his wife were very discreet. Neverin the day time nor even at nightdid they venture into the parloror kitchen, and so they lived intranquility free from danger ofmeeting the cat. Their only sonFukutaro also was of a gentledisposition.

When he was oldenough to take a wife, his parentsconcluded to get him one, transfertheir property to him, and seekretirement. Fortunately, one oftheir relatives named Chudayu had

a lovely daughter called Hatsuka.

Accordingly a go-betweenwas employed to\ enter intonegotiationswith Chudayurespecting

the marriage. When the youngfolks were allowed to see eachother, neither party objected, andso presents were exchanged.
