GOSPEL MEDITATION

January 7, 2018 The Epiphany of the Lord

"Then they opened their treasures and offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh." What a wonderful example the Magi give us in their visit to the infant Jesus. First of all, they demon-strate profound faith in God's word, spoken through the prophet Micah: "And you, Bethlehem ... from you shall come a ruler who is to shepherd my people Israel" (cf. 5:2). Embarking on a long and difficult journey, they trust that they will find this newborn king of the Jews in Bethlehem as the prophecy announced.

On their arrival at the home of the Holy Family, the Magi also give us an example of profound humility. These important men, to whom kings look for guidance and advice, do not hesitate to bow down, to "prostrate themselves" and give homage to a tiny babe. Putting their own position out of their minds, they reverently wor-ship the infant Lord even as he sits on the lap of his mother. The generosity of these three "kings" is also evident as they open their treasure boxes and give to the poor child the richest of gifts. Traditionally, we understand the gold to symbolize the earthly kingship of Christ, the frankincense to represent his divinity, and the myrrh to stand as a symbol of the anointing he will receive upon his death.

Finally, the wisdom of these men is evident in their decision to return to their country "by another way." Understanding the threat that King Herod posed to Jesus, they followed a plan that would help keep the divine child safe even though it meant inconven-ience to themselves.

Faith, humility, generosity, and wisdom. These gifts are the real legacy of the Three Kings. Today, let us ask God for the blessing of having these gifts in our lives.

Yours in Christ, Fr. Brian

Hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas and a Happy New Year and are enjoying the Winter Break! Faith Formation classes will resume this week January 8th. All Catholic School children joining us for sacrament preparation, First Reconciliation and First Communion/Confirmation must be registered by January 8th. The fee is $35.00 per student and you may register in the Parish Office. Sacrament classes (Second, Third and Heritage) are closed until next fall, except for the Catholic School students. All other grade level classes remain open all year. Easter is early this year, so it is very important that all children receiving sacraments are here every week as we have less class time to prepare for reception of First Reconciliation, Confirmation and Eucharist. First Recon-ciliation for all second graders will be Saturday, March 24, 2018 @ 10:00am. Confirmation and First Communion will be celebrat-ed at 2:00pm on Sunday, April 8, 2018. As always, if you have any questions, comments or concerns about Elementary Faith Formation, Sacrament Preparation (Elementary, Middle or High School) or Adult Confirmation or you would like to be a catechist for Faith Formation, please con-tact me at [email protected] or call me at the Parish Office, 480-661-9843, Ext.309.

God’s Blessings,

Kathie

Adult Confirmation

St. Bernard’s will offer an evening of preparation for the sacra-ment of Confirmation for all adults, 18 and over and out of High School. This is not for those seeking conversion to the Catholic Faith. This is a class designed for those whom, for whatever rea-son, missed the sacrament of Confirmation at an earlier age. Confirmation is the second sacrament of Initiation and has been offered at different ages all around the country. Our diocese has moved the sacrament to third grade and it is now received at the First Communion Mass.

Come and learn about the theology, history, symbols and the

powerful work of the Holy Spirit as the gifts and fruits of the Spirit

are bestowed upon the candidate at Confirmation. There will be

one evening of preparation offered at St. Bernard’s, so please try

to schedule some time to complete your initiation into the Catho-

lic Faith. You cannot be a sponsor or godparent without recep-

tion of the sacrament of Confirmation. Class will be held on

Thursday, March 1, 2018 from 7-9pm. Please call Kathie at the

Parish Center, 480-661-9843 ex 309 or email her at

[email protected] to register for class or for more information.
