“The University of Pittsburgh is committed to providing our students with a comprehensive environment to develop their talents. We are devoted to educating the whole student and determined that every graduate, regardless of degree earned, should leave the University with four key attributes: communications skills, a sense of motivation, a sense of responsibility, and a sense of self.”

Provost James V. Maher

Educating the Whole Student: The Outside the Classroom Curriculum While many of the above-mentioned attributes—identified by Pitt and highly sought after by employers and postgraduate schools—are developed through the depth and breadth of our academic programs, we recognize that boundless opportunities exist for learning outside the classroom. For many years, Pitt has provided a wide array of excellent programs, activities, and experiences designed to educate the whole student and progressively develop skills and experiences that give students an edge over their peers.

We now are taking this commitment to developing important life skills to a new level by providing an intentional, manageable way to navigate the student journey, starting in the fall of 2008 with the unveiling of the Outside the Classroom Curriculum (OCC).

On Wednesday, August 20, two special orientation sessions will be held in the evening to provide students and parents details about this exciting new program.

What is the Outside the Classroom Curriculum? The Outside the Classroom Curriculum (OCC) is a University-wide initiative designed to educate the whole student through completion of a series of programs, activities, and experiences that complement each student’s academic studies.

Derived from the provost’s goals for University of Pittsburgh graduates, the curriculum engages students in the process of growing in nine key areas each year by intentionally and progressively completing various learning experiences outside the classroom. These areas include:

• Leadership Development

• Career Preparation

• Communications Skills

• Healthy Lifestyle

• Understanding Diversity

• Sense of Self

• Community Participation

• Appreciation for the Arts

• Service to Others

OCC Gives Pitt Students an Edge upon GraduationStudents who complete the requirements of the program will receive an OCC “transcript” that documents achievements outside the classroom, as well as a special green cord to wear at graduation. These distinguished students will be able to confidently articulate and demonstrate tangible accomplishments that they achieved during their collegiate career. Students who complete OCC are likely to succeed in the highly competitive job market, gain acceptance into graduate or professional schools, as well as develop other character traits and life skills that are highly desirable.
