are available for your pleasure. Instead of cooking on a hot August night, why not hop down to the Pro Shop for a nice change of pace. The Office will be closed on the Fourth, so plan any Of-fice needs accordingly. Many events will be taking place in the Village during July. Most of the normal groups and clubs will be meeting. Some of the special events in July include ELVIS at the Clubhouse on Saturday the 14th. Check out the bulletin article for particulars. The Golf Fundraiser Tournament, Dinner, and Auction is scheduled for July 22nd. This years dinner will be a Fish Fry. Check the Bulletin for details. You do not need to participate in the Tournament to purchase tickets to the dinner and everyone is welcome for the auction. Plenty of good prizes await the high bidders. The Art Group has an all day show on Saturday July 28th, plan on at-tending. For a preview of their talents, check out the art work hanging in the Clubhouse. Lovely. My favorite is a long skinny picture of a bird (loon or something). It looks so serene as it perches so gently peering ahead. Permits and plans are being made for the remodel of the Front Gate Entry. It seems that September will be the start date. There will be about a five (5) week period where the normal traffic pattern will be altered some to accommodate the remodel, and I ask everybody to be patient during this time. Every effort will be made to make the transition as seamless as possible, but there has to be room for the work and the traffic to coincide. More information as it becomes available. HAPPY FOURTH AND A WONDERFUL JULY TO ALL. General Manager, Ken Hoffer

FROM YOUR BOARD PRESIDENT

Well the General meeting is over and we have two new board members and one existing member re-elected. There is much work to be done. The contract for the front gate is ready to be signed and construction will start in September, in the meantime the contractor is applying for the necessary permits. We have finally settled on a pre-budget meeting date and it is July 6th in the Clubhouse from 10:00am to 2:00pm – you are welcome - but we will not take any comments from the floor at this meeting. Docks A and B are getting new hinges (must be custom made) and the launch ramp dock will be repaired as soon as the hinges on A and B are installed. You have proba-bly noticed that the docks are beginning to take a new look – our new marina technician and volunteers are busy power washing the gangways and fingers, refas-tening loose boards and making the necessary repairs. I would also thank the volunteers that replaced the leaking water line on B dock. Finally, the slime build up where the leaks were, is gone and the dock is safer to walk on because the old water line, a tripping hazard, on top of the gangway has been moved to the side where it should be. At the urgings of one of our members we have invited two financial advisors to our next work session to inves-tigate other instruments to invest our reserve money in, with higher yields than we are presently getting. The board members and I are fully united in this, and I stated this at the June general meeting, – whatever investment that they will present for our perusal, must be safe (no loss of principal) and insured. You are invited to join us – check the bulletin for the workshop date and time and place in July. Peter Winterfeld Board President

YACHT CLUB

Commodore Cruise Report: We have just returned from a very relaxing five-day cruise to Sucia Island, and Friday and Deer Harbors. This year, we kept the itinerary simple and the distances short. We were joined by twelve boats, one ferry, and one airplane. Highlights included the party barge docktails extravaganza at Friday Harbor where local legend - Popeye the seal - joined us and we witnessed a historic "Rock Star" arrival of one of our members by Leapfrog water taxi! Saturday night's private wine tasting at San Juan Island Winery's "Piano and Wine" tasting room was packed, and the BYO appetizers were to die for. Then we all walked up the street for bowling and dinner at Paradise Lanes. It was very enter-taining, to say the least. Our time at Deer Harbor includ-ed strong, cold winds, bright sunshine and pounding rain; it was a typical NW summer weekend. We made the most of it, taking long walks and just generally relaxing and shooting the breeze. For our “luau” docktails party, we huddled on the main dock in the lee of a nice big boat; all cruisers, ono pupus and killer Mai Tais were able to find shelter. Hawaiian music and our usual spirit of Aloha provided the soft warm and floral breeze. Vice Commodore's Cruise: The Vice Commodore's Cruise is scheduled for July 20-27 with two nights each at Ganges Marina, Genoa Bay Marina, Brentwood Mari-na and Roche Harbor. The theme of this cruise will be "A little Food, a little Wine & some Culture" and, of course boating and lots of fun. Highlights include an "Island Forage Potluck Dinner" after a Saturday Market visit and a Wine Tasting tour at Ganges, opportunities to

Raiser golf tournament, fish fry, and auction events take place July 21st & 22nd. These events are open to all BBV residents and their guests. Golf on one or both tournament days, challenge the fun mini-golf course and other games, feast at the Fish Fry (new this year) and, most important, spend a lot on super auction and raf-fle items! Funds raised support the BBV Junior Golf Program (see below) and pay for golf course enhance-ments and other golf-related expenses not covered by the BBV annual budget. See the enclosed flyer and postings at the Golf Shop, Clubhouse, and else-where for more information. Please help! Auction and raffle items and Hole Sponsor-ships are needed. Ask the businesses that you use if they will support our Junior Golf Program by contributing a gift-certificate, a service or product for auction, raffle, or to sponsor a hole. Official letters of contribution are available. All contributors are acknowledged at the auc-tion and in the BBV Bulletin. Also, think about what you might do, too—some of our best and most creative auc-tion and raffle items come from BBV residents. Contact Bob Simpson (371-2636), Jim Macmillan (371-2933), or Ueli Nussbaum (371-5084) for more details or to volunteer. 2012 BBV Junior Golf Program – The first of two 3-day sessions of the 2012 BBV Junior Golf Program for boys and girls, ages 11 -17 years old is now history (June 25 – 27). So, if your “youth” missed it, get your kids, grandchildren, nieces, nephews and their younger friends ready for the next one—August 20th – 22nd. Joe Holdridge, our “resident” PGA professional (BBV Golf Shop manager/owner of Joe’s Professional Golf Lab) and his son, Spencer, are providing supervised golf in-struction. Golf clubs, balls and tees are provided. Con-tact Joe at the Golf Shop for details (371-2026) and to sign up your junior golfer. Parents and guardians, please purchase a $50 Youth Golf membership at the BBV Of-fice in your eligible youth’s name before the start of the program. (Note: If the $50 cost of a Youth Golf mem-bership is an issue, inform Joe so alternative arrange-ments can be discussed.) Birch Bay US Open winner – On June 16th & 17th, our very own Course Superintendent Steve Brand played superb golf under extremely challenging rainy and windy conditions to win the 2012 Birch Bay US Open.

Page 7 Birch Bay Village Bulletin - July 2012

GOLF NEWS CONT’D

His best round – a net score of 56 – was com-bined with the Sunday score of Steve’s US Open “pro part-ner”, Jim Furyk (74). Although Furyk did not win the US

Open (Webb Simpson won), his Sunday score gave Steve a winning score of 130. Congratulations, Steve! Golf Shop manager contract extended – Showing confidence in the directions set in 2011 by the current BBV Golf Shop Manager and Pro, Joe Holdridge, the BBV Board of Directors recently extended Joe’s contract through 2017. The extended contract is seen as a “win, win” situation by both the Board and Joe—continuity of Golf Shop management, continuing to grow interest in golfing at BBV, and increased opportunities to offer ex-panded services and product lines to the community—all benefits that come with assurances provided by a long-term contract. Keep up the good work, Joe! New Golf Committee members – The Golf Commit-tee welcomes Rob Goodman and Jim Smolik to its membership. Our BBV golf community is very active and all interested individuals are encouraged to partici-pate in any way that they are comfortable to do so. A few individuals cannot do it all for the many, but many hands do make it better for all. Friday Night Couples Golf – Friday Night Couples Golf is now in full swing. Tee-time is 4:30pm each Fri-day, but please arrive at the Golf Shop 30 minutes early. Singles are always welcome, too. It’s a great way to “ease into” the game of golf, have fun in a no-pressure setting, and meet new people. BBV Golf Club update – The draft charter for a BBV Golf Club is nearing completion. The new club will be the “umbrella” organization for all club-sponsored and resident-sponsored golf activities at BBV. The Golf Club will address golf tournament, golf handicap, and golf so-cial activities. The Golf Committee, on the other hand, will address golf budget and golf course “administration”

GOLF NEWS CONT’D

concerns, much as the BBV Yacht Club and the Marina Committee address the boating concerns of the Village. Input will be sought from the current golf clubs (Men’s Golf, Friday Ladies’ Golf, and Friday Night Couples Golf…all of which will continue) and all other interested parties. Contact Jim Macmillan for further information (371-2933) and stay tuned for a public meeting an-nouncement! Golfer Reminders Call the Golf Shop to guarantee a desired starting time (371-2026) Do not trespass on private property to retrieve a golf ball (ask permission) When playing 18 holes, check in at the Golf Shop when making the turn before proceeding to the 10th tee Sand tubes to fill fairway and tee box divots are provided for day-use—please use them; when finished, please re-turn and refill them for others to use. Thank you!

Community Reminders – For your own personal safety and course preservation, please be aware that the golf course may not be used for non-golfing activities such as walking, jogging, bicycling, remote-control vehicle opera-tion, kite flying, “sandbox” play, and so on. Thank you for your cooperation. Golf Committee meetings and positions – The next Golf Committee meeting is on July 12th. The Committee meets the 2nd Thursday of each month at 2:00pm in the Golf Shop. Meetings are open to all – your presence and input is welcome. A non-voting Associate Member posi-tion remains open. If you are interested, please contact the BBV Office (371-7744) or Jim Macmillan (371-2636). See you on the tee at BBV!

ADULT POKER NIGHT Enjoy an evening of Texas Hold'em, or some fun card games - our group does both. Beginners are always wel-come. We are very low key and informal and the coffee pot is always on. We meet at the Clubhouse from 6:00pm to 9:00pm, on the 2nd and 4th Sunday (due to the Golf Fundraiser, we will meet on the 2nd and 3rd Sunday in July). Contact Nancy Hilborn if questions 933-1355

ART GROUP

School’s out so it’s time to get out your art supplies and join us for some fun. On a recent Tuesday members worked on watercolor, beading, children’s book illustra-tions, colored pencil bird drawings, and knitting! Tentative plans are developing for a watercolor workshop on Tuesday, July 24th by Lyn Gray Rackley, recently ar-rived from Florida. Non-members are welcome but we need to reserve a space for you so call Linda if you’d like to attend. The fee will be determined soon. Come work with the Art Group – we meet every Tuesday from 12:30pm to 3:30pm at the Clubhouse. Mutual en-couragement and feedback go with the free coffee and goodies provided. We’re all working on things for the ART SALE on September 8th. We’ll be offering art cards and original watercolors of Birch Bay Village scenes painted by the members and other works. Call Linda Lockie at 371-8256 for information or answers to questions.

F.A.R. GROUP

A new group is started for foster, adoptive or relative caregivers families. We will be meeting at the Clubhouse the first Sunday of each month. July 1st is the next meeting, from 4:00pm to 6:00pm kids are welcome. Cof-fee and refreshments served. Whether this fits your current family or if you are inter-ested in expanding your family, join our support group as we begin to plan topics of discussion and fun events for the summer. Contact Rebecca Caro 815-6647 or [email protected]

WINE CLUB

The Birch Bay Village wine group is having a special event on July 20th with the assistant wine maker K. D. Organ of Chateau Ste. Michelle coming to showcase the wines of the Cold Creek Canyon and Canoe Ridge vine-yards. This is a real honor for us to have Washington’s largest and best known winery coming to our group. It helped that Lane Boyce, a member of our group, worked for Chateau Ste. Michelle. Thanks Lane. We will be tast-ing a cabernet sauvignon from each vineyard as well as a merlot and chardonnay from each. It should be fun to see how the two vineyards compare. Our tasting will be on July 20th at 7:30pm in the Club-house. Please make your reservation by July 10th by call-ing Jim Macmillan at 371-2933 or by email at [email protected]. The cost will be $20 per person and a food item to share with the group. You will need 6 glasses per person for the tasting. And, coming up: August 25th (Saturday) What goes with CRAB?

September 21st Cabernet Franc October 19th Gamay On June 15th we tasted Whatcom County wines. Here are the results. 2008 Dynasty Cellars, DC# Meritage $24.99 2009 Mount Baker Vineyard, Malbec, $23.00 2009 Willow Tree, Cabernet Franc $28.00 2005 Glacial Lake Missoula, Cabernet Sauv. $30.00 2008 Dakota Creek, Merlot $23.95 2007 Masquerade, Cabernet Sauvignon $22.99 It is great to see so many great wines being made in Whatcom County. FRIENDSHIP TEA

Thanks to every one that showed a positive interest in the Home Tour. I was unable to contact the homes of interest for this year, so we are canceling the Home Tour scheduled for August. Sorry--maybe next year! On a more positive note, the "Breast Cancer Walk" is going along with strong interest from the community. "The Walk" is scheduled for September 16th, starting at 2 o'clock around the Village. That gives every one time to get back from church, have a lite lunch and get those walking shoes on! Please put this special day down on your calendar as a must attend! Your friends, family, including children and guys, are all invited to sign up for registration starting August 1st. Registration will be $15.00 for adults, $5.00 for kids under 16 years of age. All proceeds will go to benefit the St. Joe's Hospital Cancer Center. We will have special activities going on in the Clubhouse during and after the "Walk". So plan on an exciting "feel good day". Thanks to all who have shown interest and delight for "The Walk" ! Char Jordan 371-2929

We had 60 people at our June pizza night and we actually had pizza for a change. Several people stayed to play cards which is nice to see. Thanks again to all the help-ers, both setting up and cleaning up. July 16th we plan to have a belated July 4th picnic. We will have hamburgers and hotdogs and all the trim-mings. The meat and buns will be provided but we are requesting a $2.00 per person donation to cover those costs. Along with your donation, please bring a salad or dessert to share. Coffee and juice will be available. Bring other drinks as you wish. Social time will begin at 5:30pm with dinner at 6:00pm. After dinner, there will be game tables set up as usual for those who wish to play. Or you can just sit and visit with friends. No reservations are necessary, children are welcome. If you have questions, please call me at 933-4438. Or you can send an e-mail to [email protected]. Judy Sullivan
