January’s Health Observances

Each month has various health observances and it is interesting to note some of the more popular ones for January: Healthy Weight Month, Family Fit Lifestyle Month, National Get Organized Month, plus several more. The theme is to get us to start a new year in

the right way and continue throughout the year with a healthy lifestyle. There are many ways to accomplish that and hopefully you will find the best way for you.

Semper Fit offers a variety of programs and activities to get you moving. For more infor-mation check out the “things to do” tab on the MCCS-SC website at MCCS-SC.com.

Sometimes all it takes is a friendly reminder - an encouraging phone call, e-mail, or quick text message may be enough to get you — or someone you love — off the couch and into the habit of regular exercise.

In a study of would-be couch potatoes, peo-ple who received regular live phone calls with gentle reminders to exercise increased their average weekly activity from one hour and 40 minutes to two hours and 58 min-utes, by the end of a year. Participants in the same study who received computerized phone calls increased their average activity, from one hour and 18 minutes to just over 2½ hours.

“Whether it’s smoking, alcohol abuse, or lack of activity, people trying to change un-healthy habits generally need something more than will power,” notes Dr. Abby King, the Stanford University researcher who con-ducted the study. Participants in the study were called roughly every three weeks and were always praised for their accomplish-ments.“ Social support doesn’t need to be constant,” adds Dr. King. “A light touch can have a lasting effect.”

single Marine and sailor trip to the Bahamas

The trip was a 6 day cruise that left from Charleston, SC on Saturday 12 November. The first full day was spent at sea. There was so much to do on the ship, but most of the Marines just laid out by the pool and en-joyed the heat. The first stop was Freeport Bahamas, where we took a cab ride to Laka-ya. Lakaya is a resort with a public beach that had water sports available. The next stop was Key West where the Marines en-joyed Duval Street, food, and the beach. The last port was Nassau, Bahamas where some of the Marines just walked around in the city and some of the others paid to go to Atlantis which had a water park, casino, aquariums, and beach access. The last day was a day at sea and the Marines again pretty much just hung out by the pool. We got back Friday 18 November to a brisk 44 degrees. We hated to leave our delicious dinners and warm weath-er, but we were also happy to be home.

LIBRARYnew titles “seal target Geronimo” by Chuck Pfarrer. On 2 May 2011 a specially trained Navy SEAL team stormed a complex in Pakistan and killed Osama Bin Laden. Previously, little has been revealed about that team of warriors until now. Pfarrer tells the whole story as re-layed by the SEALs who took part in that raid. Through their descriptive words, readers will get the sensation of actually being there. “House of silk: A sherlock Holmes novel” by Anthony Horowitz. Horowitz brings Sher-lock Holmes’ fans the first new mystery ever authorized by the Arthur Conan Doyle estate. Horowitz has brought a compelling story to life based on access to the estate’s archives, careful study of the original stories, and geared for 21st-century audiences. “train in Winter” by Caroline Moorehead. An extraordinary true story of women, friend-ship, and resistance in occupied France. These brave women unified in hatred and defiance of their Nazi occupiers. Out of 230 of these im-prisoned women, only 49 would return alive to France. “the shadow World” by Andrew Feinstein. The world of global arms trade is a clandes-tine one. Now Feinstein reveals the deadly collusion among senior politicians, weapons manufacturers, felonious arms dealers, and the military. He pulls back the curtain on this secretive world and deals ranging from the one between the British and Saudi govern-ments to the role Israel played in helping U.S. weapons’ manufacturers sidestep economic sanctions. “Micro” by Michael Crichton. After Crich-ton’s death in November 2008, Preston (The Hot Zone) was drafted to complete the work Crichton had begun on this novel. The set-ting-- Hawaii. The characters-- graduate stu-dents at a biotech company who get dumped into the rainforest and must use their science smarts to survive. Crichton introduces a world too small to see yet too dangerous to ignore. “Where has Oprah taken Us?” by ste-phen Mansfield. One of the nation’s most respected voices on religion in American culture explores the Oprah Winfrey spiritual phenomenon. Born into poverty in Missis-sippi in 1954 and rising through talent, hard work, and despite tragedy -- she was raped at the age of nine and lost an infant son at four-teen -- Oprah Winfrey has become one of the wealthiest, most powerful, and most popular women of her age. Yet what makes her impact on American society even more profound is her decision to reject her Baptist roots and become an icon of church-free spirituality.

“Bill Cosby: I didn’t ask to be Born (But I’m Glad I was)” by Bill Cosby. In a hilarious col-lection of observations, Cosby shares more of his wonderful, wacky insights on the human condition through a host of new characters like Peanut Armhouse and Old Mother Har-old. The situations described include: his first date at age 15; trying to encourage his daugh-ter to marry an NBA basketball player; how he dealt with a grandchild who thought he was Godzilla, and more. “Kill Alex Cross” by James Patterson. When the President’s son and daughter are abduct-ed, Detective Alex Cross discovers that some-one very high up is using the FBI, Secret Ser-vice, and the CIA to keep him from the center of the case. Then a deadly contagion is discov-ered in the water supply and Alex realizes that someone may be about to unleash an attack on America. “Inferno: the World at War, 1939-1945” by Max Hastings. While other histories of WWII have focused on generals and politicians, Hastings chose to focus on everyday people who experienced it, from soldiers at the front to civilians both near and far from the fight-ing, and others. He also explains the geopoli-tics and larger strategic considerations of one of the most significant events of the 20th cen-tury. “Pacific Crucible: War at sea in the south Pacific, 1941-1942” by Ian W. toll. Six months after the attack on Pearl Harbor, in a sea fight north of Midway, four Japanese air-craft carriers were sent to a watery grave by the U.S. Navy. This narrative shares the story of that battle through first-hand accounts from the high command and the sailors them-selves.
