Another year is coming to a close and things keep moving forward here at JSF.

It’s been a year to remember…..Our crops and grass were above average with a great year of having the right amount of rain at the right ti me and the weather cooperated for harvest. we even snuck some lake ti me in with the family. of course we can never quit talking about the calf prices – what a great ti me to be in the catt le business!

we made our way on the show road for the fi rst ti me in three years. it started off at lloydminster stockade roundup to get back in the groove! agribiti on was next for the 44th consecuti ve year as an exhibitor, as david is sti ll one of the few with that record. our 44th agribiti on was very successful meeti ng new people, reconnecti ng with friends, winning banners and selling bulls.

while we move forward in the speckle park breed, we sti ll maintain an excepti onal group of polled hereford cows. we conti nue to have a top end selecti on of polled hereford yearling and two year old bulls for sale too. we always keep quality and consistency in ALL the bull pens.

in hopes for the catt le markets to stay strong in the years to come, we at jsf are here to ride through the ups and downs with you!

A Commercial Perspective

When the time comes to select your bull for commercial cows, there are a lot of things to consider. Lets start with “breed” as there is a variety from British to Exotic. Th en there is the color within the breed! Now you can start thinking of Speckle Park as well. One characteristic should never change and that is quality and we can fi nd that in all breeds. Each producer has the ability to select what suits him or her best. As long as quality prevails, any combination should give you great results. As a purebred producer we strive for quality and consistency. We like what we have found in Speckle Park. A breed of exceptional quality. A breed that shows shape and muscle pattern on a greater percentage of the calves. As we started into this breed of Speckle Park, we used the bulls on a cross section of commercial cows. Just as we had suspected, they exceeded our expectations. Quality again rises to the forefront. Th e same cows bred Polled Hereford or Angus showed more consistency when bred Speckle Park. Th e cross was exciting and so was the color. Speaking of color well that is a mystery, as there is really no prediction on color. Th at can be exciting as well. In a declining cow market with fewer young enthusiasts wanting in the business, a little surprise at calving keeps you keen. Speckle Park numbers are increasing. Th e demand will always be there for ease of calving and feed conversion. A very popular meat market is being established especially in Australia. A frequent question has been, “Am I going to be discounted on the market by using Speckle Park bulls?” “Not anymore,” is our response. Th ere was a time this might have been the case but as we move forward, we are seeing changes to this idea. Feedlot numbers are increasing with positive results of feed conversion and grading. And don’t forget how good the taste is. We have customers to prove it! A bull is the most important part of your breeding program. You purchase a bull for heifers you keep more than for the calves you sell. Th e selection of quality may cost you an extra buck or two but well worth the dollars spent. So as you consider your selection of a bull this bull sale season, seriously consider a Speckle Park infl uence in your herd.
