MARY MAGDALENE Except for the mother of Jesus, few women are more honored in the Bible than Mary Magdalene. Yet she could well be the patron of the slandered, since there has been a persistent legend in the Church that she is the unnamed sinful woman who anointed the feet of Jesus in Luke 7:36-50. Most Scripture scholars today point out that there is no scrip- tural basis for confusing the two women. Mary Magdalene, that is, “of Magdala,” was the one from whom Christ cast out “seven demons” (Luke 8:2)—an indication, at the worst, of ex- treme demonic possession or, possibly, severe illness. Father Wilfrid J. Harrington, O.P., writing in theNew Catholic Commentary, says that “seven demons” “does not mean that Mary had lived an immoral lifea conclusion reached only by means of a mistaken identification with the anonymous woman of Luke 7:36.” Father Edward Mally, S.J., writing in the Jerome Biblical Commentary, agrees that she “is not...the same as the sinner of Luke 7:37, despite the later Western romantic tradition about her.” Mary Magdalene was one of the many “who were assisting them [Jesus and the Twelve] out of their means.” She was one of those who stood by the cross of Jesus with his mother. And, of all the “official” witnesses that might have been chosen for the first awareness of the Resur- rection, she was the one to whom that privilege was given. She is known as the "Apostle to the Apostles."

JULY 22, 2015—FEAST DAY OF ST. MARY MAGDALENE

Except for the mother of Jesus, few women are more honored in the Bible than Mary Magdalene. Yet she could well be the patron of the slandered, since there has been a persistent legend in the Church that she is the unnamed sinful woman who anointed the feet of Jesus in Luke 7:36-50.

Most Scripture scholars today point out that there is no scrip-tural basis for confusing the two women. Mary Magdalene, that is, “of Magdala,” was the one from whom Christ cast out “seven demons” (Luke 8:2)—an indication, at the worst, of ex-treme demonic possession or, possibly, severe illness.

Father Wilfrid J. Harrington, O.P., writing in theNew Catholic Commentary, says that “seven demons” “does not mean that Mary had lived an immoral life—a conclusion reached only by means of a mistaken identification with the anonymous woman of Luke 7:36.” Father Edward Mally, S.J., writing in the Jerome Biblical Commentary, agrees that she “is not...the same as the sinner of Luke 7:37, despite the later Western romantic tradition about her.”

Mary Magdalene was one of the many “who were assisting them [Jesus and the Twelve] out of their means.” She was one of those who stood by the cross of Jesus with his mother. And, of all the “official” witnesses that might have been chosen for the first awareness of the Resur-rection, she was the one to whom that privilege was given. She is known as the "Apostle to the Apostles."

Hearts Contemplating Christ

NEWS FROM POPE FRANCIS AND THE VATICAN

HEART TO HEART pastor to parish

Summer It’s summer. It may be raining on and off, but it’s summer. It’s that time of year when people take off for the hinterlands, to lake houses, cabins, camp, resorts—all those wonderful places—for vacation. Families go, individuals go. Staff goes. We all go. If you are away from the parish, don’t forget that the parish doesn’t go anywhere. Sacred Heart stays up and running. That means we need your financial support throughout the next two months of July and August. Those of you who contribute through electronic giving, that really helps. Those of you who don’t, please remember Sacred Heart parish needs your support even when you are away. And keep Sacred Heart in your prayers and thoughts. You are certainly being prayed for on Sundays throughout the year, even in summer time.

Religious Education Registration This is a reminder to all religious education families to register now for the upcoming year. It helps the office to get those registrations in as early as possible so that class lists can be determined, which in turn, determines how many catechists are needed.

We tend to be a last minute crowd around here (just look at how we gather for Sunday Mass). Last minute, however, creates a bit of chaos for religious education and the school. So please, register now. And thanks for doing so.

Weekday Mass We have not yet made a final decision on the schedule for weekday liturgy. Staff is continuing to reflect on this issue. Until we come to a decision we will continue to offer a Communion Service at 7:00 a.m. and Mass at 8:30 a.m. We are keenly aware that people would like to know how things will shape up. Whatever the result of our staff discussions, I don’t want it to be a hasty decision. As soon as I know, I’ll communicate that to the parish via this bulletin and in an e-blast.

New Library & Security System Now that the religious education offices have moved from the school to the parish office building, the work has begun in order to expand the school library. It’s not yet complete, but you can get a sense of how much bigger the library space will be. The space is squared off, which makes it much more useable. More light comes in from outside because another set of windows has been exposed—now that the DRE office isn’t there. The other side of the existing space (where the administrative staff of religious education used to be) will be utilized for the inclusive education initiative.

Meanwhile, the school is being outfitted with a new security system. The opening bell will ring in these changes to the building. With a new principal and some new teachers coming on board, students will experience changes in leadership and faculty. It’s an exciting time, indeed!

Baptism By Appointment We celebrate Baptisms on Sundays following the 10:30 Mass. Our Baptism Guidelines and Baptism Information Forms are available on our website www.sacredheartwinnetka.com. For further information, please contact Trish O’Toole in our Parish Office at 847-446-0856.

SCRIPTURE REFLECTION GROUP MONDAYS 9AM Join Judy Pyke on Monday mornings at 9am (after the 8:30am Mass) in the Parish Office Fireplace Room to read and delve into the Scriptures for the coming Sunday. The reflection group will meet for 1 hour. “Breaking open the Word” parallels the “Breaking of the Bread” for just as we are nourished by the Bread of Life, so too are we nourished by the Word of God. We break bread, eat, digest and become bread for others. We also break open the Word, digest it, and become the living Word for oth-ers. Join us! All are welcome. NOTE: our group will NOT meet the following weeks - July 20th, August 3rd or August 10th. Regular weekly sessions will resume on Monday, August 17th.

ARE YOU SOMEONE OR DO YOU KNOW SOMEONE WHO…

Has expressed an interest in becoming Catholic?

Was baptized Catholic as a child, but has not celebrated the Sacraments of Confirmation and Eucharist?

We offer an opportunity to come together in a small group to learn more about our faith. Sessions focus on the teachings and experience of the Catholic Church via the Scriptures and prepare individuals to celebrate the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist during the Easter season. This process is commonly known as the RCIA or the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults. You are welcome to participate in the process with your questions, your insights and your faith story in a warm accepting setting. For information please contact Judy Pyke, our Pastoral Associate, at the parish office at 847-446-0856 or via email at [email protected].

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION NEWS We have moved! Our offices have moved from the school to the parish office. Please note our phone number will remain as 847-446-6535 and our new address is 1077 Tower Road. Our email address remains the same [email protected]. We will remain open this year during the summer. If you haven’t registered yet, please do so soon by visiting our website www.sacredheartwinnetka.com and selecting the Religious Ed Registration link on the homepage. Please consider being a catechist. Call the R.E. Office 847-446-6535 to volunteer. If you like children and get along well with them and want to share your faith with them, this ministry might be for you. Classes are Sunday mornings 9:00-10:15. Room parents are needed for each class. Please volunteer on your registration form or call if you've already registered. Our religious education program uses committees comprised of room parents for various activities. For example, the reception after the Christmas pageant, reception after Confirmation, reconciliation reception, etc. Two room parents are needed for each room.

SCHOOL NEWS We are officially on Summer Vacation! During the month of July, the office is closed, but please email Annie, she’ll be checking if you have any questions at [email protected]. The office will reopen in August.

OPERATION BACKPACK Each year, Sacred Heart partners with North Shore Congregation Israel to raise funds to provide students at Jordan Community School in Chicago with much needed school supplies. There are over 600 children at Jor-dan—with almost 600 different sto-ries of family problems and living con-ditions that impact daily life. In some cases, just survival is a triumph. But there is one common thread that links almost all of these 600 stories: Educa-tion is the path that will lead each one to a better life. Operation Backpack helps them on that path. The student body at Jordan is 70% Hispanic and 25% African-American. 96% of the students are low-income families. Operation Backpack is a coa-lition of private citizens and religious institutions that provides essential school supplies to all 600 students at Jordan School. It’s a tangible way to help some wonderful and desperately needy children to start school with the basic tools needed to get the edu-cation that will alter their lives. The generosity of donors also enabled the creation of the ENRICHMENT PROGRAM, providing field trip experi-ences for students who may have never left their own neighborhood. If you’d like to donate to this worthy cause, please make your tax-deductible financial contribution with your check payable to Sacred Heart Church/Jordan Backpack Fund. Thank you!

BULLETIN DEADLINE Please submit your bulletin articles

by Tuesday 9:00AM. Any articles received after the deadline will be placed in next week’s bulletin. Thank You.

Attention Altar Servers We need your help! Sometimes, especially in the summer, servers may have a last-minute conflict that keeps them from serving at their scheduled time. So, when you come to Mass on the weekend, could you make a point of checking to see if there are enough servers? (There should be three). If there aren’t enough servers, please come up to serve, even if you’re not scheduled, and even if Mass has already begun. Your help will be greatly appreciated, and you will be doing a wonderful service for all the people of Sacred Heart Parish. Thank you for helping our parish family worship together!

Parish Office – NEW SUMMER HOURS Please note that effective immedi-ately through August 21, the parish office will be open Monday – Thursday 8:30 am – 4:30 pm. We will no longer be open on Monday and Tuesday evenings until 8:00, nor will we be open on Fridays.

ATTENTION ALL ALTAR SERVERS, EUCHARIS-TIC MINISTERS, GREETERS, AND LECTORS! It's that time again: time to prepare our next quar-ter's Liturgical Ministers' Schedule! The upcom-ing Fall Schedule will run from Monday, September 7th, through Sunday, December 6, 2015. By Tuesday, Au-gust 4, please let Barbara Anderson know any conflicts you have during this scheduling quarter. She can be reached at [email protected] . If you do not have email, please leave a message at the Sacred Heart office: (847) 446-0856. Many thanks!

Actual Sunday Collection: $ 31,821 Budgeted Sunday Collection $ 36,102 Shortfall ($ 4,281)

Thank you to the 341 Sacred Heart families who so generously donated $170,246 to our offertory appeal! This community is incredi-ble and I am amazed at your response to our plea to help eliminate our projected year-end operating deficit of $200,000. We are in the process of closing our books for the fiscal year ended June 30, and can’t yet report where we will end the year, but I can say that, as a community, we achieved something great together! Once again, thank you for your generosity!

Sacred Heart Ladies Bridge News

Our lovely Jean Howlett has been keeping the ladies Sacred Heart bridge teams organized since Mimi McNulty thought organized bridge was a good idea. After 35 years or so, Jean has passed the torch to me; carrying on Mimi’s plan. (Sacred Heart ladies bridge get together). We play in the daytime at each other’s homes. A nice, friendly & fun experience. We welcome bridge ladies to sign up for our 2015-16 Season. We have all levels of players. Used to play bridge, but it’s been awhile? No problem. No partner? No problem. Have a partner? Great. Bridge is clearly great for the mind. Feel free to email, text, call: Sheila Devlin 847-372-8627 H) 847-729-2067, [email protected]

We welcome all to play bridge with us !

LITTLE THINGS ADD UP Youngsters pick up “mustard seeds” of faith from you. Here are their ideas on showing Jesus’ love to others. Walk my neighbor’s dog. Put money in a parking meter that ran out. Don’t talk behind people’s backs. Clean house when Mom and Dad are out. Put out the trash without being asked. Invite your friend to Mass. Don’t yell at your sister. Make dinner for Mom and Dad. Do something you’re good at for someone. Save some allowance and give it to poor people. Bigger kids should help out the little guys. Pray for people who are sick or in trouble. Send “I love you” notes to parents at work. Make breakfast. Parents clean up for you; pick up after them, too. Visit people who don’t have family or are just plain lonely. When friends look sad, give them a hug. Copyright © 2010, World Library Publications. All rights reserved.
