La Salette Reflections

Fr. Rene Butler, M.S

Chosen

(15th Sunday in Ordinary Time: Amos 7:12-15;

Ephesians 1:3-14; Mark 6:7-13)

Today’s reading from Ephesians is used also for

December 8, the Feast of the Immaculate Conception.

Mary was chosen “before the foundation of the world, to

be holy and without blemish before him.” So were we.

The prophet Amos, a nobody, was chosen. “I was a

shepherd and a dresser of sycamores. The Lord took

me from following the flock, and said to me, Go,

prophesy to my people Israel.” The Twelve, chosen by

Jesus in Mark 3, are now sent out on mission.

As we have often seen, Mélanie and Maximin, young

shepherds, were chosen in 1846 for a mission which

they carried out to the best of their ability. In 1855,

exactly nine years after the Apparition, the Bishop of

Grenoble declared, “The mission of the shepherds is

ended, that of the Church is beginning.”

The seed of that new beginning was planted in 1852,

when the previous Bishop founded the Missionaries of

Our Lady of La Salette, a group of diocesan priests,

hand-picked to serve the pilgrims on the Holy Mountain,

and to preach parish missions throughout his diocese.

Six years later, the Missionaries became a religious

congregation, which eventually included laymen also,

La Salette Brothers.

In 1872 a woman from Marseille, Henriette Deluy-

Fabry, founded the Reparation Sisters of Our Lady of

La Salette. They worked with the Missionaries in their

ministry to the pilgrims at the Shrine. In 1930, Fr.

Crozet, Superior General of the Missionaries, founded

the Missionary Sisters of Our Lady of La Salette, to join

in the work of the foreign missions. Much later, in 1997,

the Messenger Sisters of Our Lady of La Salette were

founded in Angola. These three congregations are now

one: the Sisters of Our Lady of La Salette.

Over the years, more and more lay persons have also

been chosen by the Beautiful Lady. Depending on their

country, they are known as La Salette Associates, La

Salette Family, La Salette Fraternity, La Salette Laity,

etc. called to serve the La Salette cause of

reconciliation in a great variety of ways. They have their

own identity, but also work alongside the Missionaries

and the Sisters.

So many La Salette ways to be chosen! What a gift!

La Salette Mission Appeal

July 21st & 22nd

The Missionaries of Our Lady of La

Salette will preach the Annual Parish

Mission Appeal on July 21st & 22nd.

Our mission speaker this year is Fr.

Andrews Kollannor, M.S., the Pastor

of Our Lady of La Salette Parish in

Sulphur, Louisiana.

Fr. Andrews is one of the pioneers of

the La Salette Mission in India. It was

because of his dream, vision and

hard work that the Province of La Salette in India exists

today. He was the First Provincial Superior of the province

and has served in the formation of the seminarians for

many years. He is a good singer and wonderful leader. Fr.

Andrews was born on May 7, 1953 and became a member

of the La Salette Missionaries on May 1, 1983. He was

ordained to the priesthood on December 5, 1985. His Elder

brother Fr. John is a Carmelite priest, serving in India. We

welcome Fr. Andrews to Mary Queen Church.

Having brought the fullness of Life to our world when He

rose from the dead, Jesus sent his disciples to share this

life with all of creation. “They went forth and preached

everywhere” (Mk 16:20).

The Missionaries of Our Lady of La Salette minister to

people of every race, language, culture and way of life—

beginning at the La Salette Shrine in France where our

Blessed Mother appeared in 1846. Her final words, “Well,

my children, you will make this known to all my people,”

echo Jesus’ Gospel mandate.

It is little wonder that the La Salette Congregation has

always been mission orientated. When called upon by the

Vatican to preach the Gospel in foreign lands, they eagerly

responded. This spirit brought them to mission in 27

countries, especially among the poor in Angola, Argentina,

Bolivia, Brazil, Haiti, India, Madagascar, Myanmar, the

Philippines and now the most recent, Tanzania.

With your cooperation, the Missionaries of La Salette can

continue to provide spiritual and financial assistance to

these mission countries as they bring God’s reconciling

message to the poor.

Now and At The Hour of Our Death@

The Ministry of Compassion provides a monthly

discussion, open to all, on a topic related to illness,

dying, death or grieving.

Please join us on Sunday, July 29th, from 1:00 - 2:30

PM in the Parish Center, Rooms 114-115, for a

discussion on “The Hospice Experience” led by Ranay

Danek, RN, BSN, CHPN, with Providence Hospice. After

a short DVD by Barbara Karnes, RN on “New Rules for

End of Life Care,” Ranay (with over 17 years hospice,

end-of-life and Palliative care experience) will provide

helpful and practical knowledge to understand the signs

of approaching death. Learn how end of life care is a

gentle transition and one that provides a sacred memory

for life.AAMEN

God may be selecting you for the special life of priest,

VACATION

This is vacation time for many people. You can always tell

by the number of people who are away during the summer.

Vacations are times when we can relax and reflect and

enter into a new kind of pace that will help us see our lives

in a different way. Jesus says: "Come to me, all you who

are weary and find life burdensome, and I will refresh you."

Vacation time, wherever it is taken, can and should be a

time to be RE-CREATED. We certainly see it as a time to

be renewed physically, how about spiritually? Perhaps we

could make a special effort to welcome those people who

are in our midst as vacationers, visitors or tourists. And, if

you're planning to be away, check with masstimes.org to

locate the nearest Sunday Mass near your vacation spot.

The lazy, hazy days of summer can be a time to

experience the touch of the Lord in a unique kind of way.
