Through J’EN RÊVE, the Fondation Cartier con-tinues its twentieth anniversary celebrations asit reconnects with the artists who have been apart of its history and looks ahead to those whomay be a part of its future. Offering the publica fresh look at undiscovered talents, J’EN RÊVEintends to capture the energy and promise ofyouth, shedding light on the lifestyles and de-sires of a new generation. Coming from suchdiverse places as India, Argentina, Iran andThailand, these young artists—who are for themost part students or recent graduates—will bepresented with the unique opportunity to par-ticipate in an exhibition that could potentiallybe the launching pad for their careers.
DIAMONDS IN THE ROUGH
The exhibition J’EN RÊVE is the result of a collabo-rative effort between the Fondation Cartier andthe artists whom it has worked with over its twen-ty year history. In September 2004, the Director ofthe Foundation, Hervé Chandès, invited 100 in-ternationally renowned artists to recommend oneor more young talents for the exhibition. Eachartist had his own way of meeting this challenge. Those who work frequently with young artists, such as the Brazilian sculptor ERNESTO NETO or theArgentinean painter GUILLERMO KUITCA, did nothave to look far to locate potential participants.Nor did TAKASHI MURAKAMI, who twice each yearinvites young artists from all over Japan to pres-ent their work in Tokyo at an art fair called GEISAI.For others, the exhibition concept provided an op-portunity to find creative solutions and uncovernew work. The Congolese painter CHÉRI SAMBA,for example, transformed the search into a city-wide event as hundreds of artists responded tothe announcements he had posted throughoutKinshasa. While some artists wished to proposeonly one of their juniors, others chose to send ina plethora of portfolios and allow the curatorialstaff to make the final selection.
AN EXHIBITION BY ARTISTS FOR ARTISTS
Twenty-something inParis,Shanghaior Rio…The selection of exhibition participants reflectsthe interconnectedness characteristic of today’sworld. ANDREI UJICA, a Romanian filmmaker liv-ing in Germany, recommended an artist fromThailand. Similarly, LOTHAR BAUMGARTEN, a Ger-man artist living in Berlin, proposed a Mexicanartist residing in the same city. While the vastmajority of artists today have access to con-temporary culture via the Internet, their per-spectives vary significantly depending on theirphysical location in the world. An artist livingin a major metropolitan city such as New York,a nexus of contemporary art, does not ap-proach art-making in the same manner as anartist from Kiev living in the wake of the socialrealist tradition. J’EN RÊVE reflects these individ-ual visions in a conversation based on distinctcommonalities and dramatic differences.
From October 2004 to March 2005, news ofthe exhibition spread by word-of-mouththroughout the world of art. Hundreds of“spontaneous” candidates were added tothe mix of “sponsored” candidates. In all, theFoundation received and reviewed morethan 1,200 portfolios. Along with the curato-rial staff, several artists such as CHRISTIANBOLTANSKI, RAYMOND DEPARDON, and NANGOLDIN contributed to the heated discus-sions and debates regarding the final se-lection, which includes 50 visual artists and40 live performances.

PAINTING MEETS PERFORMANCE.SCULPTUREMEETS CINEMA.J’EN RÊVE will present a variety of artistic forms:painting, sculpture, photography, film and videoart. Many of the artists selected work at the frontierbetween several disciplines. FLAVIA DA RIN, for ex-ample, an Argentinean artist recommended byGUILLERMO KUITCA, simultaneously produces pho-tographs, embroidered pieces, drawings and paint-ings. Canadian SARAH ANNE JOHNSON moves seam-lessly between photography and sculpture, cap-turing in her images both the real world and thesculpted mise en scène she creates for her camera.Nonetheless, the exhibition includes a well-bal-anced mix of painters, video artists, photographersand sculptors. In addition, several artists will pro-duce site-specific installations to interact with thearchitecture of the Fondation Cartier.
LABO-RATORY OF DREAMSFor the fledgling artists who have been selected, the ex-hibition J’EN RÊVE represents a point of departure: an op-portunity to distinguish themselves from their teachers andinvent their own artistic language. The exhibition will ex-plore how young artists in their beginnings struggle to es-tablish relationships with existing works—relationships ofcontinuity or antagonism, and the occasional mixture ofboth. This is perhaps why the search for identity stands outas one of the recurring themes among the young artistspresented, who in seeking their own mode of artistic ex-pression also seek themselves. Bringing together worksfilled with insouciance or seriousness, humor or pathos,J’EN RÊVE reveals the dreams of a new generation of artists.
Catalina León, ArgentinaRecommended by Guillermo Kuitca
As a part of the exhibition, young performance artists will bepresented within the Fondation Cartier’s continuous program ofNomadic Nights. Each week, several performances will be givenby musicians, dancers, and actors recommended by establishedperforming artists. During the week of fashion in Paris, a series offashion shows of young up-and-coming designers will be stagedby GASPARD YURKIEVICH and MAURIZIO GALANTE. ALAN VEGA willpresent a computer-hacker turned performer while EMMANUELLEHUYNH’s selection features the performing arts group ESSAIS.ROMEO CASTELLUCCI will put the spotlight on a young Italianartist. FRED FRITH and GEORGES APERGHIS have discovered sever-al exceptional musicians that will provide a look at today’s im-provisational electronic music scene. The Nomadic Nights willalso showcase a special program of animated, short- and full-length films realized by budding directors. In all, forty perform-ances will coincide with the exhibition.
