TEMPLE ISRAEL BULLETIN

FROM THE RABBI’S STUDY First things first! My family and I are thrilled to be here! Everyone has been most welcoming, and we thank you for such a warm introduction into the community. I especially want to acknowledge the great work of the transi-tion committee. We’ve appreciated everything they have done. With the exception of my car catching fire at the A’s game, when we were there on Jewish Heritage night, it’s been a very smooth transition. Erin, Sam, and I are looking forward to meeting everyone, as time allows. The Transition Committee is planning many opportunities for us to meet throughout the summer, and I look forward to seeing you at one or maybe more of them. But, if for some reason you’re unable to attend any of these activities, the door to my office is always open, unless I’m meeting with someone, and you’re always welcome. Of course there’s always opportunity to say hello

and introduce yourself on Shabbat after the service, and I look forward to that, also. Let me just put it out there – beginnings are naturally awkward, especially when it comes to rela-tionships. With new relationships nothing is settled. Everything is in flux and everyone is trying to find his or her place. I want to say from the start, with new relationships it’s normal to feel “off bal-ance”. It’s been that way since the beginning of creation. Even when God began creating the world, everything was “tohu va’vohu” – “without form.” Everything was in flux and “off”. Nature it-self was uncomfortable, and was forced to step out of the familiar. God had to find the right place for everything and establish the relationships between light and dark, land and water and the like. But, that’s only one aspect of starting new relationships. New relationships are also exciting and dynamic. They are as wondrous as they are rich in possibility. It’s a rare and wonderful moment in one’s life to be able to start a new relationship with someone and be able to learn from one an-other, share our feelings, our concerns, and our faith with one another; to grow together and come to love one another as we create something joyous and meaningful that will last long after we are gone. I am looking forward to creating such a place and building such relationships with you in the years to come. What an exciting time this is to be part of Temple Israel. L’Shalom, Rabbi Barnett J. PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE “Chazak Chazak v’nitchazeik" These were the last words that Cindy Berk wrote to you in her final article as President. I cannot think of better words to start my first article as your incoming president. Our com-munity has moved from a period of tur-moil to one of stabil-ity under Cindy’s

wonderful leadership. I am grateful for her friend-ship and look forward to benefiting from her wisdom as I assume her mantle. My name is Eric Strimling. I grew up on the East Coast and moved to California in 1978. I went to the University of California at Santa Cruz, leaving from there to go live in Israel with my wife, Lauren, for a year and a half. We moved to Oakland in 1988 and joined Temple Israel, where we had the naming ceremony for our new daughter Adi in 1990. We then moved to San Rafael and changed congrega-tions. In 1995 we moved to Alameda and rejoined Temple Israel. I am a carpenter, working for the County of Alameda. I have learned that to truly join, one must become involved. I joined the Ritual Committee, started a Torah study group, and worked with the Amitim, meeting good people, attending great events, and generally becoming integrated into the fabric of Temple life. Then, six years ago President Reva Kopel con-vened the Hazon committee, which I joined, to de-velop a vision (hazon in Hebrew) of what our Tem-ple could be. As a result, our Ritual Committee cre-ated the rotating service schedule that we currently use, and our board added the Director of Congrega-tional Learning position that Mindy Myers has filled so wonderfully. In the course of these changes I became a Board

member. Change is hard and we had some difficult times. Our Board was badly divided, our finances were in deep trouble, and we didn’t even have reli-able office help. Together we worked through it by always keeping an eye on the future and trusting that whatever the disagreement, we all wanted what was best for the Temple. Two years ago we started a Rabbi Search commit-tee. Using the Hazon material, the wisdom of long-time members, and the fresh energy of new mem-bers, we wrote criteria for our new Rabbi. The quantity and quality of candidates who applied was astounding. We are a very attractive congregation! Candidates cited our progressive dues policy, our experiential learning curriculum, and our desire to change, to grow, and to become something greater. After a long process, we were thrilled to announce that we had chosen Rabbi Barney Brickner, and he had chosen us. This mutual relationship is the cul-mination of many years of hard work by a tremen-dous number of our members. Baruch atah Adonai eloheinu ruach ha'olam she-cheyanu v'kiy'manu v'higyanu lazman hazeh. Blessed are You, Adonai our God, spirit of the Uni-verse, who has granted us life, sustained us and enabled us to reach this time. This is an amazing time. Our books are in order, our Board is united, and we have a new Rabbi full of new ideas and energy to make them happen. I am blessed, and honored, to be able to serve as your president at this moment in Temple Israel’s history.

EDUCATION NEWS Dear Temple Israel Com-munity: The brain consists of 100 billion neurons that trans-mit messages. The larg-est area of the brain is called the cerebrum and it helps retain information. As the brain receives in-formation, the cerebrum will analyze and interpret this information so that

appropriate action can be taken. The more you use the brain the better it gets at remembering informa-tion and storing it. I am writing about the brain, memory and retention as a means to emphasize the importance of Hebrew review over the summer. I am going into my sixth year of working at the Temple Israel Religious School, and what I’ve noticed is that many students return to school with “Hebrew Fog.” It takes them a month or more to get back on the Hebrew horse and ride again. How do we avoid Hebrew Fog? Practice and repeti-tion! Before the end of the religious school year, students in grades 4 – 6 worked on creating a flash card series. They each took a small manila enve-lope home with them with a check chart for parents to sign if the student practiced. Children who bring back their envelope in September with 6 or more checks get invited to a pizza party! (A little incen-tive!) The children made the flash cards themselves with a Hebrew letter and vowel on one side, and the pho-netic sound on the reverse side. This way, if a par-ent doesn’t read or know Hebrew, he/she can still practice with their child. We also believe that having the children construct the cards themselves is an-other way to have content solidify. Additionally, students in grades 5 and 6 created word cards with simple Hebrew words and the pho-netic transliteration and meaning on the backs of cards. Here again, parents can practice with the

children. It would help additionally if, during the course of the day, parents can insert some Hebrew words into conversation. Here again, hearing the words repeated is what will solidify learning and re-tention. Going to services over the summer is a great way to retain the Hebrew prayers. Parents can follow the Hebrew with their finger in the prayer book so prayers are not merely memorized, but read. Going to services over the summer is also a great way to get to know the new rabbi. Additionally there are several Amitim b’nai and b’not mitzvah over the summer. Students will get to see what they, too, will be doing in a few years. How often should students practice? Optimally, 2 – 3 times a week for 20 minutes at a time. Even if your child can only practice once a week, that would help. If your child gives you a hard time about it, re-mind them of the pizza party! Lastly, if you feel your child could use some Hebrew tutoring over the summer, several of our teenagers are available for hire as Hebrew tutors at only $10/session. You can call me and I can make that connection for you. The phrase "use it or lose it" can be aptly used to keep the brain vibrant and alert. On behalf of the Transition Committee, as we bid Rabbi Bennett farewell and wish him all the best in his next chapter (which sounds more fantastic each time we hear about it), we would like to cordially WELCOME Rabbi Brickner, his wife Erin and their son, Sam, to our Temple Israel family. While we recognize that transition is a process and often diffi-cult, Rabbi Brickner's energy and excitement are infectious (to say the least). He has spoken with many Temple members over the past several months and has learned a few things about us and has prepared for his arrival with some perspective about where we are as a synagogue. GOOD NEWS.... That means he also has ideas and a vision of where we can go from here, and the sky is the limit.

Transition is a wonderful time to look again at our-selves in the mirror, understand what works the best for us, and open our hearts and minds to new ideas, new perspectives and a new journey. We are lucky to have a very passionate rabbi to help lead us to our next chapter. The good news doesn't stop there. There are also other people to help take us to our next phase in our Temple Israel leg-acy... YOU!

As we embark on the beginning of Rabbi Brickner's tenure, we have some fun things planned.

The First 100 Days

Rabbi Brickner and the Transition Committee have set a goal for every member to have opportunities to meet Rabbi Brickner and each other in informal settings at home-hosted "Meet & Greets". We hope you will take this opportunity to share with Rabbi Brickner what YOU want from Temple Israel and what will help create a more meaningful place for you. We also hope that you will just chat and have fun getting to know one another. Business talk is not required, but feel free to do so should you de-sire to share your ideas!

Also, in the first year, you will see that we are plan-ning some "Meet the Brickners" activities, which are

designed to be casual interactions with Rabbi Brick-ner and his family. We thought we would show them around the Bay Area with some casual out-ings, while having some fun excursions for you, our members. We hope that you will see some that will be of interest to you and that you come along for the fun! While nothing is set in stone yet, we are still discussing the possibilities of trips, such as: A trip to SF to Coit Tower, to the SF Zoo, to the Ferry Building Farmer's Market and lunch. We are dis-cussing the Contemporary Jewish Art Museum, and trying to find a way to put together an "historic" Jewish trip around San Francisco and/or the East Bay. We may want go to Pier 39, Alcatraz, ride a cable car or drive Lombard Street. We might even stay close to home and have a special Color Me Mine event with Mike Berkowitz and have wine and chocolate (thanks for the great idea, Rosa) or havdalah on the beach. WELCOME TO OUR NEW RABBI, BARNEY BRICKNER!


The Temple Israel Dinner Cooks are proud to have been preparing dinner once a month for the residents of the Midway Shelter for the past several years. Many religious and community organizations in Alameda take part in this activity so that the women and children who are putting their lives back together at the Shelter get a nourishing, healthy dinner each day.

Please note that there are several ways you can help with this mitzvah if you’d like to participate. We need shoppers, cooks, and someone to deliver the meal to the Shelter. The meal always in-cludes protein, one or more vegetables and/or fruits, a starch, and juice or milk. In June, Bev Blatt, Nancy Freed, Mary Gold, Alison Harris, Rob Kaplan, and Doug Korach shopped for, pre-pared, and delivered sausage and fruit kabobs, cheesy grits, cole slaw, cookies, and juice to the Shelter. We cooked at Alison’s house because the Cooking Around the World camp was using the Temple kitchen, and were able to use the Harris’ grill. We cook on the third Wednesday of each month. Our next cooking session will be on July 18. Four or five volunteers are needed, and if you’d like to help, please contact Alison Harris at 521-3375 or [email protected].

THE MIDWAY SHELTER COOKING PROJECT

SAM SATIN TO BECOME A BAR MITZVAH ON JULY 6-7

Samuel is a soon-to-be 8th grade student at Lincoln Middle School. Sam, a proud Canadian, was born in Fredericton, New Brunswick. True to his Canadian heritage, Sam loves winter sports, and is a skilled skier and hockey player. In addition, Sam runs on the LMS track team, and has just started competitive radio-controlled car racing (coming in 6th at his very first race!).

Sam’s involvement with the Alameda Jewish community began when he started attending Camp Tzofim in Oakland. Since that time, Sam has spent his summers traversing North America, going to camp in Mary-land, and hanging out in Montreal and the Canadian Maritimes. He’s been working hard at learning Hebrew, and is finding that learning new languages, while not easy, is very rewarding!

In his spare time, Sam likes to build Lego models, draw, garden, and cook...and he tries to never miss an episode of Glee! For his Bar Mitzvah project, Sam is volun-teering as a Reading Pal at the Bay Farm Public Library.


L’TAKEN SOCIAL JUSTICE SEMINAR

The Bernard and Audre Rapoport L’Taken Social Justice Seminar is an intensive four-day program in Washington, D.C. sponsored by the Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism. Over the weekend, stu-dents are exposed to a variety of public policy issues and explore the Jewish values that inform the Re-form Movement’s advocacy around these topics. Every year more than 100 congregations from across the country bring high school students to participate in this powerful event. Each L’Taken seminar covers these issue areas in interactive formats. The programs also include an opportunity to tour the U.S. Holo-caust Memorial Museum and participate in havdalah on the National Mall. For more information, visit www.rac.org/ltaken. Dates for these “weekends of public policy and Jewish values” in the coming year are: Nov. 30-Dec. 3, 2012 December 7-10, 2012 January 11-14, 2013 January 25-28, 2013 February 8-11, 2013 March 1-4, 2013.

THANK YOU TO THE RABBI’S OFFICE RENOVATIONS CREW!

I just want to say a Big Thank You to everyone that showed up to help clean up the Rabbi’s Office. We got a lot accomplished and the office really looks great. The paint job and ceiling look very good, and it all came together in one day! The book cases and the credenza are back in, too.

A special thanks to Jerry Wagner for his help in really driving the project from start to finish. Herb Behr-stock became an expert on replacing ceiling tiles. Ed Riback is now an apprentice painter (we found out that this was the first time he painted a room!) Even though he was going to have his hand operated on, Steve Corman helped with packing and moving items and boxes around. Josh Cohen and Mike Riback provided the muscle when necessary to move furniture and boxes of books, including filing cabinets. Walt Jacobs came after his eyes were dilated and was there for our moral support. Wayne Zensius came in and showed his expertise with a paint brush. Also, Ed showed his expertise with a vacuum cleaner – I think he vacuumed the office three times. Noah Berk expertly weeded the patio area. Yours truly was a good sidewalk supervisor ….. and showed some expertise with 409 and a screw driver.

Again, a Very Big Thank You to all of you for your help in getting this project done.

WOMEN’S CHAVUROT POSTPONED Meetings to discuss the forming of a variety of small women’s groups (chavurot) have been post-poned until the fall. A number of women have expressed interest in being a part of small group of like-minded women to share a special interest. These interests range from book clubs to commu-nity service, from Torah study to needlecraft, holiday celebrations to young mothers’ support groups. If there are any special interests that you would like to share with other Temple Israel women, please watch the Bulletin and your email for planning meetings to be scheduled after the High Holy Days.

TEMPLE ISRAEL TO PARTICIPATE IN THE

ALAMEDA FOURTH OF JULY PARADE

Once again Temple Israel will be a part of the Alameda Mayor’s Fourth of July parade. Plan to join us in your Temple Israel t-shirt and walk, ride your bike or scooter, or skate (you can decorate your bikes and scooters if you want to!) through the city of Alameda. We meet on Lincoln Ave. around 9:00 AM. For more information, contact Skip Soskin at [email protected]. We hope to see many of you as we show the community how strong Temple Israel can be!


ONEG SHABBAT SIGNUP This is the current oneg Shabbat calendar for the rest of the year. Please sign up to host an oneg Shabbat on one or more dates. You may co-host with another family if you desire. Re-member, if we have no hosts on a particular Shabbat, the Oneg Shabbat Committee will provide grape juice and challah that evening. If you have any questions, or to sign up to host, please contact Alison Harris at [email protected], or 521-3375.

ONEG SHABBAT UPDATE

There has been some confusion around “having to be present” to do the set-up and clean-up when hosting an oneg Shabbat. While most of our oneg Shabbat sponsors live near enough to the Temple to be present at the service they’re sponsoring, a few of us live out-of-town but have maintained Temple membership and want to sponsor an oneg. Those people are not expected to physically be here the night of their oneg! If you live out-of-town, just point that out when you sign up for your date(s) so that the Oneg Shabbat Committee knows that you need to have the work done for you. There are also members who have physical issues and are unable to shop, and/or set the tables, and/or clean up afterwards. If you need help with any of these tasks, notify the Oneg Shabbat Committee and we will provide an “Oneg Buddy” to help you. Thank you for supporting this lovely tradition! The cookbook is just $10.00 and contains many of Temple Israel’s favorite recipes from “Fiddler in the Kitchen” as well as new dishes submitted by our members.
