PROJECT SAFE PLACE National Safe Place is an outreach and prevention program that is uniquely designed to provide

immediate safety and access to services for youth between the ages of 12 to 17 years old who are

in need. In partnership with over 360 youth serving agencies and over 17,000 businesses and

community organizations across the United States, the Safe Place program educates youth about

alternatives to running away and homelessness and provides easily accessible links to service

providers.

The mission of Safe Place is to provide immediate help and supportive services to young people in

crisis through a network of business and public locations. Many youth do not know where to seek

help and remain in unsafe and chaotic situations. Safe Place partners with fast food restaurants,

convenience stores, fire departments, and other public entities that are kid friendly to display the

Safe Place logo which indicates they are an access point to youth seeking help.

Hillcrest Washington Youth Home is working with GLA to inform middle school students

about our local Safe Place program, in case they ever need help in a crisis situation. The

presentation will take place Thursday, February 9, 2012.

Awards Ceremonies

We will hold our awards ceremony for the 2nd quarter on the morning of Wednesday,

January 11th. The program will be held in the Auditorium according to this schedule:

K-1: 8:15 – 9:25

2-3: 9:25 – 10:10

4-5: 10:10 – 11:00

Parents and family are encouraged to attend!

Alcoa Warrick Operation’s Minority Youth Day

Some Glenwood Leadership Academy middle school students attended Alcoa Warrick

Operation’s fourth annual Minority Youth Day. The students day included tours,

presentations and lunch. Students were chosen by schools based on grade-point average

and interests. Our own Ethan Thomas said he learned about the “engineering process and

how they work, and then how to prepare yourself for a job interview.” This was a great

opportunity for our students from one of our community friends.

Basketball Games

The boys basketball season begins this month. The admission price is $1 for students and $3

for adults. The EVSC policy regarding students attending ballgames is as follows. Middle

school students may attend home games under the supervision of the staff and administration

at their school; however, students who wish to attend away games must be accompanied by

parent/guardian. For example, any 6th – 8th grade student at GLA may attend a game at

GLA; however, if the game is at any other EVSC school, the student must be accompanied by

parent or guardian. NO elementary students are allowed to stay after for ballgames unless

they are accompanied by a parent or guardian. Elementary students may not stay after with

an older sibling.

GLA Policies and Procedures

Morning/Afternoon Procedures

GLA students are allowed to enter the

building at 7:15 for breakfast. If they

are not having breakfast they enter at

7:30 to go to their areas to wait for

school to start. Students entering their

classroom after 7:45 will be marked

tardy. Students who enter the building

at 7:45 or after must sign in on the tardy

sheet in the office. These tardies are

recorded on your students permanent

record. Three tardies are equal to one

absence.

School dismisses at 2:40. Students who

walk, go home at that time. If you pick

your child up after school, you should be

here at 2:40 or a little before. If they

ride the bus, they will be home shortly

after. It is important that you are on

time or home when they arrive home.

Please mark your calendars so you know

when they have after school.

If you need to change the way your

children are going home you should call

the school as soon as you know you need to

make that change. It is important that

you call before 2:00 to be sure we are able

to get them the message.

If your child walks to or from school please

help them to understand the importance

of crossing the street with our crossing

guards. They are there for your child’s

safety.
