JournalSINCE 1992, ENCORP ATLANTIC HAS RECYCLED OVER 3.5 BILLION CONTAINERS IN NEW BRUNSWICK!
2017 being the 25th anniversary of the New Brunswick Beverage Container Program, one must reflect on the success of the past, but most importantly, on what the future holds for our industry. Encorp demonstrated its commitment to the sustainability of the New Brunswick Beverage Container Program and the long-term viability of the redemption centre business model in our 2016-2019 Roadmap. Furthermore, progress has been made recently with reduced sorts, caps-off requirements and a much improved collection system. Research projects conducted by Encorp in the Fredericton and Moncton areas have provided all stakeholders in this province with a wealth of information on consumer patterns and the numerous possibilities open to us with the added use of technology.
Going forward, cooperation amongst stakeholders is critical to the long-term viability of the redemption centre network in this province. As an example, regional service commissions in New Brunswick are constantly on the lookout for greater diversion from landfill, and centres could very well play a key role in providing that extra service. Also, the advent of extended producer responsibility programs such as paint products and e-waste, spells opportunity for operators. Change can be disruptive, but resisting progress, especially one that brings about greater convenience and efficiency, will amount to an eventual dead-end for current centre owners! So for the next 25 years, our industry must be open to progress, change and innovation!
Let’s all work together to make our program even better!
OPEN TO PROGRESS, CHANGE AND INNOVATION!PARTICIPATING CENTRES WANTED
The express service introduced in the spring of 2015 in the Fredericton-Oromocto area will now move to the next phase which will include a recycling bin (made from recycled plastics). Essentially, the bins are designed for a capacity of 60 deposit-bearing containers for a $3 payout. We expect to roll out this new phase in March 2017. Participating consumers will be required to pay $5 (deposit) on the bins. The goal is to make recycling empty deposit-bearing containers significantly faster and more convenient for customers and redemption centres (RC) alike. Customers using this service are asked to count their containers at home, and once at the centre, are given priority and leave quickly with cash in hand.
Participating RCs also benefit from this pilot project. Fixed-count bags/bins are usually collected during peak times but are counted and sorted later during slower periods, making efficient use of staff downtime. So far, customers have been accurate with the fixed-count concept but with the advantage of not having to wait in line!

BOTTOMS-UP!
At this time of the year, we all need to be vigilant and make sure that all customer containers get emptied. Liquid from container create havoc on the redemption centre floors and collection trucks. Make sure that all workspaces remain clean and dry (special attention to centres that receive large amounts of containers from school programs). Slippery floors makes for dangerous working conditions for all. Please remind your customers of the importance of empty containers!

Scheduled to be completed in June 2017, the bag-drop concept (re-centre, Moncton) included a variety of new technologies for possible use in the future by RCs. In summary, the pilot project has proven very popular and convenient for the 2,500 volunteer participants. Overall, Encorp tested over a dozen different initiatives (proof of concepts) of what would be termed a new platform for RCs. The hardware technology used during the project has proven very reliable under our New Brunswick weather conditions. The final report on the project is expected by April.

MARKETS - MATERIAL PRICINGAgain this year, market conditions worldwide are playing havoc on the value of our commodities here in New Brunswick. Overall markets as of December 31st are hurting from global economic uncertainty with price fluctuation for PET and aluminum. Glass also remains a revenue negative commodity.
2017 CALENDARS
Again this year, Encorp is pleased to offer two limited edition calendars. For 2017, we are providing a wall size calendar and a smaller desktop version. The desktop version features a collection of photographs from the Bay of Fundy and Petitcodiac River. Encorp first introduced a calendar in 2011, and since then, we’ve been experimenting with a variety of formats and concepts but always using recycling and New Brunswick scenery as our inspiration. Please ask your driver for copies.
