gREEtIngS wItH OuR SEaSOnIt seems far too early to be thinking about Christmas – especially as summer has only just decided to make an appearance – but our packed show schedule goes right up until the festive period with two stunning productions by the Russian State Ballet in December to get you in the Christmas spirit!
This season sees the launch of the studio space for our small scale professional touring shows, Spitfire Solo, War Donkey and Monkey Poet, plus our Children’s Drama Classes on Saturday mornings. In conjunction with Jersey playwrights, we present Plays Rough – a great evening of local plays performed by local actors. If you are interested in hiring the studio for a one-off or regular event please contact me on (01534) 511 110.
Comedy as ever is proving a massive hit with islanders. Kevin Bridges sold out in record time in July, Alan Davies has also already sold out for September with Stewart Francis and Rhod Gilbert not far behind. Watch out for Pam Ann next February as last time she was here many were left disappointed when the show sold out.
Our Metropolitan Opera and National Theatre Live Screenings are starting again in September and in August we have an exclusive film preview of The Imposter.
For music fans we have Albert Lee, Anne Nolan and tributes Hats Off to Led Zeppelin and Magic A Kind Of Queen.
In celebration of the Jersey International Air Display we welcome the Glenn Miller Orchestra which is complemented by a photographic exhibition in OH! Cafébar of previous air displays.
We regularly add to our season schedule so please keep up-to-date by checking what’s on our website and social media pages. In fact better still, become a Friend of JOH for just £35 and you will be the first in the know with the added advantage of priority show booking (more details on p42).
Support your theatre this season.

Mark Haddon’s multi-award-winning novel is imaginatively adapted into a stage play by Simon Stephens.
15 year old Christopher stands beside Mrs Shears’ dead dog, Wellington, which has been speared with a garden fork. It is seven minutes after midnight; Christopher is under suspicion. Plays Rough is a regular monthly night in the Jersey Opera House Studio, showcasing brand new theatre writing in the Island.
Short plays are written and rehearsed in the month leading up to each evening and presented in a loose and informal style – often as performed readings. Elaborate sets and costumes don’t feature at Plays Rough!
A smattering of comedy, original poetry and live music from the best of Jersey’s songwriters and poets rounds out each occasion.
For the audience, it’s a chance to see theatre in the making and even be part of the creative process. Opinions and
reactions are invited and the writers welcome feedback. For them, it’s an important forum for new work to be presented to the people who matter the most – you!

Come along and Play Rough. You may just catch something major in the making….

Following several sell-out UK tours and best-selling stand-up DVDs, multi-award winning Welsh wonder Rhod Gilbert is back on the road with a brand new live show.
A regular on Live At The Apollo and with his own BBC One show Ask Rhod Gilbert, he’s one of the world’s hottest comedians.
His stand-up rants on life’s minor irritations are legendary, but this year, he’s a more mellow fellow altogether. He’s now so laid-back he even let someone tattoo a Battenberg on him. Will the new, chilled-out Rhod get his girl and live happily ever after? Or will it be microwaved baked potato for one again? Could it be the Mr Angry of comedy as you’ve never seen him before?

MAGIC, the first and arguably the best tribute to Queen, perform all of Queen’s greatest hits plus some you may not have heard for a while, in their latest show for 2012.
It is refreshing to know that in these days of sound enhancing backing tracks, Magic perform completely live. With five vocals to back up the powerful lead, Roger Brown, Magic recreate all the complex harmonies which were Queen’s trademark recording sound.
This, along with two guitars, bass, drums and the brilliant piano and keyboard skills of Dave Chapman, produce a sound that is second to none. Not attempting to emulate Queen visually, Magic recreate all the excitement of a Queen live show.www.magicakindofqueen.co.uk

Accompanied by a thrilling score, Verdi’s vivid characters grapple with life and love, betrayal and death.
Director David Alden’s dreamlike setting provides a compelling backdrop for this dramatic story of jealousy and vengeance. Marcelo Álvarez stars as the conflicted king; Sondra Radvanovsky is Amelia, the object of his secret passion; and Dmitri Hvorostovsky is her suspicious husband. Kathleen Kim is the page Oscar, and mezzosoprano powerhouses Dolora Zajick and Stephanie Blythe take turns singing the fortuneteller Ulrica. Fabio Luisi conducts.

SLEEPING BEAUTY is the spectacular fairy tale ballet about Princess Aurora who is granted gifts from her fairy godmothers at her christening; including honesty, beauty and generosity. The wicked fairy Carabosse interrupts the ceremony and puts a curse on the young princess; she will prick her finger and die on her sixteenth birthday. One fairy manages to minimise the curse with her gift and instead the princess falls into a deep sleep of one hundred years. Only a magical, true love kiss from a Prince can break the spell and awake our princess…
