OHANA Waikiki Beachcomber Shines

This week, I had the pleasure of participating in a Hawaiian blessing ceremony marking the conclusion of the $2 million makeover of the OHANA Waikiki Beachcomber—and what a wonderful transformation it is. I have to congratulate everyone who was involved, from start to finish. The hotel’s guest rooms, lobby, and porte cochere have all been updated with an Island contemporary design. Jimmy Buffett’s at the Beachcomber, with its Honolulu Surfing Museum and Margaritaville Retail Shop, has joined the dazzling “Magic of Polynesia” show with John Hirokawa and Macy’s as great on-site entertainment and shopping options. There’s also a brand new fitness room and business center. I told those gathered for the blessing that being back at the OHANA Waikiki Beachcomber evoked many memories of growing up in Waikiki in the 930s and 40s.

Monthly Staff Get Together at the Outrigger on the Lagoon - Fiji

By Una Murray

The Outrigger on the Lagoon - Fiji (FOR) holds monthly celebrations to honor its outstanding employees and to recognize members of the vuvale (family) who have excelled in their area. On Friday, January 30, the first Get Together of 2009 was held in the Conference Centre Reef and Reef 2. Jacob Pau‘u, who was the Master of the Ceremony, invited Kini Sarai to open the gathering with a prayer. General Manager Darren Shaw congratulated the staff, managers, and executives for their outstanding achievements in 2008. He stated that he was also very happy with the guest comments received over the past year and said that if the FOR vuvale continued to give the same level of service, 2009 would be another successful year. As many of you know, January was a very difficult month for Fiji, as it experienced the worst floods in 50 years. Darren took the time to thank all staff for contributing their time and personal funds in assisting coworkers whose homes were damaged in the storm. He also thanked the executives for distributing fresh bread and food to the evacuation centers each morning during the week after the storm. He said that this expression of caring for the community, along with the Bula Spirit, is what makes the Outrigger on the Lagoon – Fiji such a special place. During the event, members of the vuvale whose birthdays were in January, were recognized, and everyone

took part in the celebration by enjoying cake, coffee, and tea. Then the outstanding employees for the month of January were recognized and congratulated.

OHANA Waikiki WestCelebrates the Year of the Ox

By Karen Villarmia

It was a multicultural celebration at the OHANA Waikiki West, as guests and employees greeted the Year of the Ox on Saturday, January 3. Guests and ‘ohana enjoyed a traditional Chinese Lion Dance, which was performed on the sidewalk fronting the hotel. Following the dance, the lobby was packed shoulder-to- shoulder, as guests participated in the food tasting and the giving of Li See to the lion (offering to the lion). Mahalo to Herb Fernandez and the Maintenance staff, along with Sam Yip and Fu Chao Wong, for decorating the exterior of the hotel, and the Housekeepers for contributing their time and talent to create a festive atmosphere. This was the first year for this hugely successful event, and Janice Ng deserves a special mahalo for coordinating it—we can’t wait for next year!

Ka‘ipo Ho, Outrigger’s Manager of Cultural Experiences, performed the Sunday morning Hawaiian blessing and the ceremonial untying of the maile lei on Monday, which he did with sincere honor and respect. For those of us who had the privilege of attending these two special occasions, it was easy to see that Ka‘ipo and the restaurant staff had made a very special connection, with each worker taking the time to thank Ka‘ipo for sharing his mana, his spirit, with every member of the Jimmy Buffett’s at the Beachcomber ‘ohana. Assisting in the Sunday morning blessing were Dan Leonard, President and COO of Margaritaville Management Group; Kerry Houk, General Manager of Jimmy Buffett’s at the Beachcomber; Mel Kaneshige, Executive Vice President of Real Estate and Development for Outrigger Enterprises Group; Barbara Campbell, Outrigger’s Vice President of Retail Development and Leasing; and many of the restaurant’s Managers and Food & Beverage team. TV cameras turned out for the Monday morning ceremony to record David Carey, President & CEO of Outrigger Enterprises Group, me, Dan Leonard, and Kerry Houk in the untying of the maile lei. The Sunday night Sneak Peek VIP party was a grand affair with nearly 500 invited guests attending. It was an evening of great fun, good food, and wonderful entertainment by the likes of Henry Kapono, The Kailua Bay Buddies, Taimane Gardner, and Jake Shimabukuro and showcased exactly what guests can expect when they visit Jimmy Buffett’s at the Beachcomber. A very special moment during the VIP party was when Haumea Ho was called to the stage by local promoter Tom Moffat. Haumea is the widow of the late and legendary Don Ho, who performed at the OHANA Waikiki Beachcomber for the last 4 years of his life. The restaurant now occupies the same space as the former Don Ho showroom, and the music stage sits in the same spot as the old Don Ho stage. When Mrs. Ho came to the stage, Tom Moffat announced that Jimmy Buffett’s at the Beachcomber was dedicating the entertainment stage to the memory of the

legendary performer. Mrs. Ho was overcome with emotion. She thanked the management and staff of the restaurant for the great honor, and then, in true island fashion, she expressed her thanks by performing a hula. Visitors to the restaurant may sense a familiarity when they are greeted and served by the staff. That’s because Ka‘ipo Ho, along with Pila Hanson, Manager of Organizational Development and Internal Communications, played an integral role in their training. In conjunction with the Human Resources and Training staff of Margaritaville Management Group, parent company of Jimmy Buffett’s at the Beachcomber, Ka‘ipo and Pila conducted special training sessions for the new restaurant employees, sharing the

Until 947, I lived with my family about a block away from where the OHANA Waikiki Beachcomber is now located. In those days, trolley buses ran up and down Kalakaua Avenue, with spring-loaded booms reaching skyward to grab electric power from a network of overhead wires. When they came to a junction where other wires branched off, sparks would fly from the end of the boom. That excited a young boy’s heart! The sidewalks on Kalakaua only partially covered the space from a row of shops to the roadway, leaving a strip of dirt that was baked to a fine powder by the tropical sun. I would walk up and down those strips in my bare feet and smile, as the hot powder squeezed up between my toes. On the spot where the OHANA Waikiki Beachcomber would be built years later, there was a store first called Waikiki Drug Company and later, the Waikiki Pharmacy, complete with an old-fashioned soda fountain that made the best strawberry ice cream sodas I have ever tasted. The cost was around 25 cents! About 950, the pharmacy was replaced with a Liberty House store that sold beachwear, muumuu, and tropical fashions to the slowly-increasing numbers of tourists. Some would stay at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel across the street, while those on a budget would stay with our company’s founders, Roy and Estelle Kelley, at the Islander Hotel a block away on Seaside Avenue. I was the young kid behind the Front Desk

checking people in and out, working the plugs of the old-fashioned manual telephone switchboard, or serving breakfast under the kiawe trees with my sisters Jean and Pat. Fast forward to today. All the recent upgrades and improvements have made the OHANA Waikiki Beachcomber a brand new product and a “star” OHANA property, as well as contributing to the tremendous renaissance that is reinvigorating Waikiki and restoring its reputation as the world’s leading island resort destination. People are already taking notice of the OHANA Waikiki Beachcomber. In a just-published hotel review in the travel trade magazine TravelAge West, the headline says it all – “Beachcomber buff-up delivers.” The writer goes on to declare the hotel’s upgrades “right on target” and concludes by saying, “For my money, the hotel’s spiffed-up accommodations and attractive rates poise it on the verge of becoming one of the destination’s hottest off-beach options.” Oh, how true! When Outrigger took the hotel over in 2005, it had been 20 years since its last major renovation. While a number of soft touch-ups had taken place over the years, the property had not received the kind of “TLC” it deserved until Outrigger and our partner Rockpoint Group assumed ownership. Today, the guest rooms at the OHANA Waikiki Beachcomber feature a rejuvenated look with a contemporary

design: neutral hues, sandstone accents, new carpeting, and hardwood furnishings. Each guest room also boasts custom-made bedding for restful sleep and 32-inch flat-screen television. Bathrooms are completely updated with granite countertops, wall-mounted mirrors, and decorative light fixtures. Upgrades to the lobby and port cochere mirror this aesthetic by offering a more spacious and comfortable entry and check-in process. The hotel has always been one of Waikiki’s hidden gems, but with the wonderful changes and great value it now offers, the secret is out! You can’t beat its location in the center of Waikiki—just steps from the beach, directly across from the newly-revamped Royal Hawaiian Center and the Outrigger Waikiki, and adjacent to the International Market Place. It took 8 months, $2 million, the dedicated efforts of our Projects Team, and the highest quality of service and ho‘okipa by the hotel staff to bring the OHANA Waikiki Beachcomber through the full construction and renovation process. Mahalo to everyone who had a hand in this first-class project. Dr. Richard Kelley and long-time return guest Selma Davis

Year of the Ox Begins with a Bang!By Joanna Demeo

The Outrigger Waikiki on the Beach and the Outrigger Reef on the Beach kicked off Chinese New Year last weekend with delicious food, a spectacular lion dance, and a fireworks extravaganza for all to enjoy. The festivities began with a traditional lion dance through the Outrigger Reef lobby by the performance group Siu Lum Pai. Guests and employees got the chance to “feed” the lion, as he danced his way through the hotel, eventually ending up on the beach to surprise sunbathers with a special dance on the sand. The fun continued at the Outrigger Waikiki with Chinese calligraphy and proverbs and a Chinese cooking demonstration and tasting. Ethan Chang and his mother, Suzette, cooked up gon lo mien and crispy gau gee for everyone to enjoy. Guests then made their way out to the street to watch the fireworks and lion dance in front of the hotel. The loud drums and cymbals could be heard down Kalakaua Avenue and attracted a large crowd. The fireworks wowed the spectators, and the lion danced his way through the hotel, as merchants and guests made offerings to him for good luck. Mahalo to all participants and employees who made the event possible. Kung Hee Fat Choy!
