COUNSELOR’S CORNER

Build a resume Feel good about myself Feel needed Have fun Help someone Get to know people Stand up & be counted Make a positive difference

There are a million reasons why we do what we do, and you just read some of the reasons that people give to explain why they volunteer. Yes, people volunteer to make a positive dif-ference in the lives of others, but it’s also ok to want to get something out of it for ourselves, and you will! I would like to throw out the idea that you consider giving others some of your time and en-ergy when things are going well for you. The reason for that is so if there is a time when you need help, a person may be there for you. A couple of examples that come to mind are: a person went to Louisiana to help the survivors of Hurricane Katrina. A couple of years later they were getting help as their home was flooded in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Or, a person helps assemble and distribute wheelchairs and the next winter finds a person that offers to carry their books to class as they use crutches after knee surgery. Consider that most of us find ourselves in need at some point in our lives. So today you may be the person that is strong enough to lend a helpful hand, but tomorrow you may be the recipient of someone else’s volunteer effort. So, what do you get out of it? When you think about volunteering or just taking a minute to do something nice for some-one, I believe you could get more out of it than you are giving. You will feel good about yourself, feel like you are needed, feel proud and maybe meet some life-long friends. Take a chance - volunteer!

Pregnant? Don't Smoke!

Most people know that smoking causes cancer, heart disease, and other major health problems. But

women who smoke during pregnancy put themselves and their unborn babies at risk for other problems.

The dangers of smoking during pregnancy include premature birth, certain birth defects, and infant

death. Even being around cigarette smoke puts a woman and her baby at risk for problems.

Did You Know?

Smoking makes it harder for a woman to get pregnant.

Smoking during & after pregnancy is one of the risk factors for Sudden Infant Death Syndrome

(SIDS)

Babies born to women who smoke are more likely to have a cleft lip or cleft palate - types of birth

defects.

Women who smoke during pregnancy are more likely than other women to have a miscarriage.

Smoking during pregnancy causes major health problems for mom and baby. For example, smoking

is one of the causes of problems with the placenta - the source of the baby's nutrition & oxygen.

Smoking during pregnancy can cause a baby to be born too early and have low birth weight.

The Good News . . .

Quitting smoking before getting pregnant is best. But for women who are already pregnant, quitting as

early as possible can still help protect against some health problems, such as low birth weight. It is

never “too late” to quit smoking.

Quit for Good!

It is important to quit smoking for good. Some women might think it is safe to start smoking again after

their baby is born. But these babies are not out of harm's way. Babies who are around cigarette smoke

have weaker lungs than other babies. They are more likely to have other health problems such as infec-

tions and more frequent asthma attacks. Being around cigarette smoke is also one of the risk factors of

Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). Though quitting for good can be hard, the benefits are worth

it—a healthy baby and many more years of good health to enjoy with him or her.

Free Smoke Detectors Available from Sioux Falls Fire Rescue

Smoke detectors are an important in keeping your family safe.

Sioux Falls Fire Rescue has a program that allows residents of Sioux Falls to pick up FREE smoke detectors for their homes or apartments. Each resi-dence is allowed to receive 4 smoke detectors. National fire safety standards recommend a minimum of one alarm on each level of the home, one alarm outside the bedroom area, and one in each bedroom. The alarm that is placed outside the bedroom area should be installed near enough to be heard at night through a closed bedroom door.

How effective are smoke alarms?

Residential fire deaths have de-creased steadily as the number of homes with smoke alarms has increased. Reports from the National Fire Protection Association on resi-dential fire deaths show that peo-ple have nearly a 50 percent bet-ter chance of surviving a fire if their home has the recommended number of smoke alarms. fire increases. Replacing them after 10 years reduces this possibility.

Stop by the Fire Rescue offices at: 2820 S. Minnesota Ave. (37

th St. & Minnesota Ave.) - Monday thru Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m

You may call 605-367-8093 for additional information.

When should I replace my smoke alarm? Smoke alarms that are 10 years old are at the end of their service life and must be re-placed. A smoke alarm constantly monitors the air 24 hours a day. At the end of 10 years, it has gone through over 3.5 million monitoring cycles. After this much use, components are not reliable. This means that as the alarm gets older, the potential of failing to detect a fire increases.

FINANCIAL AID TIPS

by Carolyn Halger-

WHAT?

I HAVE TO COMPLETE A FAFSA EVERY YEAR?

Attention Financial Aid Recipients: YES! If you plan to continue receiving federal finan-cial aid (Student loans and/or Pell Grants) beginning with summer semester, you must complete a new FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) every year. Failure to complete a new FAFSA in a timely manner (each and every year you are a stu-dent) may delay the processing of your financial aid. The US Department of Education sends FAFSA reminders to students via e-mail and postal mail starting in mid-January and continu-ing until mid-February. If you receive this via e-mail you are able to link into the Re-newal FAFSA to complete your FAFSA quickly. You can submit your FAFSA as soon as you complete your 2010 tax return (1040, 1040EZ, etc.). Steps to complete the 11-12 FAFSA: Complete 2010 tax return (if applicable) Locate your federal personal identification number (PIN). If you do not remember

your PIN you can retrieve it at www.pin.gov. You can apply for a PIN at this same site.

Go online to www.fafsa.ed.gov and submit the required information electronically. If applicable you may need to have parental or spousal information. The Financial Aid Office cannot submit your FAFSA for you, however we would be glad to help you apply! If you have questions about this process, see Carolyn Halgerson (105) or Erin Hill (106).
