The prestigious Fulbright Scholar Program is the

flagship international exchange program of the U.S.,

and provides grants which allow distinguished

academics to spend extended periods of time studying

and teaching at foreign universities.

Silvia traveled to General Pico, Argentina, on January

31 and will return on May 2. In Argentina, Silvia will

conduct research and lecture on improving the

reproductive performance of dairy cows at the National

University of La Pampa. Silva quotes, “It is an honor to

receive this award. I will have an opportunity to work

with some excellent dairy scientists and students in

Argentina. Our interactions should benefit dairy

farmers in Argentina and here in Kentucky.”

Congratulations to Dr. Bill Silvia on his success.

The award is given to scientists who are within five years

of receiving their doctorate and demonstrate great

potential for leadership in their field of study. Nine federal

departments and agencies join together annually to

nominate the most meritorious young scientists and

engineers.

In addition to his work with tall fescue and its endophyte,

McNear and his lab members study the rhizosphere

processes and plant genetic ability to uptake them from

soils. Researchers in McNear’s lab also study how plant

processes can be altered to increase the allocation and

sequestration of carbon in soils. As assistant professor he

also teaches two classes.

Congratulations to Dr. David McNear.

Dr. David McNear, an assistant professor

at the University of Kentucky College of

Agriculture, received the Presidential Early

Career Award for Scientists and Engineers

during a recent ceremony at the White

House with President Barack Obama.

Dr. William Joseph Silvia, professor of

Reproductive Physiology at the UK

College of Agriculture, Department of

Animal and Food Sciences, was named a

Fullbright Scholar.

UK Solar Decathlon team competed in the fourth biennial solar decathlon competition. Teams from 20 universities worldwide gather to compete. Each 800-square-foot or less solar-powered house, was built by the students on their home campus and then transported to the National Mall in Washington D.C. The houses demonstrated that homes powered entirely by the sun do not have to sacrifice all the modern comforts and appealing features that people have become accustomed to in their homes.

The 2009 University of Kentucky Solar Decathlon Team

Since early 2008, UK's team has been hard at work developing its S•KY BLUE House. The "Blues" Team, a group comprised of students, faculty and staff from six colleges and 16 centers and departments within UK, was led by Donald Colliver, professor of biosystems and agricultural engineering at the College of Agriculture; and Gregory Luhan, associate dean for research at the College of Design.

HES Awards of Excellence The first Patricia Brantley Todd Awards of Excellence in Human Environmental Sciences (HES) were announced by the school. The awards are named in honor of UK School of HES alumna Patricia Brantley Todd, known to most as UK First Lady Patsy Todd.

There are three categories; extension, research and teaching. The Extension award was presented to Melissa Goodman, a Family and Consumer Science agent in Hickman County for her heroic efforts on behalf of the citizens of Hickman County during the ice storm of January 2009. Recognized in the Research category was Dr. Elizabeth Easter, a faculty member in the Department of Merchandising, Apparel, and Textiles (MAT). Easter, who has taught at UK for more than 20 years, established the nationally renowned Textile Testing Laboratory in MAT. The Teaching award was awarded to Dr. Tammy Stephenson, a faculty member in the Department of Nutrition and Food

Also at the ceremony the Kentucky Extension Association for Family and Consumer Sciences granted honorary membership to Dr. Lee Todd in recognition of his long-standing support of Family and Consumer Sciences extension and its initiatives to strengthen individuals, families, and communities across the Commonwealth.

UK Alumna Pat Hudson ’80 welcomes Dr. Elizabeth Easter and 24 Merchandising, Apparel, and Textile students to her New York jewelry design company. Hudson shared her experiences in the New York fashion world during the annual UK Study Tour held traditionally during fashion week.

Ag Ambassadors Travel West How do our student leaders celebrate the beginning of 2010? Leadership training in California! A few of our College of Agriculture Student Ambassadors traveled west to attend the National Agriculture Ambassador Conference hosted by University of California-Davis. While in the San Francisco area, the Ambassadors toured several agriculture-related venues including Conn Creek Winery in Napa Valley. Katie Cotterill ’06 Animal Science graduate and Conn Creek Winery Enologist hosted the group during their tour of the facility. This student leadership development opportunity was made possible in part through the Kabler Agriculture Student Ambassador Endowment.

The Kentucky Pork Producers have long been sponsors of the annual College of Agriculture Roundup event held each fall. Grace Gorrell shares, “Mike Ovesen was truly a great friend to the Ag & HES Alumni Association. He was very proud to be a Western Kentucky University alumnus but he had a little blue in his blood too! He was a true team player and wanted all the agriculture commodities in Kentucky to be successful. His smile and laugh and great passion for our agriculture community will truly be missed.”

We thank the Kentucky Pork Producers for their continuous support.

Austin Peay College in Clarksville, Tennessee and completed his Master’s and Doctorate degrees in Animal Science from the University of Kentucky. In October of 1982, he accepted a teaching/research position with the UK Dairy Science program and became the advisor of the UK Dairy Club for many years. In 2005, Jack’s appointment with UK changed to a position of working in youth extension educating 4-Hers about livestock judging.

Jackson’s wife said, “Jack had three loves: working with youth, cattle, and his family. His desire was to be remembered as a ‘farmer’ – a steward of the land with a love of cattle and more specifically, Angus Cattle.”

His dedication to the College of Agriculture was evident and he will be missed by many.

Mr. Mike Ovesen, CEO of the Kentucky Pork Producers from 1987 to 2009, passed away at his home on January 3, 2010. He operated a family farm in Magnolia, Ky., from 1972 until his death. Ovesen also served in the

received degrees from UCLA, University of Kentucky and her PhD in Home Economics at The Ohio State University in 1968. She taught in the Kentucky secondary school system, at Murray State University and the University of Kentucky where she served as Dean of the College of Home Economics from 1972 to 1982. She was instrumental in the development of the College of Home Economics Alumni Association after its formation in 1971. In turn, the alumni created a scholarship in her honor for nontraditional students. “I tried to teach all students, faculty, staff and alumni with impartiality and caring. I treasure the lives I touched and am grateful for those who touched mine.” She is survived by her son; Jim Stewart, daughter-in-law; Dorothy and grandsons; Noah and Perry Stewart.

Dr. Marjorie Smock Stewart, passed away Dec 21, 2009. She was predeceased by her beloved husband of 59 years, William Lester. Dr Stewart was born in Ranger, TX in 1927. She

a heavy load of teaching, advising, and research. One particular area of emphasis for her research was the influence of physical activity levels on vitamin B-6. Dr. Marlatt retired from the faculty in 1985 and was awarded the Sullivan Medallion by UK in that same year. She was best known for her work in civil rights in the ‘60’s. She helped form the Lexington Community Action Council and in 1999, the Kentucky House of Representatives recognized her as a “model of good citizenship” for her work with youth programs. She was a UK Fellow, a member of the Scovell & Erikson Society and established the Abby L. Marlatt Scholarship for nutrition students. She was inducted into the HES Hall of Fame in 2000 and received an honorary doctor of letters degree from UK in 2006.

Davis is a May 2010 graduate of the College of Agriculture. Her degree in Public Service and Leadership has already served her well in her new role. A Barren County native, Emily was an active member of the FFA, serving as a 2006-2007 Kentucky State Officer. Additionally, Davis was a leader in the College as an Ambassador and the President of the Agriculture Student Council during her academic career.

We are fortunate to welcome Emily to the Advancement team. You can reach Emily at [email protected] or 859.257.7211.

Emily London Davis is no stranger to the Office for Advancement or to Ag & HES Alumni. Starting as a student worker in the office in August 2007, Emily comes to the position well trained. Last summer and fall, many of you met and worked with Emily during area alumni meetings and Roundup. Through a student internship program, Emily was responsible for coordinating the area alumni chapter meetings, preparing PawPrints, and organizing a good portion of Roundup.
