The Glen Shopping Centre hosted a mother and daughter breakfast on 10 May at Galaxy Grill. The Saturday morning started off with a great motivational talk by Debbie De Jager, a founding partner of the John Maxwell team, who spoke about becoming a woman of significance.De Jager didn’t give your normal ‘you should love your mother talk’ rather she posed questions to mothers- “If you ask a child before Christmas were you a good child? Shouldn’t a mother also be asked before Mother’s Day- were you a good enough mother this year?”

She went on to say that what a child becomes in life is a direct reflection of the mother.De Jager gave advice to the mothers and daughters on how to love themselves and to take responsibility of their life from a young age.All guests enjoyed a scrumptious breakfast and were given a goodie bag with delightful gifts that would make any woman feel special- jewellery, perfume and pampering items. There were fabulous lucky draws that had all the women searching under their chairs with several women walking off with massive

smiles on their faces as they collected their prizes.Carla Juta, The Glen Shopping Centre’s Marketing co-ordinator would like to thank all the sponsors for making the blessed morning what it was.The sponsors were as follows: Dis-Chem Pharmacies, Bargain Books, Galaxy Grill, Honey, The Pyramid, Dr Anjana Bhana, Jewe-lee, Sculpt-ya Personal Training, La Salon Liegh and of course The Glen Shopping Centre.

crime is being shown across the world where people can see the tactics of criminals, with the recent viewings of hi-jackings and armed robberies occurring in the south taking the limelight. The cameras are valuable as they record the criminal acts and it helps SAPS with in-vestigations as well as makes community members aware of how the crime happens. However with so many posts of traumatic attacks, I do question whether the viral spread of these attacks is instilling a deeper fear in the community.Yes I know it is reality but if everyday I have the opportunity to view an attack like that (and as humans we are always willing to view them, just like we all slow down to see something when there is an accident.) Won’t the focus shift to the negative and the fear of this happening to us?Take the incident of the mistaken iden-tity on Thursday in Brackendowns (see page1). Due to the awareness that has been brought to the silver Merc, a bystand-er saw a silver vehicle and assumed it was the Merc and managed to get SAPS, CPF patrollers, residents as well as media to the house (which is good as it showed the quick reaction to the call for help) but yet it was just the owner of a house who has a silver Ford. It wasn’t even the same type of vehicle. So now what happens when a person is driving and they see a silver E class Mer-cedes Benz, will they automatically think they are being targeted? What happens if that person owns a gun? – a fearful person with a gun is dangerous and we have a lot of Rambo’s in the community. They might react by shooting at the car yet it just their neighbour or another resident on their way home.I suppose what I am trying to say is- it is good to be aware of things and to make the public aware of the reality of life but when it comes to people being so scared that their quality life deteriorates due to fear. I think it is time to stop watching these videos.Another thing that I found interesting in the articles on the Silver Merc gang in The Star and ANN7 is that there was no comment from SAPS, only comment from residents and a man who was too scared to show his face. Why not ask the SAPS what they are doing about it? It only highlights the prob-lem but doesn’t offer a solution- if there is a real solution. Be safe, be alert but don’t become consumed with these videos, that will steal the happiness out of your life and replace it with fear- if that happens the crim-inals have won already.

What will be your first? This is the ques-tion Vodacom is asking you. Vodacom, as part of its 20th anniversary celebrations, launched its First campaign at The Venue, Melrose Arch on 16 May and explained how they are giving people across South Africa the opportunity to Pitch their First. This is a new initiative aimed at encourag-ing everyone to do something remarkable for the first time. Vodacom, using mobile technology, will then bring the experience to life. Comedian Mpho Popps entertained the crowd sharing his story of his First time... it lasted 1 min 26 seconds and he said he was overwhelmed with so much joy when he made his first phone call on a cell phone. Guests went down memory lane with Voda-com showcasing their classic adverts and now Vodacom want you to make your own memories with your First.“We sometimes forget how much mobile technology has transformed life in South Africa over the last 20 years. We take it for granted that everyone is now always in con-tact, that we can check out email while wait-ing in the supermarket queue, and that we can share thoughts and pictures from an im-portant event in real time. Every day, mobile technology enables us to do new things, and this is the basis of our Firsts campaign. We love that sense of wonder and excitement when you do something new and truly differ-ent and Pitch Your First is our ways to sup-port you in achieving whatever First you’ve got in mind,” said Mosidi Seretlo, Vodacom’s

Executive Head of Brand Communications. People who have a compelling First idea can pitch their ideas at www.firsts.com. A panel of Vodacom judges will then select the best proposals from 10 shortlisted finalists: the shortlist will then be put to an online public vote, with one winner seeing their dream be-come a reality. When asked what if a person says they want to go to Paris for the first time, Motsamai Pule, Vodacom’s Marketing Manager: Brand & Network replied, “What ever youf First is, Vodacom will make it happen.” He added that the budget is R400 000 and the person needs to be 18 years and older and will need to be available between October and Decem-ber so they can experience their first. Entries close in August.Vodacom is also encouraging people to video their own reactions using a smartphone or tablet as they achieve something amazing for the first time. These short videos – capturing the joy, surprise and excitement at the exact moment in someone’s life when they achieve something amazing for the first time – are what Vodacom calls Lifies. To officially launch the campaign, Vodacom screened the world’s first Lifies, which cap-tured the expressions of 53 people as they experience their First. These included a 69-year-old man riding a zip-line, a young boy riding a horse, a couple seeing the first scan of their unborn child and a man con-ducting an orchestra.

The first Southern Africa play conference took place at the Randburg Towers between 12 – 15 May. Non-profit organisations and government representatives from Namibia, Zimbabwe, Mozambique and South Af-rica met to discuss the role of play in early childhood development. Talks by Dr. Lorayne Excell from Wits University’s founda-tion studies division and Professor Jannie Ferreira, former head of optometry at the University of Johannesburg of-fered insight into the long term effects of not creating play opportunities for young children. Both speakers focused on the importance of outdoor play especially in urbanareas where children have little or no safe outdoor areas to play in.The conference resulted in group discussions that identi-fied elements that are to be included in a Southern African regional advocacy plan on play. The framework is being further developed and it is anticipated that an advocacy statement will be to be released on World Play Day on 28 May.The advocacy plan will address the crucial lack of out-door play spaces in urban areas as well as the importance of early learning play based opportunities that have long

term effects particularly in classroom settings.Another pertinent outcome of the conference was the need to include play in the academic curriculum.Conference organiser and Cotlands Chief Operations Of-ficer, Monica Stach, emphasised that play has multiple benefits for children in various age ranges. “Without play based early learning opportunities children have difficulty in grasping concepts. We have found that the value and importance of play is not fully understood by communities and therefore play is not seen as an integral part of the learning process,” said Stach.Funders of the conference, child aid organisation Terre Des Hommes Germany, added that they were very pleased with the outcomes. “We are encouraged by the level of engagement by NGO’s and Southern African government officials. It is imperative that civil society is equipped to take the issues discussed at this conference forward. Play is an essential part of children’s develop-ment and we believe that promoting play will strengthen children’s rights in Southern Africa at large,” said Leonor Quinto Terre Des Hommes Regional Coordinator. It was said that a second play conferences will be held.

SHARING THE RESPONSIBILITY: All role players at the play conference have the responsibility to highlight that play is im-perative.

ADULTS CAN PLAY AS WELL: The Play conference attendees have some play time with each other.

On his way to catch a flight, Mark Sham, ran into a book shop at an airport and grabbed the first book that caught his eye. Little did he know that, that choice will have a major impact on his life. The book he chose was Inside Coca-Cola, the story of Neville Isdell, the former chairman and CEO of The Coca-Cola Company where he worked for 43 years. Isdell took the world’s largest beverage company to new heights during his tenure.Once Sham started to read this book, he couldn’t put it down and in his own words “smashed the book in two days.” He then decided that he will share the information with people and charge them for it. His first Inside Coca-Cola review started in October 2012 and last week Sham held his 16th edition of the review to a fully packed room of attendees. It sounds crazy that Sham started something out of nothing but after you leave Sham’s review you will understand how he succeeded. He is a natural innovator with passion and the utmost determination. He is infectious. In the review Sham explains the story of Isdell and highlights why Isdell was so successful, with it coming down to Isdell constantly doing simple tasks the right way. “When he was working at bottom, he acted like he owned the company and when he was at the top; he acted like he was at the bottom.” Sham also attributed Coca-Cola’s success to Isdell making the business revolve around people, let it be his staff, his clients or the community of the country he was stationed in.What makes Sham’s story even that more stirring is that when he had the vision of the

review, he also had the goal to bring Isdell to South Africa. After a lot of strong-minded perseverance or as some people call it “stalking”. Sham got it right and he hosted Isdell in Cape Town on 20 February this year and interviewed him.Sham was honest with Isdell when he was ‘stalking’ him telling him he wasn’t going to stop until he got what he wanted as “that is what your book taught me.”The young innovator has hopes of bringing Isdell to Johannesburg and with his charm and sharp-mind, it is sure to also become a reality.Be sure to catch tame TIMES’ one on one interview with Mark Sham in next week’s edition where we delve deeper in what make Sham the innovator he is.

ADVERTORIAL

We wish to express our sincere gratitude to all the residents residing in Ward125 who exercised their constitutional right and voted on 7 May 2014.A record of voters turned out at all the voting stations and made it reminiscent of the euphoria of the 1994 elections, which is an indication that people are concerned about who governs our land and for how long.Although some of the stations experienced minor hiccups like zip zap machines running out of ink, ballot paper shortages, ballot boxes shortages, and electricity outages it seems to have run smoothly. Some IEC officials at the stations seemed to be intolerant to party agents and at times appeared agitated. This can be attributed to the fact that they worked very long hours and did not expect the large amount of turnout of voters. An observation that we made is that the officials that were working at the stations during the

day should not be attending to the counting after the stations are closed and that the IEC should appoint new officials to attend to this task. Officials are exhausted and cannot work 24 hours non- stop as the counting process is laborious and time consuming.Although the ruling party has won the elections the Democratic Alliance has shown a tremendous growth at all the Voting stations in Ward 125 increasing its support at traditional voting districts but more so at non-traditional voting districts. At the voting districts of ward 125 situated in Diepkloof Phase 2 and 3 who are regarded as non-traditional for the party where over 7637 people are registered to vote and only 5571 people voted, the DA could during the 2011 only attract 310 votes overall at the VD stations, but during this 2014 election we managed nearly 2000 votes- a growth of over 597% for the party and 35, 9% of the voters tally. This is extremely encouraging.

Peter Stewart, Councillor (PR) Ward 125, writes:

Thank you for voting

If you thought that the heightened po-litical atmosphere would simmer down after the elections then this past week must have been an eye opener, with the DA and AGANG individually out doing their pre-election marriage drama. And in less interesting news – with all his experience from the open letter to Presi-dent Zuma, Patriotic Alliance’s Kenny Kunene is writing a book and that’s all I’m saying about that.Social media attention turned away from the Jay Z, Solange rumpus and right back into the country’s most random politician - Mamphela Ramphele, who announced on Thursday (15 May) that she would be taking a break from politics. A break from politics? Does Ramphele know that her party is less than a year old? How is she already tired? This says a lot about her ability or perhaps readiness to govern. As though that was not enough, the threat of a vote of no confidence in Ramph-ele’s leadership surfaced again following the DA AGANG disaster earlier this year. So not only is this lady (the beckon of hope and growth and all things romantic) tired, but her own disciples are growing weary of the guessing games she has them playing. In Gauteng her constituency has gone as far as blaming her of running the party like a tuck-shop. Thankfully Agang performed miserably in the general election, I mean think about it, if the party is in such a state what would have become of the country if they actually won? It’s really sad and slight-ly entertaining; perhaps there is a reality show here if anyone is interested – being Ramphele. On the topic of sad – a decision by a young lady to better herself through education has caused far too much drama than I would have thought it should. So DA’s former par-liamentary leader takes up an opportunity to further her studies and in the wake of that decision has to suffer a public assassina-tion and disregard of all her efforts. Although the fall out between Helen Zille and Mazibuko has always been something the party denied, statements like “I made Mazibuko” don’t only prove otherwise, but they threaten the structural integrity of the DA’s glass house. This has always been a question I strug-gled with when it comes to party politics, and perhaps someone can provide some clarity in this regard – is there any room for individual thinking within the party frame. The public assassination of Lindiwe is not unique to the DA, we have seen this trend with in the ANC, COPE, and many other po-litical parties where a difference in thinking is automatically followed by the proverbial ‘cold’ Malema spoke about after his expul-sion from the ANC.

I for one will be eagerly waiting to see what transpires after a year when Mazi-buko returns. Let’s have your views, email [email protected] or send me a tweet @NietoVoice.

Security officer dies in shooting on n12

on the morning of 16 May, around 4:00, two members of Hlokomela Security a company contracted by SAnRAL, were patrolling the n12 west near the Comaro off-ramp. They noticed two males standing next to a streetlight on the freeway. The security officers called them in order to search them as it was suspected that they wanted to steal cable. Once closer to the

security officers, one of the suspects pulled a firearm and shot one officer three times. The 23-year-old male security died on the scene. The Alberton SAPS have opened a murder docket and are investigating the incident. No one has been arrested. Sanral's Vusi Mona said, “This highlights the challenges that we come across as Sanral when we are trying to safe-gather our public infrastructure.”

Home owners and estate agents agree that open house or show days help to sell houses because this practice introduces the property to prospective buyers. How-ever, opening your home up to potential buyers may also mean an open house for potential burglars. “Estate agents especially need to be secu-rity conscious and need to discuss the option of putting security systems in place before a show day, not only to protect the sellers’ valu-ables and property but to ensure the agents are safe as well. We advise sellers to lock all their valuables away and to ensure that your agent understands your concerns regarding the safety and the security of your property on show day. Posting a guard on the prem-ises and giving the agent access to a panic button is also a good idea,” Clive Humphrey, Managing Director of ADT Central, said. While you cannot plan for every eventu-ality, the following pointers will definitely help to discourage thieves from taking advantage of the situation.

PRePARInG youR HoMe FoR SHoW DAy:• If someone stands in for your agent on the show day, insist on meeting them and explaining arrangements for your home.• If there is a panic button, ensure that the agent has access to it along with your private security providers’ emergency number.• Alert your private security service provider that your home will be on show and ask them to stop by during the afternoon to check that everything is in order.• Do not leave spare keys for the home (for back, garage or patio doors) hanging on hooks that can be reached.• Always lock away valuables that can easily fit into a handbag or pocket. Remember that drawers and bathroom

cabinets can be opened and rifled through quickly, so remember to check that they do not contain valuable items.• Put away larger items of equipment that are not instrumental in showing off your home to stop criminals thinking they might have to return later when no one is home.• Open curtains and blinds or switch on lights in each room to discourage would-be thieves from untoward activity.

PReCAuTIonS FoR AGenTS oR oWn-eRS WHo SuPeRvISe on SHoW DAy:• If possible, position yourself where you can see prospective buyers’ vehicles as they arrive and make a note of their registration numbers, the make and model of the car.• Don’t be shy to ask your visitors to stay with you while you walk through the home together. This will avoid a situation where one person wanders off unsupervised during the viewing.• While you are conducting a viewing, do not leave the front entrance of the home open. It is important to check that intercoms, buzzers and doorbells are in good working order.• Consider a show day where you encourage “by appointment” viewings. This will avoid overlap between groups of visitors.• If visitors do arrive while you are talking to someone, encourage them to fill in the visitor’s book or take a look at the garden and outdoor facilities to buy some time.

The best precaution is perhaps to consider a second person to assist on show day. This will allow the agent or owner to deal with more than one set of visitors, will avoid seri-ous buyers from feeling scrutinised and will provide more security from a personal safety point of view as well,

The removal of adverse consumer credit information and information relating to paid up judgments, commonly referred to as the “credit amnesty”, came into effect on 1 April 2014.This meant that from 1 April 2014, all registered credit bureaus (listed below) should remove adverse consumer credit information on their systems for a period of two months until the end of May 2014. The adverse consumer credit information that credit bureaus needed to remove from 1 April 2014 includes:• Subjective classifications of consumer behaviour such as: delinquent, default, slow paying, absconded or not contactable;• The adverse classification of enforcement action, i.e. those that are related to enforcement action taken by credit providers including classifications such as: handed over for collection or recovery, legal action or write off; • Details and results of disputes lodged by consumers irrespective of the outcome of such disputes; and• Adverse consumer credit information contained in the payment profile represented by means of any mark, symbol, sign or in any manner or form.

“Paid up judgments, which means civil court judgment debts, including default judgments where the consumer has settled the judgment debt, should also be removed from the credit bureau records from 1 April 2014,” Nomsa Motshegare, CEO of the National Credit Regulator (NCR) said. Where a consumer has paid the judgment debt, the credit provider must notify the credit bureau of this within seven days of receiving the payment. The credit bureau must remove that judgment from the consumer’s credit record within seven days of receiving proof of payment. The consumer no longer has to apply to a court to rescind the judgment so that it can be removed from his/her credit record. “This will save consumers a lot of money that they could have paid to lawyers,” Motshegare added. From 1 April 2014 until the end of May 2014, credit bureaus must not display this information on consumers’ credit records. Motshegare stresses that consumers are,

however, still liable to pay their debts.Motshegare said there has been confusion and misconceptions around the process. “We have also found that some consumers don’t know where and how to get a copy of their credit reports”, she said.

Below, Motshegare shares common misconceptions about removal of adverse consumer credit information and information relating to paid up judgments:• It is a credit amnesty and it will wipe out their debt (they are no longer obligated to pay the debt); NCR response – Consumers must pay their debts.• The payment profile will be removed and they will start on a clean slate; NCR response – The payment profile will remain on the consumer’s credit bureau records.• When the credit bureaus have removed the consumer’s adverse or paid up judgment(s), the consumer’s name will no longer appear at the credit bureaus- NCR response - Consumers must realise that every person who has an account anywhere in South Africa with a credit or service provider, who makes use of credit bureau services, will find the information about the account is recorded with a credit bureau, irrespective of whether the account is paid regularly or not.• After the information is removed, they will automatically get credit- NCR response – That is not so, credit providers are required to conduct an affordability assessment before granting credit.• You pay an extra fee to get the information removed in terms of this process over and above your debt-NCR response – The removal of adverse consumer credit information and information relating to paid up judgments is automatic and free.

In conclusion, Motshegare advised consumers to contact the National Credit Regulator or the Credit Ombud for any clarity or assistance. She further advised consumers to contact the credit bureaus for a copy of their credit reports.

Die resultaat hiervan was twee verdoelde drieë. Die Leeus kon egter nie daarin slaag op enige punte in die tweede helfte aan te teken nie en het die Griquas met die wen laat wegstap.
