Jamhuri High School is a public provincial day school in Nairobi and has the
distinction of being the biggest day school in the republic. The school has a student
population of over a thousand students divided into six streams per form. Further
Jamhuri has a teaching establishment of 58 teachers backed by a non-teaching staff of
30. It was known as the Duke of Gloucester School during the colonial days, and the
government Indian high school before then.
In August 2006, Jamhuri High School was privileged to get recommendation from the
Ministry of Education to join a British Council project; Dreams+ Teams, among other
eight schools in the country.
Dreams + Teams is a programme which aims to develop young peoples leadership
skills through sports. Sport is an ideal vehicle to engage, enrich and empower young
people and build their leadership and citizen skills in an international context.
Therefore the programme links African schools with schools in England. Since its
inception in 2001, Dreams + Teams now operates in more than 30 countries and has
established more tnan100 links. The programme is developed, managed and
sponsored by the British Council and the Youth Sports Trust.
Further, Dreams + Teams also aims at broadening the international view of young
people in the U.K and in Africa and ensure perceptions of young people will no
longer be governed by stereotypes, it also increase knowledge of elements of U.K
culture in Africa and vice versa. Jamhuri High School is linked to Holdenlane High
School and Sports College located in Stoke on Trent, England.
Jamhuri Students in Holdenlane
To realise the aims and objectives of the programme, students are trained in sports
leadership. Under this ambitious endeavour selected students have been trained as
sports leaders to facilitate leadership in sports. Dreams + Teams young leaders train
and organise sports festivals for pupils of primary schools in their neighbourhood. For
instance, in the last two years Jamhuri high school sports leaders have been training
and organising sports festivals for City, Parklands, Hospital Hill and River Bank
primary Schools. Moreover, organisation of Sport festivals enhance confidence and
improve communicating skills of the sport leaders.
Training and Sports festivals for primary Schools
To facilitate cross cultural awareness, broaden the international view and to ensure
perceptions of young people are not governed by stereotypes, students are involved in
exchange programmes. Eight students and three teachers from Holdenlane High
School made their first tour of Jamhuri High School in October 2007, another large
group of fifteen students and five teachers made a second visit in February this year.
Six students and two teachers from Jamhuri visited England in December; 2007.The
exchanges were financed by the British Council and Holdenlane High School.
Jamhuri High School would like to have ten students and five teachers travel to the
United Kingdom in December this year. Unfortunately, due to the global economic
meltdown Holdenlane and the British Council will not be able to sponsor this year’s
exchange.
Jamhuri and Holdenlane students in Lake Nakuru National Park.
Jamhuri High schools catchment area is mainly in the Eastlands area of the city and
parents and guardians can not be able to sponsor their sons for the trip, infact some
bright students form disadvantaged backgrounds have benefited form school fees
assistance donated by Holdenlane students through the programme.
Therefore I would like to appeal to well wishers to assist in purchasing air tickets to
make the dream of some underprivileged Jamhuri students to visit England become a
reality.Donations can be made to Jamhuri High School school fund Cooperative bank
of Kenya,Stima Plaza branch, account no 01129070623402.For more information
contact the project coordinator using this email address [email protected].
Thanks in advance.
