Grow your ownThe next few months are great for producing some home grown fruit and vegetables. It’s time to get planning and getting your seeds ready for the growing season!

The first vegetable on your list should be potatoes. Growing potatoes is easy and rewarding, just follow these simple steps:

Chitting - Stand the tubers in egg boxes in a light but frost-free place for 7-8 weeks before planting.

Soil Preparation - Before planting, fork over the plot, digging in some Blood Fish & Bone fertiliser to the top few inches.

Planting – Plant your tubers in rows, at the bottom of a ‘V’-shaped trench that is around 10cm (4in) deep, with the rows running north-south - this lets the sun’s rays warm both sides of each row.

Timing – ‘First Earlies’ should be planted from late February; ‘Second Earlies’ from early March; ‘Salad’ varieties and ‘Main-crop’ varieties from late March.

Earthing up – As soon as the shoots appear, earth up each plant by covering it with a ridge of soil so that the shoots are just buried. You need to do this at regular intervals and by the end of the season each plant will have a small mound around it about 15cm (6in) high.

Feed and water - Apply a high potash fertiliser throughout the season to increase yields. Water frequently to ensure you get a big crop – particularly once you see flowers on the plants!

Garden Maintenance in January

•Start planning any changes you want to make to your garden’s design. Adding bold, curved borders to your garden will create flow and a sense of movement.

•Be sure to clean your patio ready for use in spring. Patio Magic helps to kill and control green mould, algae and moss.
