take Control of the Holidays

Don’t let the holidays become something you dread. Instead take steps to prevent the holiday stress. With a little planning and some positive thinking you may find that you enjoy the holidays this year more than you thought you could.

The holiday season, which begins for most Americans with Thanksgiving and contin-ues through New Year’s Day, often brings unwelcome guests — stress and depression. And it’s no wonder. In an effort to pull off a perfect holiday, you might find yourself fac-ing a dizzying array of demands — parties, shopping, baking, cleaning and entertaining — to name a few. So much for peace and joy, right?

Actually, with some practical tips, you can minimize the stress and depression that of-ten accompany the holidays. You may even end up enjoying the holidays more than you thought you would.

Tips to prevent holiday stress and maintain good health:

• Acknowledge your feelings. If some-one close to you has recently died or you can’t be with loved ones, realize that it’s normal to feel sadness and grief. It’s OK to take time to cry or express your feel-ings. You can’t force yourself to be happy just because it’s the holiday season.

• reach out. If you feel lonely or isolated, seek out community, religious or other social events. They can offer support and companionship. Volunteering your time to help others also is a good way to lift your spirits and broaden your friend-ships.

• Be realistic. The holidays don’t have to be perfect or just like last year. As fami-lies change and grow, traditions and rituals often change as well. Choose a few to hold on to, and be open to creat-ing new ones. For example, if you can’t

Can you survive the challenge? Experi-ence a variety of group exercise for-mats to help you stay active during the holiday season. Pre-registration is re-quired and class size is limited to the first

25 participants. To reg-ister, call 228-1504

or email [email protected].

be with family, find new ways to cele-brate together, such as sharing pictures, emails or videotapes.

• set aside differences. Try to accept family members and friends as they are, even if they don’t live up to all your ex-pectations. Set aside grievances until a more appropriate time for discussion. And be understanding if others get up-set or distressed when something goes awry. Chances are they’re feeling the ef-fects of holiday stress too.

• stick to a budget. Before you go gift and food shopping, decide how much money you can afford to spend. Then stick to your budget. Don’t try to buy happiness with an avalanche of gifts. Try these alternatives: Donate to a charity in someone’s name, give homemade gifts or start a family gift exchange.

• Plan ahead. Set aside specific days for shopping, baking, visiting friends and other activities. Plan your menus and then make your shopping list. That’ll help prevent last-minute scrambling to buy forgotten ingredients. And make sure to line up help for party prep and cleanup.

• Learn to say no. Saying yes when you should say no can leave you feeling resentful and overwhelmed. Friends and colleagues will understand if you can’t participate in every project or activity. If it’s not possible to say no when your boss asks you to work overtime, try to remove something else from your agenda to make up for the lost time.

• don’t abandon healthy habits. Don’t let the holidays become a free-for-all. Overindulgence only adds to your stress and guilt. Have a healthy snack before holiday parties so that you don’t go overboard on sweets, cheese or drinks. Continue to get plenty of sleep and physical activity.

• take a breather. Make some time for yourself. Spending just 15 minutes alone, without distractions, may refresh you enough to handle everything you need to do. Take a walk at night and stargaze. Listen to soothing music. Find something that reduces stress by clear-ing your mind, slowing your breathing and restoring inner calm.

breast, cut into bite-sized pieces, divided

• 3 cups 1% low-fat milk • 1/3 cup all-purpose flour (about 1 1/2

ounces) • 1 1/2 cups (6 ounces) freshly grated

Parmesan cheese, divided • 1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley• Cooking spray • 12 no-cook lasagna noodles (8

ounces), divided• 8 ounces thinly sliced 96% fat-free deli

Counseling Improves Marine Fitness and Wellness

Effective clinical counseling can make a real difference in a Marine’s well-being, and help them cope with the ever-changing stressors associated with life in the Corps. But coun-seling is often regarded with trepidation be-cause of some common myths about what counseling is and how it can help.

Counseling does not emphasize diagnosis. It is not one-way advice from someone who has not experienced the same stress as the Marine. Counseling is a non-judgmental set-ting in which Marines may discuss personal issues, generate solutions to problems, and build personal resilience for dealing with fu-ture stress.

Engaging in counseling is not a sign of weak-ness or lack of fitness. It is a sign of strength because the Marine is facing his or her stress with the resolve to heal and improve.

Counseling is not a sign of laziness. It takes a lot of commitment to enter into and com-plete treatment. Anyone who has entered a counseling program knows there is usually no “quick fix” to problems, and that counseling is not always easy.

Counseling is not designed to take the Ma-rine out of the fight, and does not prevent

It is dOd policy that:“The DoD shall foster a culture of support in the provision of mental health care and vol-untarily sought substance abuse education to military personnel in order to dispel the stigma of seeking mental health care and/or substance abuse/misuse education services.”- DoD Instruction Number 6490.08, 17 Aug, 2011

Command Financial specialist training5-9 December | 0800-1600Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort, Education Building 596 Room 215

Command Financial Specialists, CFS, play a significant role in the Navy and Marine Corps. A CFS is a principal advisor to their command on matters related to personal financial man-agement. These elite and influential service members are leading the way in financial competence and proficiency by educating those within their command on financial re-sponsibilities and challenges. A potential CFS will receive certification after completion of 40 hours of financial training. A potential CFS will need to attend an introductory meeting on 1 December at 1000 or 1400 to receive materials and to complete data cards in room 217 at the Education Building. In order to be-come a CFS, service members must be pre-screened and be paygrade E6 and above for enlisted and W2/O1 and above for officers. For more information please contact Sarah Miller at 228-7055 or Joseph Mulla at 228-2218.

the Marine from working hard at their job. On the contrary, the purpose of counseling is to improve mental fitness, help the Marine solve his/her problems on personal and home fronts, and deliver back to the unit a mission-ready Marine.

The other important component of counsel-ing is completion of treatment. It is crucial that the Marine is provided the opportunity to attend and complete all counseling ses-sions deemed necessary by a behavioral health professional.

Leadership, support of prevention, early inter-vention, and treatment completion is crucial to changing the attitudes that prevent Ma-rines from engaging in treatment. Counseling can alleviate stressors before they become so bad that suicide seems like an option. Early in-tervention is the key. Counseling is good for the Marine, the family, and the Corps.

– Joy Westermeier, LCSWClinical Program ManagerBehavioral Health, Family Advocacy (MFC2)

Counseling Myth: You are told you’re crazy/judged, or given advice from someone who can’t understand your situation.

Fact: Counseling is a non-judgmental dis-cussion about stress, and with help from the therapist, a source of solutions and resilience to cope with future stress independently.
