By Dan JensenFiona Fifield doesn’t con-
sider herself an overly spiri-tual person but she recognizes divine intervention when she sees it.
That intervention came in June of 2011 when the head of the MS Society in Leth-bridge and the head of the MS Society in Red Deer met Dr. Freedman, a professor of med-icine in the field of neurology at the University of Ottawa and director of the Multiple Sclerosis Unit at the Ottawa Hospital, on a street corner in Montreal, where he was giving a presentation at the annual conference of the Con-sortium for Multiple Sclerosis Research Centres.
“They had stopped at a red light, waiting to cross the street,” said Fifield in her memoir, Fifield’s Fight, which she took the time to autograph at Books for You in Camrose June 20. “As they waited Anne (Stewart) spoke to Dr. Freedman, mentioning myself to him.
“He told them that I should contact him immedi-ately.”
The invitation proved to be a turning point in Fifield’s long struggle with the Mar-burg’s Variant form of MS.
“The doctor had spo-ken at the conference about his completed bone marrow transplant study,” said Fifield. “He mentioned that while he wasn’t going to be doing any more transplants he would make an exception for some-one with Marburg’s Variant.
Fifield was diagnosed with the remitting relapsing form of MS shortly after the vehicle she was in was struck by a drunk driver in 2005. Four years later, in 2009, doctors determined she had Maburg’s Variant, the only form of MS that is terminal.
“I was in the hospital where I had a fever of 105 degrees fahrenheit,” she said.
Between 2009 and 2014
Fifield suffered MS caused paralysis 11 different times.
“The paralyzations var-ied,” she said. “Some, like the first one, lasted six months; some were three and some were two. It varied a lot. At my worst I was at nine on the expanded disability status scale, on which ten is dead. I would be paralyzed from my collar bone to my toes.”
Fifield was placed on several different medications during the four years, each of which had different results.
“They got me out of my paralysis by using different medications,” she said.
She also underwent countless physiotherapy ses-sions as she had to re-learn to walk 11 times.
On Dec. 29, 2011, in Otta-wa, Fifield became the thirti-eth person to receive a hema-topoietic stem cell transplant for multiple sclerosis and the fourth person outside of the original study trial.
“The transplant was what saved my life,” she said. “I was an empty shell. My entire body had been wiped clean and I was waiting for my new cells to take hold.”
Fifield felt guilty for being given the gift of a sec-ond chance when she real-ized there were so many other people in her life who deserved it, too.
“I was lost between two different worlds,” she said. “When I was dying I did not fit with the normal MS patients. I was so sick that I felt I had a completely different disease. Then, after my transplant and some recovery, I felt the same dissimilarity. This time it was from the other side of the fence. I was getting better and stronger every day. The people who looked at me with pity before now looked at me with envy.”
Fifield, who now lives just outside Trochu, is grateful for her many friends, some of whom are in Camrose, for the
support she received during her struggles with her health.
“When we were in Otta-wa there was oodles of finan-cial support,” she said. “My cousins set up blogs so I could write to my family back here every day.”
Fifield said the overriding lesson she learned from all her years of pain and suffering is that one can never stop trying.
“I know I am a fighter. I still battle today but it doesn’t matter because I know that every day I get stronger. I have learned too to be my own self advocate. If I don’t stand up for myself then no one else will.”
Fiona’s Fight is an inspi-rational memoir that shares her unyielding love and sup-port and the courage it takes to survive a malignant dis-ease.
Fifield book tells ofher fight with MS

June 29Multiple reports have
been received about a suspi-cious person in the county and surrounding counties, claiming to be “Eddie the Rainmaker” stating that he can sell rain. The in-dividual is described as a larger male with a beard
and mustache and speaks with a distinct German ac-cent. He has been seen driv-ing a 90s green GMC truck with a Canadian flag on the top as well as a small grey sedan type vehicle. Should you see or be approached by this individual, please con-tact RCMP.
July 1RCMP received a call from
a concerned resident in Round Hill about young children play-ing on a bobcat that was in a park. A member attended and the matter was resolved.
July 4RCMP assisted Cam-
rose Police Service with a
domestic dispute. Members were able to assist the couple with mediating the situation and coming to an amicable agreement.
RCMP also responded to seven 911 hang-ups, three false alarms, four reports of dangerous/erratic driv-ing, two animal related
collisions and one Mental Health Act.
With the warm weather and summer holiday season upon us, RCMP would like to remind drivers to take caution while driving by obeying posted speed limits and keeping their attention to the road.

From Agri-NewsAn Alberta Agriculture
and Forestry (AF) specialist says the recent dry conditions are having an effect on trees.
“Dry conditions definitely put a lot of pressure on trees,” says Toso Bozic, woodlot ex-tension specialist, AF, Ed-monton. “It’s an invitation for
insect and disease problems, not just for this year, but for upcoming years as well.”
He says there are sev-eral insects to keep an eye out for. “Yellow-headed spruce sawfly has been a problem the last couple of years, as have aphids. The other one is spider mites. This year ash
trees have been especially im-pacted, as well as poplars.”
Monitoring is the key when it comes to insects, says Bozic. “From mid-May until October 1st, landown-ers should check their trees weekly to see what is going on. Monitoring also helps them keep on top of which trees
may need watering under dry conditions, or may need help with other issues.”
If monitoring turns up insect, disease or any other issues contributing to tree weakening, Bozic recom-mends taking pictures to help identify the problem.
“Take photos of both the
problem and the surround-ing area to get the best idea of what is going on. Send-ing a picture is always bet-ter than trying to explain a problem over the phone. And, only use insecticide/fungicide as a last resort to control problems with insects or diseases.”

Gabriel Muglia of Medicine Hat tips his plane to make a few adjustments. The heat forced a few tune-ups.
Bawlf area has the busiest little airport
Andrew, left, and Henry Pel of Beaumont worked on their plane prior to taking the angry bird up on Saturday afternoon.
Howard Fenske of Stettler made his 100th flight in his favourite plane during a weekend of fun flying with others with the same hobby.
Tools of the trade were left behind after the pilot prepared for take-off at the little airport.
Peter Lock of Buck Lake brought his collection of helicopters and airplanes. He adjusts his engine on his helicopter before taking flight.
Blue skies provided the perfect background for Doug Currie of Beaumont and his plane June 27 and 28.

Low water advisory issued for Battle RiverBy Murray Green
A low flow advisory has been issued for the Battle River Watershed because of decreasing water flow levels that are about 30 per cent of normal. The advisory was issued on June 24.
Water withdrawals from new license holders may be limited to ensure senior license holders receive their water needs first. Munici-palities which rely on the Battle River for their water supply as well as some indus-try stakeholders are a few of the senior water license holders. Low flow advisories also mean increased stress to fish, plants and wildlife by decreasing the amount of available water.
“The low water adviso-ries are issued by the Alber-ta government. They affect those who have a licence to take water from the river. That includes any munici-pality (or industry)along the river that draws water,” explained Susanna Bruneau, policy research coordinator at Battle River Watershed Alliance.
“According to the Battle River Management Plan, (low water advisories) affect the junior licences that were applied for after 2005 first.
They would receive notices directly from the Alberta government about limits and how much water they are allowed to extract from the river,” said Bruneau.
Some municipalities may limit watering lawns to reduce the amount of usage.
The river that is nor-mally about five feet deep in areas is around only two feet in depth currently.
“The river still has some flow, which is good. Water restrictions could be placed on some residents if we don’t get a lot of rain,” said Bruneau.
“Producers that extract water for their cattle could be affected. Companies such as ATCO that use water for cooling might have to find alternative measures.”
Drought is a natural and often a cyclical climate phenomenon in the prairies, defined by sustained and extensive below-average water availability. Address-ing challenges around water use, availability and precipi-tation is especially impor-tant in prairie-fed basins like the Battle River and Sounding Creek watersheds where there are no glaciers or mountain waters to feed the rivers.

Options for dry cropconditionsFrom Agri-News
Alberta Agriculture and Forestry (AF) has a link in the Spotlight section on the department’s webpage high-lighting Options for Alberta Producers During Dry Condi-tions.
“Alberta has been expe-riencing dry conditions across the province,” said Rick Dehod, farm financial specialist, AF, Edmonton. “Recent rain showers have been spotty with most farms having differing accumula-tions and different stresses due to the commodity they produce. Regardless, produc-ers are seeking information and insights as to available options, and how to choose a logical course of action, as all of their operations are unique.”
“The purpose of the Options for Alberta Produc-ers During Dry Conditions webpage section is to provide a ‘central location’ for produc-ers to visit for information and tools,” says Dehod. “The information contained there covers a variety of business management and production issues around managing a farm during our current dry conditions.”

Low water advisory issuedContinued from page 9
The water in the Battle River and Sounding Creek basins comes from rain or snow melt that flows into the creeks, rivers, lakes and wet-lands, some of which eventual-ly becomes groundwater. About 35 per cent of the population in the Battle River and Sound-ing Creek watersheds relies on surface water. An additional 35 per cent rely on ground-water as their main water source, which is still largely unmapped and poorly under-stood in Alberta. The remain-ing 30 per cent get their water from regional water lines, mostly from Edmonton (North Saskatchewan River) and Red Deer River.
One of the fundamental challenges in drought adapta-tion and management is that most of the work needs to be done pro-actively, but rarely do stakeholders think about drought except for when they are in the midst of one (when it is too late). As a result, most drought programs and policies are reactive, without changing practices that contribute to the situation.
Currently, most munici-palities in the Battle River and Sounding Creek watersheds do not have drought adapta-tion and management plans. Most programs and policies surrounding drought occur at the provincial and federal level through several different min-istries. The majority of these programs and policies focus on agricultural assistance, with few addressing other economic, societal, and environmental issues associated with drought.
In 2012-13, the Battle River Watershed Alliance (BRWA) developed a series of documents relating to drought adaptation and management in an effort to help stakehold-ers address the challenges that can be faced in times of drought, as well as to main-tain the functions of healthy aquatic, riparian, and wetland ecosystems. As part of the Watershed Management Plan, these strategies focus on how to keep our ecological, societal, and economic systems sustain-able, even through drought. Information on drought adap-tation and management, including Drought Adaptation and Management Implemen-tation Guidelines can be found on the website at www.bat-tleriverwatershed.ca/drought-management.
