PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITIES Richard Androne (English) attended the annual conference of The American Literature Association in Washington, D.C., from May 21 through 25, and on May 23 he presented a paper, "'Like a Deserted Syrian City': Washington, D.C. in The Education of Henry Adams," to a meeting of the Henry Adams Society Craig Czury (English) received a faculty development grant to go to Iquique, Chile in June to speak and read poems at Humberstone Academy and at the launch of So far..so close: contemporary writers of Tarapacá and Pennsylvania, for which he selected PA poets. http://www.unap.cl/p4_biblio/site/artic/20140630/pags/20140630095840.html . Craig's chapbook of poems, BECAUSE ALTHOUGH DESPITE, from his Marcellus shale hitchhiking project, was published in August by FootHills Publishing and is available in the Albright bookstore. http://foothillspublishing.com/2014/id86.htm . The gathering marks the hundredth anniversary of the French writer's peace manifesto that appeared six weeks after all hell broke loose. The poster, "An Electrophilic Aromatic Substitution Discovery Experiment Including Hydride and Methyl Shifts", summarizes recent work done in collaboration with Ian Rhile (Chemistry)and Mallory Maskornick '13. These experiments have become a regular part of the organic chemistry II

Richard Androne (English) attended the annual conference of The American Literature Association in Washington, D.C., from May 21 through 25, and on May 23 he presented a paper, "'Like a Deserted Syrian City': Washington, D.C. in The Education of Henry Adams," to a meeting of the Henry Adams Society

Kate Lehman (Communications) served as chair and commentator on a feminist media history panel at the Berkshire Conference on the History of Women, held at the University of Toronto in May. She also published an anthology chapter, “Defying Gravity: Fox’s 'Glee' Provides a Bold Forum for Queer Teen Representation,” in the book *How Television Shapes Our Worldview: Media Representations of Social Trends and Change* (Lexington Books, May 2014). Lindsay Phillips (Psychology) presented the following this summer: Mixed-Methods Analysis of Successful Transitions from Prison to Society at the 122nd annual meeting of the American Psychological Association, Washington, DC and Teaching Applied Psychology: Students’ Experiences Presenting at Conferences, EPoster session and brief oral report presented at the 28th International Congress of Applied Psychology, Paris, France.

In May, Maria Mogford (English) presented her paper, "The John Updike Childhood Home and His Short Fiction" at the American Literature Association Conference in Washington DC.

Sue Palmer (Accounting, Economics and Business) presented “I Won!(?) - Using the Movie 'Nebraska' and a Publishers Clearing House Mailing to Illustrate the Elements of Unilateral Contracts and Illegal Gambling” as a Finalist in the Master Teacher Symposium at the Academy of Legal Studies in Business conference. At the same conference, she presented a paper titled “A Case for Enhanced Self-Regulation of Business Programs as Influenced by Higher Education Reform Proposals” with co-author Mary Ellen Wells, Associate Professor, Alvernia University. Gwendolyn Seidman (Psychology) recently started a blog, called "Close Encounters" at Psychology Today Magazine. http://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/close-encounters . It is my pleasure to announce that Adlai Binger, Music; Denise Greenwood, English; Kathy Ozment, Modern Foreign Languages and Literatures, and Rich Schott, Accounting, Economics and Business have been promoted to Senior Instructor and Betsy Kiddy, History and Latin American Studies, has been promoted to Professor. Sabbaticals: Mary Jane Androne, Professor of English; Chris Catone, Associate Professor of Mathematics; Julia Heberle, Associate Professor of Psychology, and Paula Trimpey, Associate Professor Fashion and Theatre will be on sabbatical during the Fall of 2014. Chris Hamann, Associate Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry will be on sabbatical during the 2014-15 academic year. Please note that faculty on sabbatical are not expected to participate in any college events or to respond to email or phone calls during the period of the sabbatical. Jacob Albright Members-in-Course Ceremony: Due to budget constraints, the luncheon for students eligible for membership in the Jacob Albright Society and faculty will not be held. Instead students will be notified of their status as members-in-course via letter and be provided with a certificate. The ceremony for lifetime membership the evening before commencement will still be held. Faculty will be notified of students who have achieved this honor so that you may share your congratulations. Roessner Hall: Roessner Hall has opened very successfully and with a highly enthusiastic response from the students. Dean’s Seminar: The first Dean’s Seminar of the academic year will be held on Thursday, September 25 at 4:00 p.m. in Campus Center South Lounge. Dr. Susan Albertine, Vice President at AAC&U will be on campus to give a talk on high impact practices. Dean’s Seminars were created by Dr. Tom Brogan (former Vice President for Academic Affairs and professor emeriti) as a way to provide a venue for faculty to learn about and discuss teaching issues and related matters. Although not mandatory, faculty are encouraged to attend. Suggested topics for Dean’s Seminars are most welcome and should be sent to the provost. Schedule a Guest Lecture in your class: Woodrow Wilson Visiting Fellow, Dede Bartlett, will be in residence at Albright from November 10-14, 2014. Dede Bartlett is a former Fortune 25 executive, Director of the American University of Central Asia Foundation, the Corporate Alliance to End Partner Violence and Co-Chair of the Jim and Dede Bartlett Foundation for increasing the number of women pursuing degrees in mathematics, computer science and engineering. Her public lecture will be held on November 12th at 7 p.m. Please take advantage of her residency through classroom visitations, lectures, workshops, student meetings, etc. You can contact the provost to arrange.
