Parables Script

Written by Jenny Phillips Its been nearly two thousand years since Jesus Christ walked and taught upon this mortal earth. But His teachings speak to us as much today as they did to the people who sat at his feet. We, too, feel the power and the peace in His words. We know and love the Lord as our Savior and Redeemer, but those who study His words will also come to know Him as a master teacher. He did not teach as the scribes and priests of His day. He used everyday objects such as seeds and lamps. He taught through personal experiences. He spoke in parables. The word parable is of Greek origin and means setting side by side, or a comparison between two or more things.1 The Lord used earthly stories to illustrate heavenly truths. Through His parables, He gently, yet powerfully, points the way to eternal life.

Song: Side by Side (Choir)

If your friend knocked on your door in the middle of the night and asked for help, what would your reaction be? Although you may not be happy about getting out of bed, you would probably help them. In the parable of the importunate friend, a man went to his friend at midnight and said, . . . Friend, lend me three loaves; For a friend of mine in his journey is come to me, and I have nothing to set before him? And he from within shall answer and say, Trouble me not: the door is now shut, and my children are with me in bed; I cannot rise and give thee. I say unto you, Though he will not rise and give him, because he is his friend, yet because of his importunity he will rise and give him as many as he needeth. (Luke 11:5-8) The meaning of this parable is clear. If a selfish man will inconvenience himself to help a friend, how much more will our loving Father help us when we ask. At the conclusion of this parable, the Lord says, Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you. (Luke 11:9) Song: You Are Always There (Female solo)

A certain man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among thieves, which stripped him of his raiment, and wounded him, and departed, leaving him half dead. And by chance there came down a certain priest that way: And when he saw him, he passed by on the other side. And likewise a Levite, when he was at the place, came and looked on him, and passed by on the other side. But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was: and when he saw him, he had compassion on him, And went to him, and bound up his wounds . . . and brought him to an inn, and took care of him. And on the morrow when he departed, he took out two pence, and gave them to the host, and said unto him, Take care of him; and whatsoever thou spendest more, when I come again, I will repay thee. Thomas S. Monson explains, The road signs of life enticingly invite every traveler: this way to fame; this way to affluence; this way to popularity; this way to luxury. May we pause at the crossroads before we continue our journey. May we listen for that still, small voice which ever so gently beckons, Come, follow me. (Speaker holds up a little bag of sand.) If I were to pour this bag of sand onto the street in the middle of a raging thunder storm, how long would it take before it was washed away? Now imagine an enormous rock. What would happen to that rock in a storm? Well, in one of the Lords most famous parables, a wise man built his house upon a rock, and when the storms came, the house did not fall. But a foolish man built his house upon the sand, and when the storms came, the house could not stand.

The question is not who will face the storms of adversity, but who will be left standing when the storms finally cease. As Helaman said, . . . remember, remember that it is upon the rock of our Redeemer, who is Christ, the Son of God, that ye must build your foundation; that when the devil shall send forth his mighty winds, yea, his shafts in the whirlwind, yea, when all his hail and his mighty storm shall beat upon you, it shall have no power over you to drag you down to the gulf of misery and endless woe, because of the rock upon which ye are built, which is a sure foundation, a foundation whereon if men build they cannot fall. (Helaman 5:12) The only way to survive the storms of this world is to trust in the Lord and build our lives on his foundation. He is a stronger foundation than the biggest rock or the most imposing mountain. He is immovable. And there is no surer or safer place to stand than with Him.

Song: Stronger Than the Storm (Female solo)

Anciently, the people of Israel were a pastoral people whose lives depended upon keeping their sheep safe. They loved their sheep, they knew their names, and they gave them tender care.3 In the parable of the Good Shepherd, the Lord likens His followers to sheep, and Himself to their Shepherd: I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep. But he that is an hireling, and not the shepherd, whose own the sheep are not, seeth the wolf coming, and leaveth the sheep, and fleeth: and the wolf catcheth them, and scattereth the sheep. The hireling fleeth, because he is an hireling, and careth not for the sheep. I am the good shepherd, and know my sheep, and am known of mine. As the Father knoweth me, even so know I the Father: and I lay down my life for the sheep. (John 10:11-15) The Good Shepherd knows your name. He will always come searching for you when youre lost. As Alma said, a shepherd hath called after you and is still calling after you . . . (Alma 5:37)

Song: The Voice of the Shepherd (Male & Female solos with Choir) (Speaker can be holding a lantern or lamp.) We have each been given a light to guide ourselves through this mortal world. But we drift away, we procrastinate, we stop seeing things from an eternal perspective, and our light grows dimmer. Speaking of the parable of the ten virgins, Spencer W. Kimball said, Confidence has been dulled and patience worn thin. It is so hard to wait and be prepared always . But we cannot allow ourselves to slumber. The Lord has given us this parable as a special warning. At midnight, the vital cry was made, Behold, the bridegroom cometh; go ye out to meet him. Then all the virgins arose and trimmed their lamps. Even the foolish ones trimmed their lamps, but their oil was used up and they had none to refill the lamps. They hastened to make up for lost time. Now, too late, they were becoming conscious of the tragedy of unpreparedness. They had been taught. They had been warned all their lives.

At midnight! Precisely at the darkest hour, when least expected, the bridegroom came. When the world is full of tribulation and help is needed, but it seems the time must be past and hope is vain, then Christ will come. The midnights of life are the times when heaven comes to offer its joy for man's weariness. But when the cry sounds, there is no time for preparation. The lamps then make patterns of joy on the hillside, and the procession moves on toward the house of banqueting, and those without lamps or oil are left in darkness. 4 Song: Keep My Fire Burning (Female solo)

(Speaker holds up a plant.) Its truly amazing that a plant like this comes from just a tiny seed. But it took more than just a seed for this plant to grow. It took good soil. In the parable of the sower, Jesus tells of a sower sowing seeds. Some seeds fell by the wayside and were trampled or devoured by fowls. Some seeds fell on rocks and sprang up, but they had no root and died. Other seeds fell among thorns that choked the seeds. (Matthew 13:18-23) James E. Faust said, In this parable, the seed is the same but it lands on four different kinds of soil. The Savior also explained the meaning of the parable. The seed that fell by the way side represents those who hear the word of God but do not understand it and fall into the clutches of Satan. The second seed, which fell upon stony places, describes those who joyfully hear the word and thrive as long as all goes well. But when trials come and they feel peer pressure because of their beliefs, they are offended and do not endure. The third seed, which fell among thorns, represents those who hear the word, but worldliness and riches are more important to them, and they fall away from the truth. The last seed, however, which fell into good ground, represents those who hear the word, understand it, live it, and reap great eternal rewards. 5Our hearts dont always represent good soil, but hard ground can be broken up and stones and thistles can be removed, leaving room for the seed to grow. In one of the most beautiful stories ever told, a young man left his family, traveled to a far country, and wasted his inheritance in riotous living. This prodigal son was left destitute and friendless. President Marion D. Hanks said, He actually was living with the swine, eating swine food; and then somehow he had the sense and the deep response to who he really was to look homeward. He thought it over again. The servants in his fathers house were better off than he. We dont read about the big battle, but I am positive there was one, the big battle within him that caused him . . . to take a faltering step toward home. 6

He must have wondered how he would be received. But when [the younger son] was yet a great way off, his father saw him, and had compassion, and ran, and fell on his neck, and kissed him. And the son said unto him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and in thy sight, and am no more worthy to be called thy son. But the father said to his servants, Bring forth the best robe, and put it on him; and put a ring on his hand, and shoes on his feet. And bring hither the fatted calf, and kill it; and let us eat, and be merry: For this my son was dead, and is alive again was lost, and is found. (Luke 15:20-24) We all find ourselves in the position of the prodigal son at one time or another. Neil A. Maxwell said, The distance to a far country is not to be measured by miles but by how far our hearts and minds are from Jesus! 7 But every prodigal who starts the journey home will find the Father running to meet him.

Song: Tender Mercy (Male solo) Two brothers were wrestling over an inheritance and Jesus was asked to be an arbitrator. In response to this request, Jesus gave this parable: The ground of a certain rich man brought forth plentifully: And he thought within himself, saying, What shall I do, because I have no room where to bestow my fruits? And he said, This will I do: I will pull down my barns, and build greater, and there will I bestow my fruits and my goods. And I will say to my soul, soul; thou hast much goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, and be merry. But God said unto him, Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee: then whose shall those things be, which thou hast provided? So is he that layeth up treasure for himself and is not rich toward God. (Luke 12:16-21)

Brigham Young said, O foolish men, to set your hearts on the things of this life! To-day they are seeking after the honors and glories of the world, and by the time the sun is hidden by the western mountains the breath is gone out of their nostrils, they sink to their mother earth. Where are their riches then? Gone forever. 8After the Lord gave the parable of the rich fool, He gave this scripture: For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also. (Luke 12:34)

According to Bruce R. McConkie, Jesus came to . . . open the prison doors of darkness and unbelief, and to let the light of heaven dwell in the hearts of men on earth. He came to give every man as much of the truth of heaven as each man's earthbound soul would permit him to receive. 9

Such it is with all truth. Only those who desire to know will understand. To those who do not seek truth, the parables are just stories. But to those who seek truth, parables reveal heavenly messages. A lamp becomes a burning testimony; a rock reveals the way to stand against the storms of the adversary; a seed reminds us that we must let go of the world to have room for the gospel. We invite you to study and ponder the parables of Christ. Through them, Christ shows us how to live in this world so that we may live with him in the eternities to come.
