You see them all over town.

They’re either jogging, toting yoga matsor rolling along on bikes. Gyms are packedto the rafters and personal trainers neverseem to want for clients.

You can say that Santa Monicans are ahealth-minded bunch and January is theperfect time for all of us to re-new ourcommitment to our well being.

When people decide that the North ofMontana neighborhood is the area of townthat they would like to call home, many arecurious about the fitness and wellnessrelated amenities the area has to offer.

Here is a list of some of the features thatSanta Monica offers to those who strivetoward a healthy lifestyle.

Farmers’ marketsSanta Monica is home to four weekly

farmers’ markets widely considered some ofthe best in Southern California if not theWest Coast.

Everything there is certified organic andeach market offers a plethora of preparedfood options as well.

There are two in Downtown Santa Monica at Second Street and ArizonaAvenue — one on Wednesday and anotheron Saturday. Also on Saturday is the Pico Farmers’ Market, which takes place atVirginia Avenue Park (2200 Virginia Ave.).

Rounding out the week is the Main Street Farmers’ Market which takesplace in Heritage Square at 2640 Main St.

For more information, visitsmgov.net/portals/farmersmarket.

The famous stairsLocated along Adelaide Drive in the

North of Montana neighborhood, the stairsare a magnet for local fitness buffs.

There are two sets of stairs to choosefrom. A set of wooden stairs located nearSeventh Street are considered the morepopular climbing venue. It’s common to seedozens of people making their way down toEntrada Drive and climbing back up again. The stairs located at Fourth Street andAdelaide are made of concrete and offer asteeper angle with more steps, making theascent a bit more challenging.

Beach bike pathFor a classic Santa Monica experience,

hop onto the Santa Monica portion of theSouth Bay Bicycle Trail, which stretches 22miles along the coast — north towardMalibu and south to Torrance, with the mostbeautiful portion running right along thebeach here in Santa Monica. You can eitherbring your own bike, inline skates orskateboard, or rent from any of thenumerous shops lining the beach. Whateveryour mode of transportation — as long as it’swheeled and non-motorized — the popularpath offers scenic views of the ocean, as well as a great way to work out or just people-watch.

It’s important to note that pedestriansare not allowed on the path.

For more information about the bikepath, visit www.labikepaths.com.

Santa Monica State BeachGranted, this is an obvious one, but it

bears repeating. Santa Monica Beachstretches more than three miles along Santa Monica Bay, home to some of the bestcoastline views in Southern California.Swim, surf and sun — this beach has it all,try your hand on the rings at the originalmuscle beach, brave the waters for an openocean swim or really get into the California

culture and hang ten on your surfboard(during the summer surfing is permittedonly between lifeguard towers 18 and 20,and between 28 and 29). Stick around past rush hour and not only will you missthe traffic, you’ll also get to witness thespectacular sight of the sun setting over the Pacific.

Lifeguard stations at the beach arestaffed during all daylight hours, though the lifeguard headquarters provides 24-hour assistance year-round. For moreinformation about Santa Monica State Beach, visit www.santamonica.com.
