This year the Junior Galway Film Fleadh celebrates 20 years of entertaining and educating young people through the power of film. Like our big sister festival, the Galway Film Fleadh, the JGFF is a festival for discovering new talent – if you flip to the middle of this brochure you will find short films from young filmmakers all over Ireland. Films that are funny, poignant and visually captivating. Films that make a farce of, and pay homage to, the directors whose shoes young Irish filmmakers will one day fill. We are glad to present them here, alongside exciting new films from around the world, and professional filmmaking workshops, to educate and help you become even better! See you at the movies! - The Junior Galway Film Fleadh Team

It’s 1950’s France and country girl Rose moves to Paris to take on a secretarial job where it doesn’t take long for her boss, (Romain Duris), to see the potential of Rose’s amazing typing skills. Next stop the national speed typing championships. The glamorous 1950’s costumes and period details make this a charming film that is played with great humour.

Gearrscannáin

Rogha de ghearrscannáin comhaimseartha ina bhfuil an Ghaeilge á úsáid mar theanga bheo bhríomhar, ata an oiriúnach chun téamaí agus mórcheisteanna a bhaineanna le daoine óga a phlé.

TORTHAÍ NA DAOIRSE Stiúrthóir Sinéad O’Brien | 52 nóiméadAr an 19ú Iúil, 1984, dhiúltaigh Mary Manning, bean óg 21 bliain d’aois a bhí ag obair ag an gcúntar íocaíochta i Dunnes Stores ar shráid Anraí, dhá sheadóg Outspan a dhíol. Bhí sí ag leanacht treoir óna ceardchumann a bhí ag tacú leis an bhfeachtas frithchinedheighilte. Cuireadh Mary agus deichniúr oibrí eile a sheas an fód léi ar fionraí láithreach agus as sin, tháinig stailc.

Ní mórán cur amach a bhí ag éinne acu ar chinedheighilt agus shíl siad féin go mbeadh siad in ann filleadh ar an obair laistigh de chúpla lá.

Is beag a bhí a fhios acu go raibh a seasamh le hathrú mór a chur ar an ngluaiseacht dhomhanda in aghaidh na cinedheighilte.

AN CAT Stiúrthóir Helen Flanagan | 13 nóiméadTá fear faoi bhrón ciaptha ag peata cait a bhean chéile nach maireann.

CÉAD GRÁ Stiúrthóir Brian Deane | 11 nóiméadTá cloiste ag dlúthchairde Colm agus Donal gur “maith” leis an gcailín is gleoite ina mbunscoil iad. Ach ní leor seo do Dhonal – tá seisean ag iarraidh fáil amach cé hé an duine is fearr léi.

Is í an aidhm atá ag na ceardlanna seo ná líofacht Ghaeilge na macléinn a neartú trí díospóireachtaí a éascú ar bhealach praicticiúil faoi leith a chuideoidh leo ullmhú don Ardteist 2015.

“As a nation we have pushed a significant number of our young people to the very edges of society and created within them feelings of neglect and apathy. It is now time to empower our young people and give them a sense of belonging” Joe Caslin, Our Nation’s Sons

Cinema has the power to engage us all on both a personal and a public level, to transport us from a closed off, interior space to one of relatability and open discourse, and so the Junior Galway Film Fleadh is proud to bring you the following film presentations, introduced by the filmmakers:

OUR NATION’S SONS Director Robert Hallinan Flood | 3 minsA drawing has the power to go further than words. But the twenty meter long drawing installed in Galway at the Spanish Arch has the potential to resonate and disrupt the visual landscape of the city. It has the power to pull a passer-by from the mundane, the power to trend and the power to gain real social momentum, to showcase the capabilities of our nation’s sons.

I USED TO LIVE HERE Director Frank Berry | 82 minsAmy Keane, a thirteen-year old trying to cope with the death of her mother and the reappearance of her father’s ex-girlfriend, experiences the temptation of suicide after witnessing the outpouring of love for a local suicide victim. I Used to Live Here takes a fictional look at how the idea of suicide can spread in communities, particularly among young people. Featuring performances from a mostly non-professional cast, and filmed on the streets of Tallaght in West Dublin, this film offers a striking dramatic representation of a real-life community on screen. From the director of the award-winning Ballymun Lullaby and researched with the assistance of Headstrong, the National Centre for Youth Mental Health.

These films will be followed by a discussion with the filmmakers and chaired by Jigsaw Galway, which will give our audience a chance to have their say on the issues raised in the films and suggest ways they can help to make a difference.
