I invite you to consider supporting the WSO’s Endowment Fund at The WinnipegFoundation by making a generous gift this year, or by making a gift to the WSO in your will andbecoming a part of the WSO’s Legacy Circle. Alexander Mickelthwate, Music DirectorGerman conductor Alexander Mickelthwate is renowned for his “splendid, richlyidiomatic readings” (LA Weekly),“fearless” approach and “first-rate technique” (LosAngeles Times). Critics have noted Alexander’s extraordinary command over theAustro-Germanic repertoire, commenting on the “passion, profundity, emotionalintensity, subtlety and degree of perfection achieved” in Bruckner’s SymphonyNo. 7 as “miraculous” (Anton Kuerti, 2011).

Following on from his tenure as Assistant Conductor with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, whichhe completed in 2004, Alexander Mickelthwate was Associate Conductor of the Los AngelesPhilharmonic for three years, under the direction of Essa-Pekka Salonen. Now in his twelfthseason as Music Director of the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, Alexander has significantlydeveloped the orchestra’s profile through active community engagement and innovativeprogramming initiatives like the annual Winnipeg New Music Festival and the Indigenous MusicFestival. Chosen to perform at the Carnegie Hall Spring For Music Festival in New York, May 2014,due to “creative and innovative programming” (CBC Manitoba Scene), the orchestra was the onlyCanadian ensemble in the showcase.

PROGRAM NOTESby James Manishen

Holocene ExtinctionHarry Stafylakisb. Montreal / 1982Composed: 2017World Premiere

The Holocene epoch, whichspans the past 11,700 years, encompasses the totality ofhumanity’s written history. Our species’s staggering

growth and development into Earth’s firstglobal superpredator is unprecedented inthe known history of the planet. Anunintended consequence of this explosiverise is the pervasive impact humanity hashad on the environment. Human predation’seffects on food webs, the destabilization ofbiodiverse habitats, industry’s role in climatechange, overpopulation, and profligateconsumption are among the principal causesof an increase in the extinction rate of plantand animal species to between 100–1,000times higher than natural background rates.

The Earth has experienced five massextinction events in its history, spread outover hundreds of millions of years.Humanity is the first species to havedirectly precipitated such a cataclysm –what has been termed the sixth massextinction, or the Holocene extinction.

This work is a symphonic poem, a meditationon our unfortunate complicity in thisongoing mass extinction event. The narrativeis set in four continuous movements.

The first, Eden, imagines an idyllic Earthbefore the growth of humanity. It seeks tocapture the simplicity and balance of theworld as depicted in our origin myths.Gradually, a sense of foreboding invadesthe dreamlike naivety of the opening.

In Arrival, humanity enters the scene. Afrenetic increase in energy and aggressiondepicts our rapid proliferation andtakeover of the ecosystem.

Threnody, from the Greek , or“wailing ode,” is an exercise in catharsis, apurely emotional response to this ongoingtragedy.

The finale, Hammerfall, evokes themassiveness and cold brutality of industry,an unstoppable force subjugating themusical landscape with mechanicalimplacability.

Violin Concerto No. 5Wolfgang Amadeus Mozartb. Salzburg / January 27, 1756d. Vienna / December 5, 1791Composed: 1775First performance: 1775 (Salzburg), withthe composer as soloistLast WSO performance: 2004; SimonStreatfeild, conductor, with Gwen Hoebigas soloist

Mozart keenly observedthe concerto form duringhis travels across England,Germany, France and Italyas a young man. At the

time, concertos were grab-bags of theold and the new, with Italianate “motoperpetuo”rhythms and the “ritornello”form of returning themespredominating. This, plus the emergenceof sonata-allegro form, with itscontrasting themes and structuralrecapitulations, offered tellingopportunities for Mozart to explore ingrowing the concerto as a genre.

Mozart’s five Violin Concertos werecomposed during five months in 1775and with each one Mozart shows anintense re-evaluation over thepredecessor. He was just 19-years-old,but with a compelling and fertileimagination, plus formidable skills onthe violin. (Mozart’s father Leopold wasa renowned violin teacher whosepublished methods were widely used, and young Wolfgang had dazzled onthe instrument during his first Italiantour at age seven).

Mozart’s last Violin Concerto, No. 5 in A major, is the jewel of the set.Theopening movement immediatelydiverts with its unusual structure – thesoloist entering with a short, dignifiedAdagio, and then a different lyricalmelody that what the orchestra setsout with. New material and richerharmonic development ensue.

The second movement is a lovelysonatina (sonata-allegro form butwithout a development passage).TheFinale contains the Turkish connection:an “interruption”as it were, whosemusical elements convey the popularityof Turkish subjects in Western Europe atthe time, for which Mozart provides alusty confrontation with the infidel East!

The movement is a rondo in the styleof a minuet, interrupted with a lively“contra dance”section of lustyHungarian and gypsy tunes – moreTurkish style than substance, as the

leaping melody, swirling ornamentsand drone bass convey the exotic.Occurring before the rondo’s theme islast heard, complete with double bassesslapping the strings with the wood ofthe bow, the return of the minuettheme feels as if the dancers haveexerted enough, gently easing theirsteps towards the quietly elegant close.

Symphony No. 3 ‘Espansiva’Carl Nielsenb. Sortelung, Denmark / June 9, 1865d. Copenhagen / October 3, 1931Composed: 1910-1911First performance: February 28, 1912(Copenhagen), conducted by thecomposerLast WSO performance: 1976;Piero Gamba, conductor

Born in the same EasternDenmark township asHans Christian Andersen,Carl Nielsen is among themost original of all

Scandinavian composers. His sixsymphonies become more adventurousas the cycle progresses, the Third amelodic mélange describing, as Nielsenscholar Robert Simpson wrote,“theoutward growth of the mind’s scopeand the expansion of life that comesfrom it,”going on to suggest Nielsen’s“sense of human energy and enjoymentof life” in exhilarating fashion.

Opening with 26 violent explosions allon A, a waltz of enormous scale ensues, the melody driving forward withvariations Nielsen returns to throughoutthe work reminding of Brahms’sstechniques in developing variations.

The second movement Andantepastorale reflects Nielsen’s ruralchildhood on the island of Funen.Beginning gently with horn and strings, the music moves into darker realmslater resolved by wordless baritone andsoprano human voices in contentedcommunication, as if similar toimpressionistic painting where, asNielsen expressed “the contours washout in an atmospheric haze.”

The third movement Allegretto un pocofeatures a restless oboe theme thatspreads throughout the orchestrabefore concluding peacefully. The Finalebegins with a march whoseintensification reminds of Mahler, withNielsen’s characteristic harmonic side-steps from earlier on signed and sealedat the blazing close.

Canada. His compositions have been playedacross Canada and in the United States.Orchestra works include Borealis; Solaris;A Farmer’s Symphony; and Triple Concerto forViolin, Violincello, Piano and Orchestra. His operaFilumena premiered in Calgary in 2003. Johnwas recently nominated for two JUNO Awardsfor his CD of orchestral compositions Frenergy:The Music of John Estacio.

About the Twins project, John says,“myinspiration for the music comes from mycollaborators, both Tolo’s entertaining storyand Doug’s engaging script. The story is aquintessential tale of good versus evil, with acouple of twists. Writing the music for the storyis a lot like writing music for a film – there arecharacters and scenes and action and it is myjob to make sure the music is an accuraterepresentation of what is happening in thestory. A collaborative opportunity such as thisis always a joy. As a composer, I spend most ofmy working time in isolation, so I welcome thechance to work with other artists.”

Tololwa M. Mollel, Author “Tolo” was born in Tanzania, andnow lives in Canada. He is astoryteller and dramatist, andchildren’s author of fifteenbooks, including the GovernorGeneral’s Award-winning The

Orphan Boy; Rhinos for Lunch, Elephants forSupper; Song Bird; and My Rows and Piles ofCoins. Tololwa’s books have been published inthe U.S., Australia, Britain, South Africa andCanada. Several of his works have beenadapted for the stage, including The FlyingTortoise; Subira, Subira; A Promise to the Sun; andThe Visit of the Sea Queen.

On Twins, Tolo says, ”My grandmother lovedto tell stories, usually at suppertime to keepus from nodding off, as supper took so longto prepare. Some of the stories were aboutmonsters. Those stories certainly kept usawake! We were truly terrified as we listenedto grandmother’s stories, but we were alsothrilled. In creating the monster in Twins, Iborrowed from my grandmother’s yarns andadded my own imagined features for themonster’s character. What I love most aboutbeing a storyteller is the opportunity tobring an imaginary world to life throughcharacters, images, sounds, and of course, song. I also love to listen to stories, for as mygrandmother taught me, to be a goodstoryteller, you have to be a good listener.”

Norma Lewis, Performer Norma Lewis is a born andraised Calgarian of Caribbeandescent, and has been aperformer most of her life. She is the co-producer andfounder of Maple Salsa

Manfred OvertureRobert Schumannb. Zwickau, Saxony / June 8, 1810d. Endenich (Bonn) / July 29, 1856Composed: 1848First performance: March 14, 1852(Leipzig), conducted by the composerLast WSO performance: 2002;Yannick Nézet-Séguin, conductor

As Schumann once said, music’s role was to shedlight on the depths of thehuman heart.

Schumann’s volatile Romantic nature, allied to a refined literary background –his father was a bookseller andSchumann grew up surrounded bybooks – led to an intense love for thewritings of Lord Byron, whose restlesslytormented verse drama Manfred (1817)provoked music of real affinity from thecomposer in 1848.When Schumannbegan reciting Manfred out loud for thefirst time, he reportedly burst into tearsand had to stop.

Clara Schumann referred to Manfred as awitch drama. It tells of a Swiss noblemanwho in wanderlust through the Alpsseeks to evoke the spirit of his much-loved dead sister by engaging spirits ofthe earth and air. But Manfred finds thatthey are of no help, so he goes to theghost of the Evil Principle whoseambiguous answers fail to satisfy Manfred.

At the end, defying religiousredemption and supernatural authority,Manfred gives his soul only to death.

As something like this provedimpossible to stage, Schumannconceived incidental music toaccompany a German translation inpoetic recitation. He completed theOverture in early November of 1848, andfinished 15 additional pieces byNovember 23rd. Schumann conductedthe premiere of the Overture in Leipzigon March 14, 1852. Franz Liszt led thecomplete drama with all of Schumann’sincidental music on June 2 of that year, proclaiming Schumann’s efforts asamong his greatest successes.TheOverture, with its large sonata-allegroform and tempestuous drama, followsthe plot.

Piano Concerto No. 3Ludwig van Beethovenb. Bonn / December 17, 1770d. Vienna / March 26, 1827Composed: 1797-1803First performance: April 4, 1803 with thecomposer as soloistLast WSO performance: 2003; AlexanderMickelthwate, conductor, with Michael Kimas soloist

The conditions ofBeethoven’s premiere of hisPiano Concerto No. 3 wouldbe quite amusing if theyweren’t so fraught with

stress for the composer. Beethoven’sfriend Emanuel Schikaneder was thedirector of Vienna’s Theater-an-der-Wien,and the two were hatching plans forBeethoven’s only opera Fidelio in 1803.Since opera could not be performedduring Lent, the theatre was available forBeethoven to present some of hisinstrumental works, which wasopportune since he hadn’t produced aconcert of his own music in three years. The date was set during April 1803 andBeethoven was looking forward tointroducing his Third Piano Concerto, aswell as his Second Symphony on the bill.

Schikaneder had a rival in the court-subsidized Kärtnertortheater, whosedirector Baron Peter von Braun had ideasof his own to snare an audience thatevening. He not only mounted Haydn’sCreation, a huge hit in Europe at the time, but snapped up Vienna’s best musicians, leaving Beethoven with a rag-tag groupfor his concert for which just one six-hourrehearsal on the concert day wasscheduled. Beethoven played his ThirdConcerto mostly from memory, notwriting it down until a year later for aperformance by his pupil Ferdinand Ries.Though the mild audience response wasundoubtedly due to the spottyperformance, Beethoven knew he had agood work and enjoyed a laugh in thepub afterwards with his page-turner whohad had fits trying to turn mostly invisiblepages encoded with scrawls!

As with the Fifth Symphony, the ThirdConcerto is in C minor and sets the keyout clearly from the first motive. Pianoand orchestra are equal partners, living inthe emotional narrative of the Romanticera, especially so in the second movementwhich is an extended aria that is sensuousand tranquil by turn. The Rondo takes theclassical form of a returning theme to new

heights, developing it further andextending its dramatic elements wellbeyond its classical roots, vivaciouslyletting C minor go to C major at itsbounding close.

Symphony No. 3 “Rhenish”Robert SchumannComposed: 1850First performance: February 6, 1851(Dusseldorf), conducted by the composerLast WSO performance: 2007; MarkandThakar, conductor

The beautiful city of Düsseldorf becamehome to Robert Schumann, his wifeClara and their seven children onSeptember 2, 1850. Schumann took onhis new duties as conductor of a mostcapable local orchestra, heading a musicfestival, and enjoying living in the heartof the Rhineland which was an area healways loved. Schumann’s lastproductive years of music-makingwould be there, and his “Rhenish”Symphony holds up a mirror to theidyllic surroundings.

Though designated Number 3 because itwas the third to be published, the“Rhenish”was actually the last ofSchumann’s four symphonies to bewritten and arose from a visit he madeto Cologne on September 29, 1850.There he witnessed a grand ceremony atCologne’s great Cathedral where itsArchbishop had been elevated to therank of Cardinal. The magnificent servicebecame the motive for the Symphony’sfourth movement – contrapuntal in stylewhose mystical sonority is enhanced byoboes, bassoons and noble voices oftrombones who appear for the first timein the work at that point.

The opening movement exudes joy in theland and the river, with a notabledevelopment section. The secondmovement suggests a drinking song in aslow Ländler, the peasant dance that wasthe forerunner of the waltz. The brief thirdmovement is a kind of German barcarollesuggesting Heine’s Rhine poem The Lorelei.“The air grows cool in the twilight, andsoftly the Rhine flows on.” Following themajestic fourth movement, one exits theCathedral in the lively Finale, whichsuggests a sun-lit outdoor square filledwith revelers. A triumphant recall of theCathedral music follows, with a nod to thefirst movement’s opening theme in theexultant coda.

Suite EspañolaIsaac Albénizb. Camprodon, Spain / May 29, 1860d. Cambo-les-Bains, France / May 18, 1909Composed: 1886-1896; orchestrated byRafael Frühbeck de BurgosFirst WSO performance

As a child, Isaac Albéniz wasone of the most spectacularpiano prodigies of his time.Aided by an ambitious father,

at age 12 Albéniz was met withthunderous applause on tours of SouthAmerica, the United States and Spain. By1873, he was considered a mature pianistand by 1880 he was crediting a briefperiod of study with Liszt as the catalystthat perfected his piano technique.

In 1883, Albéniz met composer-folkloristFelipe Pedrell who invigorated the youngpianist to his Spanish musical roots. Movingto France in 1893, Albéniz gave up hiscareer as a performer and became acomposer who would soon become amajor representative of the Spanish side ofmusical impressionism in keyboard workssuch as Iberia, Suite Española and Navarra.

In the mid-1960s, conductor RafaelFrühbeck de Burgos orchestrated selectionsfrom Albéniz’s eight-movement SuiteEspañola. Castilla (Castile, in central Spain) isa rousing seguidilla in triple-metre, withactual castanets as suggested in theoriginal piano version. Granada is anocturne, whose solo flute suggests theArabic airs of Andalusia. Asturias (from thenorthwestern coast of Spain) is representedby “Leyenda,”famously known from theguitar transcription by Francisco Tárrega.Aragón closes the suite, a lively triple-metredance with sensuous interludes.

Symphonie MinuteJosé Evangelistab. Valencia, Spain / August 5, 1943Composed: 1994Last WSO performance: 2001; Michael Hall, conductor

Born in Valencia, Spain, JoséEvangelista began his musicalstudies while also studyingphysics. Later work in

computer science led him to Montreal, where he settled in 1970 studyingcomposition with André Prevost andBruce Mather. Since 1979, he has taughtat the University of Montreal.

“This short work in four contrastingmovements reproduces, in miniature, theform of a symphony. The music is mostlynervous and light, and the tempo rapid. The piece is thus in contrast to themajority of symphonies in the repertoire, which is predominated by works of grandproportions in duration, instrumentationand powerful expression.

The first movement, Envol, is builtaround a very rapid theme suggestingthe flight of a bird. The second, Mélopée,features a melismatic melody of animprovisational character, climbing inregister and intensity. Combat is a veryrhythmic piece interspersed with shortrests. Presto chromatique is made up oflines rapidly ascending and descending.

Symphonie minute is dedicated to mychildren.” - José Evangelista

Concierto de AranjuezJoaquín Rodrigob. Sagunto, Spain / November 22, 1901d. Madrid / July 6, 1999Composed: 1939First performance: November 9, 1940(Barcelona), with Regino Sainz de laMaza as soloistLast WSO performance: 2008; AlexanderMickelthwate, conductor, with AlexanderDunn as soloist

Following early musicaltraining in his nativeValencia, Joaquín Rodrigomoved to Paris in 1927 to

study with Paul Dukas. There, fellowcountryman Manuel de Falla recognizedRodrigo’s potential and encouraged the26-year-old to become a composer.Returning to Madrid after the SpanishCivil War ended in 1939, Rodrigo madehis mark with the Concierto de Aranjuezand went on to earn a place among thetop tier of Spanish composers, receivingmany awards and acclaim for hisregularly Spanish-inspired compositions.

Rodrigo turned to the elegant town ofAranjuez for his inspiration. Located incentral Spain just south of Madrid,

Aranjuez has an idyllic settingsurrounded by royal parks and forestsand was a favourite retreat of Spanishnobility where the royals would enjoylife in high fashion. Rodrigo chose toinhabit its musical equivalent in hismuch-loved guitar concerto, lookingback to an epoch where in an expandedrole the guitar might, as he said,“possessthe wings of the harp, the heart of thegrand piano and the soul of theguitar….to sound like the hiddenbreeze that stirs the tree tops in theparks, and it should be only as strong asa butterfly, and as dainty as a veronica.”

The Concierto de Aranjuez has becomethe most popular guitar concerto in thehistory of the instrument. Its threetraditional movements embodydifferent elements of an older and morechivalrous Spain than the time when thepiece was conceived.

The opening movement ischaracteristically rhythmic and dance-like.The celebrated Adagio is thepersonification of Spanish hondo (deepsong), whose memorable English hornintroduction and succeeding guitararabesques have defined Spanish musicfor many. The Finale’s child-like openingtheme gives way to virtuoso display inthe solo, capping off an enduring workrich in Mediterranean spirit and sunnynostalgia.

Danzas FantásticasJoaquín Turinab. Seville / December 9, 1882d. Madrid / January 14, 1949Composed: 1920First performance: February 13, 1920(Madrid) conducted by Bartolomé Pérez CasasLast WSO performance: 1979;Piero Gamba, conductor

Turina was welcomed by his threecompatriots to form an alliance to fightfor the music of their native country. When Turina returned to Spain in 1914,he was regarded as a major musicalfigure of his country.

Gypsy and flamenco traditions arecentral to Danzas Fantásticas, Turina’sbest-known work, where fragrantIberian melodies and fiery Andalusianrhythms abound.Turina prefaces eachmovement with a quotation fromSpanish poet José Más, whose novel Laorgía inspired the work:

Exaltación (Ecstacy): It seems as ifthe figures in that incomparablepicture were moving like a calix of aflower.

Ensueño (Daydream):The guitar'sstrings sounded the lament of asoul helpless under the weight ofbitterness.

Orgia (Revel):The perfume of theflowers merged with the odor ofchamomile from the bottom ofraised glasses, full of theincomparable wine, like an incense, rose joy.

The Three-Cornered HatManuel de Fallab. Cadiz, Spain / November 23, 1876d. Alta Gracia, Argentina / November 14,1946Composed: 1917-1919First performance: July 22, 1919(London) conducted by ErnestAnsermet.Last WSO performance: 2010; AlexanderMickelthwate, conductor

The musical soul of Spainusually draws theinvoluntary response ofManuel de Falla, the shy,

meticulous master who abhorredexcess as much as he loved his Iberian

heritage. The Three-Cornered Hat wascommissioned by Diaghilev for hiscelebrated Russian Ballet company andthe premiere boasted a starry team thatincluded choreography by Massine anddesigns by Picasso. It was a greatsuccess.

With music drawing from a mix oftraditional folk and original material, theracy story is based on a novel by Alarcónand tells of a failed attempt of an elderlyCorregidor (magistrate, with his three-cornered hat as symbol of authority) toseduce the local miller’s pretty wife.Following a series of dazzling dances, festivities and the arrest of themagistrate in humiliation, the miller andhis wife are reconciled as the villagerstoss an effigy of the magistrate in ablanket, amid general rejoicing. Falla’sscore bristles with atmosphere andhumor, sharply characterizing eachfigure just as Stravinsky had done withPetrushka, Diaghilev’s previous triumph.

Armed with a truckload of enthusiasm anda truckload of instruments, his shows arealways lively and engaging!

When he is not gallivanting around theworld with Manny Tuba, the WSO’s greatestspokesperson, Mr. Mark is either busyperforming at children’s festivals acrossCanada, or making orchestras out of junkwith kids, as part of Manitoba ArtsCouncil’s Artists in the School Program. Ifhe’s not doing that, he is most likely atCanada’s Royal Winnipeg Ballet School, where he has been an accompanist andteacher since 1989.
