Coordinator’s Corner Blessings July 2008 The Community Parish Nurse Program Sponsored by The Carle Foundation interesting and can’t wait to see how the responses come out. By now you should have received the 30 day pill minders we sent out. PLEASE call Bev to let her know how many you will need for seniors in your congregations. My continued thanks to all of you who took the time in July to meet with me for your annual meetings. It is always good to see you and I appreciate that you would find an opening in your day for us to catch up. As always I remain in awe of all that you do. MANY of our churches are gearing up for fall walking programs either with: Get My People Going through IPNRC or the Walk to Bethlehem. Both are available through our office, do not hesitate to call if you would like to review the materials. (Continued on page 2) Well by now you should have received several invites to the Pandemic flu session at the health department. PLEASE consider coming. They have received a grant to teach this material to faith based initiatives so it's a great opportunity for each of us. Please contact Bev if you can make it. I am thrilled to let you know that as of this writing the Bloomington class has 12 registered and several more that are calling in!! This is truly an answer to prayer for McLean County to be able to support a class locally. Our prayers and good wishes will be with Jo Samara as she leads this group of men and women on this ministry journey. The “National Nurse” Initiative Recently, the IPNRC endorsed the "Office of the National Nurse" initiative of the National Nursing Network Organization. We received the following information from their President, Teri Mills, RN, MS, ANP, CNE. Thank you for the International Parish Nurse Resource Center's endorsement of the Office of the National Nurse Initiative. It is truly with your support that we have been able to continue this grassroots effort to improve our nation's health. As you may know, our new website has been launched and contains an overview of the revisions made a year ago. We are recommending the existing Chief Nurse Officer of the United States Public Health Services become a full-time position within the Office of the Surgeon General and that this position be titled the "National Nurse." Re-structuring an existing position is a cost-effective way to transition the country to focus on health promotion. A career Public Health Nurse with years of service to our nation will be an advocate for nurses to initiate community based education activities, through the Medical Reserve Corps and other existing networks, to slow the rising epidemics of preventable diseases. This title change to "National Nurse" is necessary to provide the impetus and recognition needed to capture the public's attention and raise awareness of a national push for health promotion efforts. We agree with the ANA and the Quad

Council's statement: "A stronger and more visible Chief Nursing Officer would better highlight the roles of nurses in public health, which could serve as a valuable recruitment tool," but we also believe the national recognition of the CNO's role in prevention is crucial. Enthusiasm for the revised proposal grows; the growing list of endorsements can be viewed on our website. Despite our best efforts to keep everyone informed, we continue to hear reports of inaccurate information being shared, contributing to confusion in the nursing community. So that everyone may base their opinions on facts, we are asking for your help [in getting out information about this initiative]. Nurses are willing to begin promoting the public's health now, led by an Office of the National Nurse. With your continued support, we will begin the important work ahead to keep Americans healthy. For more information, visit the website of the Office of the National Nurse Initiative at www.nationalnurse.org or contact Teri Mills, RN, MS ANP, CNE, President of' the National Nursing Network Organization at [email protected] or call her at 503-320-2385. Portion Plate Program

Portion Plate Program Now Available Episcopal Retirement Homes, Inc. Parish Health Ministry Program is offering a portion control program specifically customized for congregations! The Portion Plate Program is a portion control dietary program that promotes a balanced, nutritional approach to meal planning. Recent scientific studies show that nearly 60% of all Americans are overweight, and that one of the main reasons for this growing epidemic of

obesity is that we simply eat too much food! To help curb this trend for your congregation, visit www.episcopalretirement.com , go to “Our Ministries” and click on “Parish Health Ministry”. Under “Quick Links” you will have access to the Portion Plate Program and how to purchase it. For more information call (513) 271-9610 ext. 4289 or toll free at 1-800-835-5768.

Research Program—Senior Odyssey

A research program with the potential to provide both intellectual stimulation and social engagement for older adults who may not be socially active, is currently recruiting participants for the next cycle scheduled to begin in September. Senior Odyssey, funded by the National Institute on Aging, is a fun and engaging program where participants work with other seniors to solve puzzles and other creative problems. We are examining the effects of these mental activities on cognition. Eligible participants are randomly assigned to one of three groups. Some participants are grouped in teams of seven and meet weekly at Lincoln Square for 1½ hours over a span of 14 weeks. They work with coaches to work on solving a long-term problem and spontaneous problems that require “think on your feet” solutions. Another group of

participants work at home to solve weekly puzzle packets. Some participants may get randomly assigned to the wait-list group and will not be able to participate in the activities until the next season. All participants are paid $50 for cognitive testing at the beginning and then again at the end of the program. To be eligible, participants must be age 60 or over, and involved in less than 15 hours per week of volunteer or other employment. If you think this program would benefit older adults in your congregation, we are available to talk about the program at your church or we can send you informational brochures to distribute. Please contact Jennifer Kapolnek, Recruiting Coordinator, at 244-3945 or email: [email protected]
