  • Volume 21 THE BAPTISM OF THE LORD January 10, 2021

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, While it hardly seems possible that another year has come to a close, and as we embark on a new year, I want to take this opportunity to thank all of the volunteers and committees who help make our liturgies beautiful, not just during the holidays, but throughout the year. Even though we are in the midst of battling the Coronavirus pandemic, we are elated to have parishioners in the church pews again; there is nothing quite as gratifying as the warmth of camaraderie in an environment where we tend to feel the love of God more profoundly through the liturgy and Holy Eucharist, the source and summit of our faith, and the people worshiping alongside us. Mass times are in the bulletin, including information about our live-streaming of the 10:00 a.m. Sunday Mass every week…we are indeed celebrating the ability of being able to have these Masses, and are moving forward with planning the liturgies for the year. I'm sure this past year held many challenges for many. If your life is anything like mine, it can seem like you're on a roller coaster ride that you didn't sign up for, but are on it anyway. Well, one thing is certain, and that is that this year will be no different, but no one is ever alone; our Lord and parish family is always with you in spirit. If you need assistance, please reach out to us, and know that we will do our best to lend a hand. I want you all to know how much Fr. Joyce, Fr. Tom, Deacon Richard, I and the staff appreciate your support, prayers, and patience during this unprecedented time; we look to the day that this pandemic ends and we can resume our regular lives. In the meantime, be safe; protect yourselves. Know that our thoughts and prayers for a happy, healthy, and blessed New Year are with you all. Deacon Jim

    HAPPY NEW YEAR!

    THE WATERS OF BAPTISM

When new sod is put in, it needs constant saturation with water. Landscapers say that this “knits” the sod to the soil. The same when a branch is grafted onto a tree: the poultice that joins them at the splice must be kept wet at all times. Water is the stuff that binds the very cells of our bodies together. No wonder religions throughout all times and cultures have used it so prominently. When Jesus stepped into the Jordan for baptism, he “knit” himself to what had come before him. By going to the Jordan, he made himself one with the people of Israel who had crossed it into their Promised Land. With John the Baptist, Christ wove himself into the prophetic tradition that heralded the coming reign of God. He had become fully human in the waters of Mary’s womb, and by partaking in the rite of the baptism of repentance, Jesus identified himself with our sinful, frail humanity. It is through the waters of baptism that Christ continues to graft new members onto his Body, the Church; through these waters we are cleansed from sin and filled with the promise of grace, given our destiny for eternal life. For us, as for Jesus, it is also the waters of baptism that inaugurate our mission to proclaim the Good News. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

    POPE FRANCIS ANNOUNCES

    “YEAR OF ST. JOSEPH”

12/08/2020—12/08/2021 Although the announcement might not have reached you, this is the Year of St. Joseph. On December 8, Pope Francis issued the apostolic le er “Patris corde,” or in English, “With a Father’s Heart.” With this decree, Pope Francis invited all of the Catholic world to turn toward St. Joseph, to become more familiar with him, to ask him to accompany us more closely. This journey of going to Joseph runs from December 8, 2020 and will conclude on December 8, 2021. This journey is about loving Jesus how Joseph loved him, to love “with a father’s heart.” The year invites us to become aware of Joseph and to meditate on his role in salva on history. We are called to ask, again and again, who was Joseph? What impact did he have on the Holy Family? We have had these papal “years” before. I think of two of my recent favorites—the Year of St. Paul and the Year of Mercy. These years help us focus and maybe quiet down the brain a bit, given the 21st century’s overload of data constantly streaming toward us. Specifically, for the Year of St. Joseph, I suggest regular prayer and medita on to ask ques ons such as the following: In order to help you in this prayer, I have two sugges ons. One is to look at one’s own consecra on to St. Joseph. Just as we might have done with St. Louis de Mon ort’s thirty-three days’ consecra on to Mary, we can do the same with St. Joseph. To walk you through this consecra on, you can get a copy of Consecra on to St. Joseph, by Father Donald Calloway (widely available at Catholic bookstores or on Amazon—paperback or Kindle). Second, go to www.yearofstjoseph.org, a website run by the Diocese of Charlo e. There are many valuable resources there to guide you. Below is a prayer you might use for the Year of St. Joseph, first composed by Pope Leo XIII in 1889. May these words guide you and lead you closer to St. Joseph, the Righteous Man.

To you, O blessed Joseph, do we come in our afflic ons, and having implored the help of your most holy Spouse, we confidently invoke your patronage also.

Through that charity which bound you to the Immaculate Virgin Mother of God and through the paternal love with which you embraced the Child Jesus, we humbly beg you graciously to regard the inheritance which Jesus Christ has purchased by his Blood, and with your power and strength to aid us in our necessi es.

O most watchful guardian of the Holy Family, defend the chosen children of Jesus Christ; O most loving father, ward off from us every contagion of error and corrup ng influence; O our most mighty protector, be kind to us and from heaven assist us in our struggle with the power of darkness.

As once you rescued the Child Jesus from deadly peril, so now protect God’s Holy Church from the snares of the enemy and from all adversity; shield, too, each one of us by your constant protec on, so that, supported by your example and your aid, we may be able to live piously, to die in holiness, and to obtain eternal happiness in heaven. Amen.

    • Who are you, St. Joseph? • What do you want me to know about your being the father of Jesus? • Do I dare to emulate your courage, your love for Mary and Jesus? • Will you teach obedience and humility to me? • Will you ask your Son to send me the grace to be a be er father myself?

FEAST OF FAITH The Sign of the Cross

At the beginning of our prayer, we make the sign of the cross together. This sign, simple and powerful, operates on many levels. We trace the sign of the cross over our bodies, reminding ourselves that the cross of Christ has become our source of resurrection, life, and grace. With this sign, we also profess our faith in the Trinity: the presider does not say “in the names,” but “in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit”—three persons, one God. The sign of the cross is also a baptismal reminder, for every sign of the cross echoes the words spoken over us at our baptism, which marked our entry into the saving mystery of Christ. This many-layered sign is also our primary sign of blessing: the cross is traced over people, places, and things upon which we ask God to impart divine benediction.

In blessing ourselves with the sign of the cross at the beginning of Mass, we acknowledge the mystery that has gathered us together: that Christ, the crucified and risen One, is living, and that we are members of his Body. Our response, our Amen, is our yes to all this, our first profession of faith. —Corinna Laughlin, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

January 13 – St Hilary of Poitiers Father & Doctor of the Church, Bishop, Confessor, Writer, Philosopher, Theologian, Preacher, Defender of the Faith. He was sometimes referred to as the “Hammer of the Arians” (Latin: Malleus Arianorum) and the “Athanasius of the West.” His name comes from the Latin word for happy or cheerful. St Hilary was born in 315 at Poitiers, France and he died in 368 of natural causes.

He is the Patron Saint against rheumatism, against snakes, against snake bites, backward children, children learning to walk, mothers, sick people, 4 cities.

St. Hilary, through reading and study you came to love the truths of the Catholic faith. Your love then showed itself in your willingness to suffer for that truth. Help us to know, love, and serve God by knowing, loving, and serving the instrument of His truth on earth— the Catholic Church.

January 10, 2021 THE BAPTISM OF THE LORD

Alone among the evangelists, Mark uses the word schizomenous to describe the dramatic way the heavens were “torn open” when Jesus was baptized (Mark 1:10). Through this cleft two important things pass: 1) the Spirit, descending upon Jesus, and 2) the voice of the Father: “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased: (1:11). The divine testifies about the man. This scene foreshadows the one that occurs when Jesus dies on the cross and the veil of the sanctuary is torn in two. At that moment, the centurion exclaims, “Truly this man was the Son of God!” (15:39). A man testifies about the divine. We hear a lot of testimony today. Isaiah testifies about the one who is to come. Peter testifies in the house of the Gentile Cornelius that “God shows no partiality” (Acts 10:34). John explains that the Spirit, water, and blood all testify that Jesus is the Son of God, referring to both his baptism and his death. Like the rain and snow of Isaiah’s poem, which descend from the heavens to make the earth fertile and fruitful, the Spirit descends upon on our Lord, rending the fabric that separates the divine from the human. In baptism the Holy Spirit also descends upon us. May we be fertile soil for God’s word and become fruitful in following God’s call.

How can you be fruitful in this new year?
