On Saturday 26th, prior to the com-mencement of the games I was askedto present the Tricia Part Trophy to theJunior Female Bowler of the year. Thistrophy is named after Past PresidentTricia Part of the NSW Women’sBowling Association.

In front of her peers, I had the

On the previous Wednesday at theRoyal NSW Bowling Association’sPresentation night, the award for theJunior Male Bowler of the year went toShaun Mawdsley, who is also from theWarilla Bowling Club.

It must be something in the waterdown there!!!! Or is it just a credit tothose involved in the Junior program ofthat area.

Community Development OfficersIn 2012 further to an initiative between

NSWWBA, Bowls NSW and BowlsAustralia, Community Development Officers(CDOs) have been employed. Each CDO isbased within a geographical region to provide a level of support and assistanceto affiliated clubs over and above previousdevelopment officer programs. experience and delivery of community programs.

The community development officerswill be available to assist clubs in the following areas:• Increase participation and membership

within the sport of bowls; • Providing support to clubs with business

planning, member recruitment/retention,governance, funding, programs, informa-tion technology and volunteer strategies;Implementing whole-of-sport programsdelivered at club level;

• Increasing the quantity and quality ofcoaches and officials; and

• Accurately recording local membershipand participation data. This new collaborative approach has

been made possible through a combination of contributions from BA, theSTAs and all funds raised through theNational Merchandising Program (BA logo). This program would not have been possible without additional participationfunding granted through the AustralianSports Commission following the releasethe Federal Government’s new vision -‘Pathways to Success’.

Starting the Year offR I G H T

• A forfeit having been notified to theMatch Committee cannot be rescinded, and players receiving the forfeit must benotified immediately.

• All Club/District Championshipsmust be run as an Open Draw, self-selected event, under the Conditions ofPlay, Blue Book for all Association events. There is no minimum number of entriesrequired in any Club or District Champion-ship. Any other Club competitions that theClub may wish to hold, eg. Minor events,Consistency, etc. are all under theirdomestic control and their own Conditionsof Play should be part of their By-laws.

• Club Major Singles and Pairsshould be run in the first half of the yearto enable the winners of these events toenter the State Champion of ClubChampion events, should they choose. Both events should be concluded by endof May of the event year where possible.

• It is strongly recommended that allMatch Committee members of each Cluband District, and the Executive andCommittees as well, are conversant withthe Laws of the Sport of Bowls and theConditions of Play, Blue Book andPennants, which will assist them in run-ning their Club and District with the bestinterests of their players in mind. CurrentLaw Books and Conditions of Play are a

NSWWBABOWLS NEWS

necessity for all Committee members andcompetitive players.

• All players should be familiar with theLaws governing Replacements andSubstitutes in any game to prevent a for-feit resulting from “ignorance of the Law”,or misinformation.

• Any member who is appointed“Controlling body” for the playing of achampionship, or any event, should beaware of the responsibilities/duties withthis position. The May 2011 Bowls News,Match article, outlined these duties.

• Club, District and State Champion-ships are conducted on a knock-out principle. Pennants at all levels are run ona round robin basis, and where numbersrequire in sections, resulting in a finalgame to get a winner.

• The Conditions of Play for anyChampionship, Club competition, Carnivalor Tournament should be advertised andfreely available to all players before enter-ing. Once a player has entered an event, they have agreed to abide by and playunder the Conditions of Play covering thatevent, eg. attire, number of games perday, duration of games, schedule, etc.

• Any Club or District that has anymember/s who are aspiring or currentNSW or Australian Representatives in anyof the selected squads, should makeevery effort to encourage and supportthese players and take pride in theirachievements and success, which reflectfavourably on their Club/District. Whencompiling Club and District Calendars theBA and NSWWBA Calender, which listsNational, International and Prestigeevents, should be taken into considerationto avoid changes to game schedule ifconflict in the timetable occurs and dis-pensation deferment applicable.

• The laws, rules and conditions setdown by the NSW Association and thedecisions handed down by the Board orrelevant Committee are made with thebest interests of all players in all Clubsand Districts statewide in mind, and not tobenefit or disadvantage any member ofone Club in particular.

While the above may seem a dauntingamount of information, we always main-tain that sportsmanship, fair play, con-sideration and commonsense are thefoundations of an enjoyable game ofbowls for social and competitive players.

As a result of a number of enquiries, discussions and problems, Match

Committee thought they would offersome basic guidelines to assist withthe running of Club/District Champion-ships and list some other points thathave been raised during 2011.

• Only one Club or DistrictChampionship should be conducted at atime on the Club or District Calendar(except for the State Open and SeniorFours). The process of introducing thenext event on the Calendar could possiblybe commenced as the event currentlybeing run draws to the final game stage. To help with the smooth running of anyevent, proposed dates for each roundshould be listed on the draw. While it isnot always possible to adhere to thistimetable, it should be used as a guide forplayers wishing to organize their playingschedule and availability.

• It should be spelt out what noticeis to be given before the match is setdown to be played, eg. 1 week, 2 weeks, next available play day, etc. Also that playor forfeit rule applies. Where play is ON orBEFORE the set date, any arrangementsmust be organized with the permissionand approval of the Match Committee orthe Bowls Organizer. Having done this, the new date becomes the Official Date.

Extreme Weather PolicyIt is recommended by NSWWBA that

Clubs follow the Bowls AustraliaExtreme Weather Policy (which can bedownloaded from their website) in con-junction with their Club Weather Policy (ifthey have one) which should be followedby all who are enjoying the use of theClubs green. Extreme Weather includesrain, heat, cold, wind and storm.

For the players, it is their ownresponsibility to drink plenty of fluids, and if you feel at all distressed by heat, appeal to the Umpire to retire from thegreen for a short time (10 minutes) orhave a substitute play for you. DO NOTFORGET TO SLIP, SLOP, SLAP.

Mobile PhonesRemember to turn them off while on

the bowling green. If you are expectingan urgent call, give your phone to a responsible person in the Club house, toanswer on your behalf, and to take theappropriate action, ie. take a message,or call you from the green and away

from the players so that they are not disturbed. With permission from youropponent/s you may leave the greenwithout penalty for a period of 10 minutes.

Illegal MeasuringIt is not illegal to use the crossed

finger method of assisting a player toattain an opinion of who is holding shot.It is illegal for a player to place her footbetween the bowl and jack to assesswhich bowl is shot during the playing ofan end. This is deemed to be prematuremeasuring.

Law 40.1 tells us – The process ofdeciding the number of shots scoredshould not start until the last bowlrequired to be played in an end hascome to rest or 30 seconds after that ifeither skip or opponent in Singles asksfor this 30 second period (eg. to seewhether or not a bowl lying at an anglewill fall of its own accord in that time).

If after a warning from the Umpire,Laws 1.3.3 and 1.3.10 would apply.

Wishing you a very healthy New Year and with the holiday season over, you are all back on the bowling green withrenewed enthusiasm. So it is time to remind all Players, Umpires and Controlling Bodies of their Duty of Care.

It is being said with increasing regularity that “mental toughness” is asmuch a part of the learning require-ment’s of our game as the technical andfitness aspects, and all must be includ-ed in a training programme that willtotally prepare you as a player.

Winning players and athletes whowork consistently with coaches agreethat learning is about 30%-40% technical and physical skills and about60%-70% mental skills.

The value of psychological traininghas been well proven over the past 20or more years in North America (USA &Canada) – nearly 30 years ago (mid60’s) quite a few countries in WesternEurope collaborated in a ‘Trial’. Theyeach selected a number of athletes covering running, jumping, throwing, etc.and a number of teams playing differenttypes of games and subjected them to aspecifically designed programme oflearning and training to test the validityof the claim that ‘Sport Psychology’ wasa necessary adjunct to any training programme.

Each type of athlete, sprinters, highjumpers, rifle shooters and team sports, soccer, water polo, hockey, were dividedinto four groups and trained precisely toa designed weighted programme.

Group 1: Their programme consisted of100% physical & technical training

“If you think you’re beaten, you are. If you think you dare not,you don’t. If you like to win, but think you can’t, it’s pretty sureyou won’t. If you think you lose, you’re lost already”

Mental ToughnessSession 1

Group 2: 75% physical & technical trainingand 25% mental training

Group 3: 50% physical & technical trainingand 50% mental training

Group 4: 25% physical & technical and 75% mental training

Before the programme started andagain at the completion of a 3 monthtraining programme, each team sportplayed a round robin and each individualathlete was pitted against the rest of thechosen athletes in their category.

The results in all cases was thatGroup 4 was the most improved, Group3 next most improved, and so on downto Group 1, which was the leastimproved group.

It was unanimously agreed fromthese results that all athletes and playersmust be trained in mental toughnessand must learn and practice the complete range of skills to competesuccessfully in today’s sporting world.

New Constitution UpdateWork on the draft of the new State

By-Laws is underway and followingapproval by the Board early 2012 will beforwarded to our Solicitors for a finalcheck. It is envisaged copies of the newConstitution and separate By-Laws willbe available early February/March 2012.

Draft District and Club Constitutionsmodelled on the State Constitution havebeen prepared by our Solicitors and willbe available early 2012 fo examinationand refinement by the Board and eventual approval. District and ClubConsitutions as well as the District andClub By-Laws will be in template formand will be introduced to all Districts andClubs during February/ March 2012.

The Association is expecting allDistricts and Clubs to adopt the newConstitutions and By-Laws byDecember 31, 2012. In the meantime,

all current Constitutions and By-Lawswill continue in operation until cancelledor replaced by the Board.

GeneralThe CRB has been kept busy with

many telephone calls and emails relatingto the recent AGMs conducted byDistricts and Clubs. Most have beenroutine questions concerned with constitutional issues involving pre anpost AGM procedures. Unfortunately anumber of issues concerning inappropriate and incorrect procedureshave been reported; in some cases themethods used for the election of members were illegal resulting in theAGM being declared invalid with a newAGM called for.

Regrettably, and for a variety of reasons, some issues reported to thisoffice relate to conflicts between

members. In most cases Clubs andDistricts have been able to resolve theseproblems following Member ProtectionInformation advice or by using otherstrategies where appropriate.

If there are any members who findthemselves in a difficult situation, seekadvice and think seriously about anyaction you might be considering.

In a few instances where membershave been unable to resolve issuesand/or move on, fellow bowlers havebecome involuntary victims of the discontent resulting in ongoing andgrowing disharmony within some Clubs.Definitely situations to be avoided!

If you need advice on constitutionalmatters or Member Protection issues, please call the office or send an email. We will be back in contact with you assoon as possible.

WITH THANKS TO SUE HILL, BOWLS AUSTRALIA

Australia’s Golden Triples

Lifting The LidWelcome to the latest edition of ‘Lifting The Lid’.

On an ongoing basis, Bowls Australia, the nation’s governing body for lawn bowls, will provide the wider community with an in-depth look at the issues currently facing the sport.

With a range of topics to discuss in 2012, we start the new year by taking a look at the biggest national event on the bowls calendar; the 2012 Australian Open, and preview the annual BCiB Awards Night, which recognises the sport’s most outstanding achievers.

I trust you will find it informative.

Neil Dalrymple Bowls Australia CEO

Bowls’ ultimate battleground

The Southern Hemisphere’s biggest and most lucrative bowls event is steeped in rich heritage and has established itself as one of the world’s pre-eminent tournaments, attracting an international calibre field each year, with some of the nation’s finest bowlers topping the dais since the events inception in 2005.

With a six figure prize purse up for grabs, the event will again be staged at the host venue of the 2006 Melbourne Commonwealth Games, the Darebin International Sports Centre, and will feature some of the game’s biggest stars in attendance.

World number one and reigning singles title holder Leif Selby will headline an impressive list of champion bowlers looking to contest the prestigious tournament.

A star studded list featuring world number two Brett Wilkie, world number five Aron Sherriff, Commonwealth Games gold medallist Mark Casey and Asia Pacific Championships gold medallist Nathan Rice will all vie for the blue-ribbon singles crown, while master class bowlers Neil Burkett and Jeremy Henry proved they cannot be ruled out of contention by claiming the recent NSW Open and Australian Indoor Championships titles respectively.

In the women’s singles, Victoria’s Lisa Phillips will be looking to defend her trophy but will be pitted against the likes of Australian vice-captain Karen Murphy, world number eight Kelsey Cottrell and 2008 singles champion Katrina Wright.

A number of international raiders are also poised to line-up in the event, with the opportunity to prepare Down Under for the up-coming World Championships too good to pass up.

In the men’s draw, 128 competitors will gun for glory in the singles and 32 for both the pairs and triples.

The women’s draw comprises of 64 positions in the singles and 32 for both the pairs and triples.

Due to the enormity of the event, a

large number of volunteers and technical officials are required each year to ensure the smooth running of the competition over the seven days. I would like to issue a call to those interested in volunteering to contact (03) 9480 7100 or [email protected].

2012 BCiB Awards Night

The 2012 Bowls Australia Awards Night will undergo a change of scenery this year as it strives to exceed the expectations heaped on it following the success of the inaugural event, which was held in front of a capacity crown at Melbourne’s Crown Casino last February. Staged at the Park Hyatt Melbourne on the eve of the Australian Open, the BCiB Awards Night aims to recognise the outstanding achievements of the nation’s current crop of bowlers and administrators, with eleven categories up for grabs including male and female bowler of the year, coach of the year, official of the year and volunteer of the year, among others.

Tickets for the BCiB Awards Night are available to the public via www.bowlsaustralia.com.au and I strongly encourage everyone to purchase tickets early as they are expected to sell out quickly and this is a night not to be missed.

I would tell them to try to be patient, keep your sense of humour and enjoyplaying a great game.

Have you had any funny or interestingexperiences you would like to share withus?

In a No. 3 pennant game a few yearsago, we were playing for the flag, down16-1, our other side were in front andmy girls were very despondent. As wewalked up the green I told them if theywanted to get on the bus to CoffsHarbour they had better lift their game. They all burst out laughing and became

If you could go anywhere on a dreamholiday, where would you go and whowould you take along to share it withyou?

I would like to go to Ireland as that iswhere my grandfather came from toAustralia in 1912, and I would take anyone who would like to come withme.

What makes you proud to be a bowler? Not only do I love to play the game

but it is the mateship that I formed overthe past 16 years, especially when I lostmy husband. Wherever I go I alwaysmeet someone I have met throughbowls.

Super Special Day

This special group of women areloyal members of Tuncurry BC, one

is a Foundation member, two are over90 years, and four of them 40 yearsplus membership. They have been thebackbone of what clubs are all about.

Back in the days when we had tomake the lunches (for the men as well),wash and dry dishes, make morningteas, entertain with “acts” in concerts atthe drop of a hat, and generally do whatwe all emulate in this busy world of clublife.

They are winners with Pennant flags,Club and District Badges, proudly wornand always happy to be involved in theclub. One lady travels each week fromSeal Rocks, rain hail or shine. Some ofthem are the first to put their hands up

when a job needs to be done. So Tuncurry thought it was a nice

way to say thank you for their contribu-

tion and many years of service. Each club has a myriad of stories to

be told and this is just one of them.

Letterbox

Congratulations ladies, it is indeed good news to hear of a newclub. Long may you prosper!

Dear Editor,The decision has been made apparently that the Districts and

Zones are now into Regions. I ask that the organisers of thesebe very considerate how they couple regions for the travelling tointer-region events, ie playoffs.

Most small country clubs do not have the resources to aidplayers financially so the cost of travel and accommodation issubstantial. Travelling time can amount to many hours. Perhaps it would be less costly to pay the fines imposed for non-attendance, but then the consequences are harsh.

NSW is a large state and country players are aware of theproblems of distances travelled as we do it all the time within theDistricts and Zones. So I ask that the organisers be aware andvery considerate regarding this new venture.

Marnie Meacham, West Wyalong WBC

Dear Marnie,Thank you for your letter of November 10, 2011. Please be

advised that the Districts are exactly as they were before when inGroups. The only thing that has changed is the name from “Group” to“Regions”. Your previous Group G has been divided into two, Regions10 and 11; covering Central Riverina, South Western and SouthernSlopes. Therefore you would have smaller distances to travel and Ihope this explanation will be of help.

Dear Editor,It is way too often these days, that we hear of Bowling clubs,

closing down. So it is with great delight that the formation of anew club – Western Suburbs Bowling Club, is announced.

Western Suburbs is a club within a club of Western SuburbsLeagues Club (West Ashfield) and play at Wests Sports BowlingClub in Croydon. The ladies are very thankful to receive the fullsupport of both these clubs.

The club has grown from the original ten Foundation mem-bers to 20 members in a short two months. This is mainly due totwo very successful recruitment days held in September. Thevery first tournament was on the weekend of November 12-13,2011.

Play days are Tuesday and Saturday mornings. With threegreens, and ample off street parking, the members look forwardto welcoming lady bowlers who wish to join us for a friendlygame. Please ring the club 9797 6888 before 9am on play days.
