MOKUME-GANE HERITAGE

Mokume-gane is Japan’s own metalsmithing technique in which beautiful wood-grain patterns are created by layering many different colour metals and painstakingly carving and forging them. This technique is said to have been devised by Shoami Denbei, a sword mounter in Akita in the Northern part of Japan, at the beginning of Edo era, approximately 400 years ago.Mokume-gane was also called “Tagayasan-ji (Tagayasan woodgrain),” comparing its pattern to the precious wood of the same name, or in the Meiji era, “Kasumi-Uchi.” The name “Mokume gane,” or “mokume,” has become widely known abroad as well.Mokume-gane is considered to have been developed from guribori sword mounts also invented by Shoami Denbei.

We are the only company to establish the Research Institute of Mokume-gane, and practice to preserve and research the traditional cultures and techniques we incorporate into all of our rings.

The unique style of MOKUMEGANEYA is to create the Mokume-gane pattern by combining unique metals that are differ from common jewelry. All of our rings are hand crafted by using a traditional technique from Edo period.All of MOKUMEGANEYA’s rings are made in our atelier in Omotesando. They are all “Made in TOKYO”.We had experience of hand crafting over 20,000 pieces of Mokume-gane wedding rings for couples.

“Tsunagaru-Katachi” can be completed by sharing the same plate of Mokume-gane to create two rings.The special feelings you have for each other will be recurred upon viewing the trace mark on your ring, and the bonds between you will deepen. It is certain that the rings will be unique, and unlike anything you have ever seen.

“Tsunagaru-Katachi” received a prize at Good Design Award in Japan, and Reddot Design Award in Germany.
