When will you let me know about my host family? We will send you information about your host family about a week before you arrive in the UK. We MUST have your arrival details and all your completed forms before we arrange your host family so please do not delay in sending these to us.

JOINING FORMS

Getting your visa How do I apply for my student visa? We will issue you with a CAS to enable you to apply for your visa. If you are applying though an agent, your agent will help you to apply. If you do not have an agent, you should look at the UKBA website for information and advice: http://www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk/visas-immigration/studying/adult-students/apply-outside-uk/ We will also help you by sending a checklist of what you need to do before applying for your visa and we will give you as much advice and help as we can. What you will need to have before you apply for your Tier 4 visa:

A CAS (Certificate of Acceptance for Study) from us

The original school grades or report which is stated on the CAS

Any original IELTS or TOEFL certificate which is listed on the CAS

If you are under 18 a letter from your parents or guarding saying that they give you permission to travel to the UK alone and live in homestay accommodation arranged by the college

Planning your travel to the UK When should I plan to arrive in Scunthorpe? Your host family will be available from the weekend before enrolment begins. Aim to arrive just a couple of days before enrolment starts. This will give you some time to recover from your journey and get to know your host family before college begins. My parents would like to travel with me and see college – is that possible? Yes, we have an open afternoon specially for parents of new international students the day before enrolment begins. Please let us know if your parents would like to attend. We can collect parents up from the airport with you but we will ask them to pay their share of the taxi cost (you do not need to pay for your taxi costs). Your parents will need to book a hotel or guest house in Scunthorpe. We do not ask host families to accommodate parents. There are several hotels nearby but we recommend that you book accommodation before arrival. Finance Have you paid the balance of your fees? You must make sure you have paid all the fees for your first year no later than 2 weeks before you arrive in the UK. (OEA students may pay fees and accommodation termly to college – check with us for details if you think this applies to you). How much money will I need when I am at college? Your weekly expenses when you are at college will be:

£105 for your host family

Approximately £40-£45 per week for other expenses (such as lunches at college, bus fares, personal items)

IMPORTANT Legislation on the controls of cash entering or leaving the European Union came into force on 15

th June 2007. Any

person entering or leaving the European Union will have to declare the cash that they are carrying if this amounts to 10,000 euros or more; THIS IS AROUND £6800. This includes travellers’ cheques, money orders, etc.

Packing What shall I pack in my suitcase? Check with the airline about

Remember that clothes, shoes, toiletries and practically everything else you need can be bought in the UK so you don’t need to pack your whole wardrobe into a suitcase!

ARRIVAL….

When you arrive - Airport transfer Will the taxi be there to meet me? Yes, if you have let us know when you are arriving, we will have booked our reliable taxi firm (Blue Line) to meet you. The taxi driver will be waiting at the airport, near to the Arrivals Information Stand, and will be holding a card saying ‘John Leggott College’. He or she will have your flight details, your name and arrival time, and will know where to take you to your host family. What shall I do if I can’t see the taxi driver immediately? Don’t worry. He or she will be on the way but may be stuck in traffic or may even be in the airport already looking for you. Go to the International Arrivals Information desk and stay there. Phone the international emergency number. We will tell you what to do next. Don’t try to phone the taxi driver. We have a ‘hot line’ to the taxi service and can co-ordinate things for you and get you safely to your host family.

Unfortunately we cannot send a taxi to meet you from the London airports so you will need to make your own arrangements to travel to Scunthorpe. When you arrive - Host family I’m nervous about meeting my host family; what should I expect? Your host family will understand that you may be tired from your journey and that everything is new to you and they will do their best to make you feel relaxed and comfortable. They will help you to get to college on your first morning. When should I pay my host family? You should offer to pay your host family your weekly rent after a few days of being in the house. That is the time to discuss how you will pay (eg. cash or bank transfer) and how often (weekly or fortnightly). Remember some English people are shy about asking for money so may be waiting for you to offer to pay them.

Living with host families During enrolment we give you a lot of information and advice about living in a host family. Here is some basic information;

Most host families will have a few basic rules. It’s a good idea to ask them what the rules of the house are soon after you arrive so that they know you intend to be a good house guest.

Care and conversation - your host family will try to make you feel welcome and include you in their family

A room of your own with a bed, storage, space to work and privacy

Access to bathing washing and toilet facilities, which may be a bathroom shared with the rest of the family

Bed linen and towels will be provided for you

Laundry – your laundry will either be done for you or you will be shown how to use the washing machine and drying facilities

If possible there will be no other speaker of your first language in the home. This is to give you as much English practice as possible

Breakfast and evening meal will be provided every day (unless you are living in a self-catering homestay)

Lunch will not be provided on college days (but you will be able to get a meal from the college canteen)

Every adult over 18 in the host family will have had a police check

The house has been inspected by the college and will have regular review visits

When you arrive - Police registration My visa says I have to register with the police, what shall I do? You don’t actually need to do anything. We have a special arrangement with our local police. They come to college during enrolment to register new international students.

TERM BEGINS….

What should I expect on my first day in college?

Your host family will help you to find college

You will be given an enrolment programme showing you what is happening during the rest of enrolment week and what you need to bring each day

You will be introduced to international staff

You will be asked to do some assessment tests

We will take a copy of your passport and visa

You will be given an enrolment pack and a lot of information

You will have refreshment breaks and you will be able to get lunch at the college canteen

What shall I bring on the first day in college?

Writing equipment (pens, pencils erasers etc.)

A small amount of money for lunch

Your passport and visa What will happen at college in the first week? You will have an international enrolment programme of special talks, sessions and events to help you to get used to the college and the staff. The local police and bank will visit to speak to you and answer your questions. There will be a lot of forms to fill and some tests to do. But there are some fun things planned too. By the time your lessons begin you will know staff, fellow students and be able to find your way around college. How will college be different to my school?

You won’t have PE lessons (unless you are doing PE or choose to do sport for fun)

You will move from classroom to classroom for lessons

There is no cloakroom for coats and things – you will have to use a locker or carry your things around with you. We will explain about this in enrolment.

You’ll have an individual timetable (tailor made just for you!) with the lessons you are studying, plus English, and sessions with your personal tutor, and self-study periods. Therefore you need to think ahead about what subjects you need for your career. You will get a chance, with help and advice, to make your final decisions in your enrolment week.

Lunchtime is one hour. You can buy lunch (hot or cold) from the canteen or you can bring a packed lunch with you.

Life in the UK

The weather is constantly changing in the UK so it is a safe topic of conversation with anyone (eg ‘isn’t it cold/hot today’ or ‘do you think it’s going to rain, snow’, etc). You may be called all sorts of unusual names by people (eg. shop assistants, – they are called ‘endearments’ and are meant to be friendly – here are some you may hear:

Honey/hun Another expression you may hear is ‘ta’ meaning thank you. Tea in the UK does not mean just a cup of tea – it means a meal in the late afternoon or evening – anything from sandwiches and cakes to a 4 course meal! The midday meal may be called lunch or dinner. The evening meal may be called supper, tea or dinner and will be eaten at any time from early to late evening. Sunday dinner – roast meat (beef, chicken, lamb, or pork), served with selection of vegetables, potatoes (may be deliciously roast) Yorkshire puddings and rich gravy.

Getting used to UK currency The currency of the UK is GBP the pound. One pound is split into 100 ‘pence’ also called ‘pennies’.

Five pounds (£5) - will buy you a Macdonald’s burger meal with apple pie dessert

Ten pounds (£10) - will buy you a CD

Twenty pounds (£20) - will buy you cinema tickets for 2 people plus some popcorn

Fifty pounds (£50) - will buy you a good pair of shoes or a winter coat
