Hi to you all in mighty Subaland, I hope all is well in your world.

Well we’re at the end of the club year already. I have been proud and honouredto be your President for this year; and I would like to be again if you’d haveme.

Don’t forget that memberships are due. I think at this time we only 14 membersthat have paid up. So come on, hurry up, don’t be late, you can’t vote if youhaven’t paid up and your magazine will stop.

The club birthday party went well with a good roll up, but it was sad that moremembers did not come as it was not a cold night, and you could have beenamong the first to congratulate Shane and Libby, who had become engaged acouple of days earlier. All the best to you both.

Well there are a lot of good trips coming up. Have a look at “What’s On”because there has been a change around. So if you don’t want to miss out, letthe trip leader know, and have a fun time on the trip.

Well that’s all from me this time. Until next time, if there is one “may the Six StarForce be with you”.

BE COOL AND GO HARD!!

THIS MONTH’S SCOOP FROM THE EDITORTHIS MONTH’S SCOOP FROM THE EDITORTHIS MONTH’S SCOOP FROM THE EDITORTHIS MONTH’S SCOOP FROM THE EDITORTHIS MONTH’S SCOOP FROM THE EDITOR

Greg Bryant SC480

Well here it is – my final magazine as Editor. My, how the last three years haveflown. I must say it has been a great experience; one filled with joy interspersedwith the odd sleepless night (there are deadlines to be met), frustration (damnedcomputers when they play up), and the chance to work with a great bunch ofcontributors without whom the club would not have such a worthwhile magazine.

Remember that Monday night’s meeting is our AGM. That means that it’s timeto vote for our new committee for the upcoming year. So if you want to haveyour say, come along at 8 pm. And don’t forget that you must be financial inorder to be able to cast your vote. It will also be time to present the club’sannual awards to the deserving recipients (and not so deserving ones forsome of the fun awards). The trips that were organised during the past yearhave been listed on Page 4 to assist you in selecting your favourite trip for theyear. And to assist you in knocking David off his perch as Club Man next year, the points scoring system is detailed on Page 15.

I’d like to wish the incumbent Editor (whomever that may be) all the best for thenext 12 months.

That’s all the scoop I have left – I can hear the fat lady singing.

As all members are aware, the Subaru 4WD Club assists in providingvolunteer officials for a number of QRC rallies each year, including the ARCround, Rally Queensland. These rallies are all CAMS affiliated events.

CAMS recognises that Australian motor sport would not exist without itsvolunteer officials. CAMS currently has over 7,500 accredited officials, andestimates that there are over 15,000 officials working at motor sport eventsin various capacities. With the requirement to focus on risk management,CAMS has decided that all officials who assist in the running of rally eventswill require accreditation by June 2005. There are officials who haveperformed certain duties for long periods and re-training can be seen as animposition. There is no substitute for experience, but the goal posts havechanged, particularly in relation to insurance. CAMS needs to show it hastaken all possible steps to put into place sound risk management practices, one of which is to have its officials trained up to the minute.

CAMS have initiated the National Officiating Program so that all volunteerofficials working at CAMS affiliated events will have a level of trainingappropriate for their official position and duties. There are 5 levels ofcompetency, but in general most Subaru Club members only have to beconcerned with 3 of these. They are:• Trainee Licence – for officials with NO previous motor sport officiating

experience working under direct supervision.• Grade 4 Licence – for officials with previous motor sport officiating

experience working under indirect supervision (e.g. control officials, officials stationed at SOS points, road closure officials).

• Grade 3 Licence – required by senior officials who are responsible forGrade 4s and Trainee officials (i.e. Stage Commanders, etc)

Each trainee must complete a Trainee Licence form. Once a trainee officialhas attended for three days at CAMS affiliated events, they may then applyto obtain Grade 4 accreditation. Officials with recognised prior learning(RPL), i.e. previous experience as an official at CAMS affiliated events, mayalso apply to obtain Grade 4 accreditation.

CAMS OFFICIALS ACCREDITATION

Page 9: July 2003

7

To apply for a Trainee License or for a Grade 4 Licence, download the format www.cams.com.au or contact CAMS on (07) 3368 2911 for a form to bemailed or faxed to you, and submit the completed form to CAMS. CAMS willthen return a license to you for use at all events at which you officiate.

To obtain Grade 3 accreditation, an official must attend training modulesand then be assessed for proficiency. Although CAMS encourages officialsto undertake CAMS training modules where possible to further their ownknowledge, people may apply for a Trainee or Grade 4 Official’s Licensewithout ever having to undertake any training modules. Trainees and Grade4 officials only require on-the-job training at each event.

It would be advantageous for all Subaru Club members involved in officiatingat rallies to apply for a Grade 4 License. I am aware of a few members whoare already taking the required steps to obtain a Grade 3 Licence. This willassist the club in running stages when for any reason our key officials (stagecommanders etc) are unable to be there.

Please note that it does not cost any money to become a CAMS accreditedofficial (other than maybe the price of a stamp).

Finally, and this is not a CAMS requirement but rather a police requirement, some club members who assist as volunteer officials at rallies may alsorequire training in traffic control. Generally, rallies are run whenever possibleusing forestry roads. However, wherever part of a stage uses shire or councilroads, it is now a police requirement that a trained traffic controller bestationed at every road block on a shire or council road (including start and/or stop control points). Due to the costs involved, the training necessary tobecome a traffic controller will only be performed if the Brisbane SportingCar Club warrants it.

At the moment there is a lot of debate about the pros and cons of ethanolbeing mixed into our petrol, especially now that the Federal Government hasfinally legislated that only a maximum of 10% ethanol can be blended intopetrol.

Ethanol is a by-product of sugar cane refining, and it can also be producedfrom other grain crops and vegetables such as potatoes. Pure ethanol lookslike vodka and smells like sweet corn. It has a higher octane rating of 115RON and a greater density than petrol, but its energy content is a lot less. This means that burning ethanol is not as efficient as burning straight petrol.Fuel consumption increases by about 3%, and engines require a differentfuel to air ratio and an increased compression ratio. It has also been statedthat metallic components of the engine and fuel lines may corrodeprematurely and that plastics and rubber may degrade prematurely. Coldstarts may also be a problem because of the leaner mixture.

The automotive industry believes that 90/10 (E10) petrol/ethanol blends aresafe for our current engines. BP earlier this year sold 7 million litres of theE10 blend through six Brisbane service stations and claimed to have noreported technical problems from customers. The trial was, however, stoppedearly because of bad media coverage. Caltex is currently performing a similartrial in north Queensland. E10 blends have also been trialled overseas since1980 with no operability or driveability issues. From most reports it appearsthat some fuel line and engine modifications are needed if blends over the10% mark are used.

Some reports claim ethanol burns cleaner than petrol, up to 30% for every10% of ethanol. From CSIRO studies the debate is still out on whether thereis any great improvement in tailpipe hydrocarbon emissions between theE10 blend and straight petrol, although carbon monoxide exhaust emissionsare reduced. Another question mark that arises is whether or not the use ofethanol in fuel is greenhouse friendly; considering the production and use offertilisers, chemicals and fossil fuels that are used in the production of ethanolcompared with the benefit of replacing 10% of the fossil fuel with renewable

The Great Debate - Ethanol In Fuel

Page 11: July 2003

9

The Great Debate - Ethanol In Fuelresource fuel. However there are some positives; it is a renewable resourcefuel, its use would certainly help our struggling sugar cane farmers andassociated industries, and Australia is likely to deplete its current oil reserveswithin the next ten years or so.

The government has set up a taskforce to start an education program aboutthe benefits and dangers of ethanol blends. There will a booklet available atservice stations and information will be placed on the bowsers. Thegovernment has also introduced a range of tax breaks and other incentivesthat will help promote the new fuel. It is not recommended for use in enginesmade before the late 1980’s, in some 2-stroke engines, in power boats, andin motor bikes fitted with non-metallic fuel tanks.

Interestingly, Holden export a small number of Commodores badged asChevrolet Omegas to Brazil where they are designed to run on Brazil’s E22blend which contains 22% ethanol. Many of the fuel system components areupgraded to handle the extra ethanol. Revisions include nickel-plated fuellines, stainless steel fuel line connectors, special materials used in the fuelpump, hoses, seals, o-rings and pressure regulator, and a different type ofpaint used on the fuel filler flap to prevent damage to the paint.

Trip Report - Double Island Point - November 2-3, 2002Anne and I have been Subaru WA club members for many years, so on ourtrip around Oz in our Brumby Ute we called Kathy, who invited us to joinyour club on this trip.

Friday afternoon we headed up a sandy track to Freshwater camp. TheCub trailer makes things harder, and one hill demanded 10 lb tyre pressureon both the ute and the trailer to make it in. Arrived in camp to find 3 shinyOutbacks (David & Carmel Bargen’s, John & Val Schliff’s and John & JennyPetersen’s) including an H6. Camped up, drinks and dinner and then wechatted with the owners who know more than Fuji Heavy Industries aboutthese cars! Others arrived later, some of whom don’t seem to require sleepI’m told.

Sunday morning, bloody crows were up early so I got up and walked downto the lake, a victim of the drought it seems. Took a drive along the beach, passing a whole line of Subis of all kinds, even rusty ones like ours, andDavid Martin’s Super Brumby with limited slip everything! The beach is likea highway at low tide and indeed it is classified a road, patrolled by cops, soroad rules apply. A run up the beach, stopping at the rusty hulk of the CherryVenture right up on the beach which had been washed ashore years ago,and on to scenic Double Island Point.

19 cars, I think, lined up for a photo shoot. There were a few ‘oddballs’ but wewon’t talk about them! A very soft beach exit to a boarded section across toRainbow Beach. I’m told it has traffic lights here in holiday periods! PresidentRik decided to show us all the way, almost! Close, but no cigar Rik. TrainingOfficer Camo gave us an organised de-bogging demo on Rainbow Beach, where the local pub has a pin up board of those who didn’t make it! Ice creamsthen back along the track to camp, much easier without the trailer. A shareddinner revealed some excellent cooks as good as those from our own club;must be something about Subarus and food! Drinks and chatting to membersfrom all walks of life and different places.

Sunday, after a leisurely breakfast, David was keen to give his Super Brumbya good workout so off to Camp Milo on some scenic forest tracks thateventually led down to the beach. Some of the tracks were rutted and sandy.Training Officer Camo gave us another impromptu bogging demo; this timenot so organised! Some digging, pushing and shoving and he was on hisway. Down to the beach where Scott Kerrisk’s red hot turbo had split an airintake hose. A repair was performed with our much travelled gaffer tape andhe was on his way, carefully. Back to camp and Nick George’s MY hadblown a head gasket. No gaffer tape was required this time; just a long towhome. I was happy to take it easy. “Go hard, trailer home” is not an option forus for a long way yet.

People were packing up camp and heading off. We decided to drive the 50km or so to Noosa. This solid sand is something we don’t get in WA. 50kph,5th gear, with a trailer, dream on! Spotted Jason and Greg Sinn trailing us intheir hot MY Wagon, which was very handy as the exit was very soft, asseveral bogged heavyweights could testify.

The Brumby and trailer did no better, with Jason, Greg and Anne shifting halfthe beach while I let down the tyres to 10 lb again before the incoming tideput us on the Rainbow Beach Pub’s hall of fame! This did the trick and thistime we followed the MY tracks straight out to the applause of the lubricatedcheer squad that line the exits for some free entertainment, and the disgustof the still bogged heavyweights on the beach. Slowly up to the Noosa Riverferry and farewelled our helpful assistants and on to camp at Tewantin forthe night.

We’d like to take this opportunity to thank trip leaders Kathy and David forallowing us to spend a great weekend with a great bunch of people. Wehope to see some of them in Perth sometime.

ARC Round 2: Rally Qld - Heats 1 and 2 - This year saw a major revamp of thestages, with the bitumen hill climb being the only unchanged stage. For the first timethis year a new 2km bitumen stage through the Imbil township was included. Teamsdescribed the new stages as very tough, demanding and technical. The Subaru Clubmembers who assisted on the new 21km stage called Araucaria could all could vouchfor that because the stage had everything.

In memory of Possum Bourne, whose car had been allocated the number 1 for theseries, Possum’s start time was kept, so that the actual first car started 2 minutesbehind.

Team Subaru continued their winning way, with Cody Crocker winning both heats andhis teammate Dean Herridge finishing in 3rd place in both heats. Subaru privateerSimon Evans was on the pace, even leading at one point, but had gearbox problems. The gearbox was replaced during service and he recovered well to finish in 2nd place. Inheat 2 he was again fast, but he did not finish due to further gearbox and clutchproblems. For the rest of the season he has been nominated by Subaru to collectpoints towards the manufacturer’s title. In 4th place was Mitsubishi’s Ed Ordynski whowas back on the pace. Good tyre choice in heat 2 enabled him to finish in 2nd place. The new look Toyota Team Corollas had teething problems, with Neal Bates breakinga drive shaft and finishing in 8th place in heat 1. A broken diff put him out of heat 2.Brother Rick had power steering problems that dropped him back to 13th place in heat1. He didn’t start heat 2 because of engine problems. Finnish driver Juha KangasMitsubishi did not finish heat 1 because of a flat rear tyre, which ripped off a brake line.He recovered well in heat 2 to finish in 4th. Getting Set Up – Trent Petersen’s MY 82 sedan has slowly beentransformed from a standard FWD sedan to one which is now fitted with alift kit, 14” rims and a smart Suba Xtreme alloy bull bar. Next on the agendais to fit a 4WD gearbox and rear end, which will finish off the project.Meanwhile, back at the Suba Xtreme factory, Trent is working part time tohelp keep up with the high demand for their products designed for Subarus.

New Look Landmark – During the month of May, the State Governmentdecided that the Cherry Venture shipwreck, which has been a landmark atDouble Island Point for about 30 years, had become a danger to the public. The decision was made because of rust in the ship’s structure, which wasmaking it unstable, and because much of the internals contained dangerousasbestos lagging. A large excavator was brought in to was flatten and removea lot of the loose structure.

Engagements – In the last few months some Club members haveannounced their engagements. They are Sunshine Coast member DougTilley and Shan Whye, who announced their engagement back in February, and Shane Taylor and Libby Lugsden, who told everybody at the Club’sbirthday party.

Nice Note – Doug Tilley has already improved his recently purchased RSTurbo Liberty by replacing the standard exhaust with a 3” system andinstalling a free flow air cleaner. The car now has that distinctive flat 4 beat.
