Gordon Hinkley, whose Milwaukee radio career spanned more than a

half century and whose voice was as familiar as an old friend to thousands of listeners, died at age 88.

Once called the “Granddaddy of Milwaukee radio,” whose “Ask Your Neighbor” show ran on WTMJ-AM (620) for more than 30 years, Hinkley died Monday, December 23, at the Village at Manor Park in West Allis, his family said.

“He was the cornerstone of WTMJ radio for so many years,” said Steven J. Smith, chairman and chief executive

officer of Journal Communications, publisher of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. “He knew how to connect with an audience, and you could tell he just loved being on that radio,” said Smith, the former vice president and general manager of WTMJ and WKTI radio. “People just believed in him.” Gordon Lyle Hinkley was born in Port Edwards, Wis., in 1925 and married Joyce Berryman, his high school sweetheart, in 1943. Hinkley’s radio career began in 1941, when he hosted a Sunday piano show at WFHR in Wis-consin Rapids after an audition for a talent contest sponsored by the station. “I remember when they built the radio station over Nash Hardware,” Hinkley told the late Journal Sentinel TV and radio columnist Tim Cuprisin in 1997. “I went up to look over the place and that was it. I just kept hanging around.” Hinkley, who also emceed a Saturday show for teens, served three years in the U.S. Army in

We Need YOU!!Yes - we really do need you. Your WBA’s Winter Conference & State

Legislative Day, which will take place on Wednesday, January 22 at the Madison Concourse, is fast approaching. It’s hard to believe that it’s been six years since your WBA changed the format for our Winter Conference to a one-day event with the goal of focusing on building our relationships within our State Legislature. The WBA Winter Conference, combined with the WBA’s first annual state-legislative Day took place in 2008. We knew that it would take a while to establish the new format of the event, our Calls at the State Capitol, and also to establish attendance

at our Legislative Reception in the evening after Calls are made. Over the past six years, we’ve seen our members become more comfortable on the Calls; and most importantly, we’ve definitely established a presence in the State Capitol. It is important that you register (www.wi-broadcasters.org) as soon as possible in order to assist us with pre-planning for the lobbying portion of the day. This year’s annual WBA Winter Conference & State Legislative Day promises to be better than ever this year (see pages 4 & 5). Governor Scott Walker will be joining us for our Keynote Luncheon; we’ll also be joined by Steve Bartlett, PR Director for Badger Honor Flight, as well as other Honor Flight Chapter Representatives from around the state, as we kick off our part-nership with all six Wisconsin Honor Flight Chapters for 2014 (by the way, thank you so much for your overwhelming positive response to my ask in last month’s column - Will You Support a partnership between WBA and Wisconsin Honor Flights in 2014?). Earlier that morning, we’ll again feature our popular offerings to help you gain EEO Credit, as we will feature our annual EEO Session, along with our Job/Career Fair. As part of the WBA’s Assistance Action Plan for EEO Compliance, both of these twice-yearly events have become a popular offering that many WBA members take part in. Don’t miss Tuesday’s Social Media Seminar (along with the WBA Social that night at Cooper’s Tavern) – an evening to Get Social with fellow broadcast professionals (a great idea brought to us by your WBA Young Professionals as well as the WBA Social Media Committee). So - remember, we need you! Please help us make the 2014 WBA Winter Conference & State Legislative Day our most successful yet.

= = = As we look to the new year, your WBA promises action-packed, education filled, member offerings that you will not want to miss. Best wishes to all of you for a safe, happy, and pros-perous 2014! Thank you, as always, for your time & support.

2014 WBA Foundation Hall of Fame Nominations OpenUse Enclosed Form to Nominate Notable Broadcasters

The Wisconsin Broadcasters Association Foundation Hall of Fame Committee is currently sched-uling the 2014 elections to the Wisconsin Broadcasters Hall of Fame. Therefore, the Hall of

Fame nomination process is open effective immediately and will run through Friday, February 15, 2014. Submissions should be made on the official nomination form and sent to the WBA Foundation office. (Note: A nomination form is enclosed with this month’s edition of the Wisconsin Broadcast-er) Honorees selected will be inducted during the WBA’s Summer Conference, which will be held June 18 & 19, 2014 at Blue Harbor Resort in Sheboygan on the shores of beautiful Lake Michigan. (Note: As a reminder, per the change in 2010 to the WBA Bylaws - which was voted on by the General Membership - the Hall of Fame Committee is now under the auspices of the WBA Foundation. The thought process behind the bylaw change was that the mission of the WBA Foundation in relation to historic preservation would better allow for a more in-depth review of the history of broadcasting in Wisconsin when looking at potential Hall of Fame inductees. In addition, the Foundation funds the Hall of Fame. Prior to this bylaw change, the Committee itself was the only item remaining under the auspices of the Association.) The Wisconsin Broadcasters Hall of Fame was established in 1989 and formally dedicated by then FCC Chairman Alfred Sikes. Its purpose is to honor those individuals who have dedicated their professional lives to the advancement of broadcasting in Wisconsin. Since then, 122 broadcasters have been inducted. The criteria for consideration for induction into the WBA Foundation Hall of Fame have been established by the WBA Hall of Fame Committee and at least for now, will remain the same under the WBA Foundation. The criteria include a requirement that a broadcaster have a minimum of 15 years of broadcast experience, at least ten of which were in Wisconsin. The criteria also include consideration of an individual’s contributions to broadcasting as well as their history of community and statewide service. Individuals may be cited posthumously. The Hall of Fame Committee typically selects 3-5 individuals per year to be inducted into the Hall of Fame. A nomination meeting the criteria for consideration does not guarantee induction. In addition, it is rare for someone to be selected for the Hall of Fame as a result of their initial nomination. Repeat nominations, while taken into consideration each year nominated, also are not guaranteed induction. Wisconsin is blessed with many wonderfully deserving broadcasters. The Hall of Fame Committee puts a significant amount of thought into selecting those who will be inducted each year. Nominations received in 2012 and 2013 will be included in the committee’s deliberations for 2014 selections, under a provision of the committee rules whereby nominations are active for three years. Anyone wishing to check whether an individual has been nominated may inquire at the WBA Foundation office at (800) 236-1WBA or [email protected]. In addition to those broadcasters already nominated (in the previous two years), the committee invites all WBA members to submit any new nominations to the WBA Hall of Fame Committee no later than February 15. The Hall of Fame committee will meet after February 15 to consider nominations, and the WBA Foundation will act on the nominations in March.

Europe and did some announcing for the Armed Services Radio Network. He also worked for WSAU radio in Wausau, and in 1950, he became an announcer with WTMJ radio, where he began hosting the station’s morning show. During the 1950s he also hosted a WTMJ radio and television show featuring Joe Schott and his Hot Shots, a country and western band. In 1961, Hinkley introduced the “Ask Your Neighbor” program, where he invited listeners to call and exchange information, such as household tips, advice on how to find a good spot remover and other everyday questions. “People would call in asking about recipes or how to remove gum stuck to corduroy,” recalled Steve Wexler, executive vice president for TV and radio of the Journal Broadcast Group, who listened to the show as a young boy and met Hinkley while interning at WTMJ radio in the mid-1970s. “Listeners loved him. Advertisers trusted him. And all of us who knew him learned from him.” For a time, Wexler hosted an overnight show that ended at 5 a.m., 30 minutes before Hinkley’s morning show began. “I would hang around to watch how a real professional did radio,” Wexler said. “Like many other broadcasters I learned by watching him.” Other shows hosted by Hinkley included “Gotta Minute?” and “Gordon Hinkley’s Wis-consin Weekend.”

No EGo “Even though he was such a big deal, he didn’t have an ego,” said WTMJ radio personality Gene Mueller, who now hosts the morning spot once held by Hinkley. “He was one of the guys, one of the grunts, as regular and common a guy you’d ever hope to find.” It was a humility that didn’t go unnoticed by Hinkley’s listeners, Smith said. “He understood and cared about every individual he was talking to,” Smith said. In 1997, Hinkley was recognized by some 6,000 radio executives and members of the Museum of Broadcast Communications with his induction into the national Radio Hall of Fame. “For nearly half a century, his crisp, com-manding voice has been part of the Milwaukee landscape,” Journal Sentinel columnist Cuprisin wrote upon Hinkley’s induction. The recognition followed Hinkley’s induc-tion into the Wisconsin Broadcasters Association Hall of Fame in 1992. By the time Hinkley retired in 2001, his radio career had already reached 60 years. 105.7 WAPL “Wisconsin’s Rock Station”

The demand for mobile content and mobile email usage has grown

aggressively and is continuing to grow at an electric rate. Half of all emails are opened on mobile devices, according to a study by Experian Marketing. Over 40% of emails are viewed on mobile devices

and the majority of these users will delete emails immediately if not optimized for the small, mobile viewing screen. A highly valuable statement to the everyday marketer but what does this mean for sales and broadcasting professionals? Digital communication is preferred by many and quite frankly is ideal, considering it speeds up the sales process. Given the current digital sales environment, I’d estimate that almost 100% of clients or prospects will receive email communication from sales representatives at some point within the customer lifecycle. Translation: If 40% of your emails are viewed on a mobile device and your email isn’t optimized for a small screen your message is being deleted and as a result you are only reaching 60% of your customer base. I’m not sure how comfortable you are with that stat, but I’m about as comfortable with Green Bay’s Defense going up against the Broncos’ quarterback, Payton Manning. (That was an objective opinion based on my personal perception) Media professionals are constantly competing for time with prospects, resulting in an atmosphere where you need to remain in front of your audience and captivate quickly. Most importantly, you must captivate first. “Prepare to win, or lose to someone who is,” a little inspirational selling quote by Jeffrey Gitomer; Principle #2 from the famous Little Red Book of Selling. I sure hope Dom Capers reads that one! (Again Packer nation, just an opinion.) Going forward, best in class companies and sales represen-tatives will need to design and time emails primarily for mobile viewing. A great mobile email will have a simple design and will not force the recipient to scroll down. Including hyperlinks in your outreach is a bad idea. If someone clicks on the hyperlink they will immediately be directed to a mobile web browser; diverting attention from the rest of the email. A study conducted by, MailChimp revealed email recipients are much more intrigued by subject lines that contain positive solicitations rather than negative admonitions: words such as, “announcement” and “invitation” have significantly higher open rates than those containing, “reminder” and “cancelled.” Furthermore, customization is always key when building any relationship; a simple name personalization (e.g., including the recipient’s first or last name in the subject line) will lead to higher open rates. Lastly, set up a professional email signature line on your mobile device. Most devices already include, “sent by my iP-hone/android” message by default. Your signature line should be automatically set up to include a departing short message, (e.g. thanks for your time, sincerely, best regards, etc.) and include a contact phone number. If your prospect or client has immediate questions and are viewing the message on a smart mobile device, they can simply touch your number to automatically dial. Follow these simple steps and of course always, prepare to win; staying out of the trash should be as simple as beating the Dallas Cowboys in December.

Educator’s ColumnBy R. Perry Kidder

Education Committee

WBA and WBAF are committed to education. Always have been. I am sure that is not new

information to most of you. For the past several years, as a member of the Education Committee, I have had the opportunity to witness their exceptional efforts on your behalf. The Education Committee is headed by Ken Beno and consists of dedicated educators and broadcasters committed to fulfilling the WBA educational mission.

Witness the annual WBA Student Seminar being held on March 1 at the Madison Marriott West. This day-long event is attended by hundreds of students all interested in our business. I encourage you to participate or at least stop by as you will get an opportunity to interact with the best and brightest from multiple Wisconsin colleges and tech or trade schools. By participating I learned a great deal from the students that was useful back at the office. For example, I learned students are not just concerned about how to find and secure a job but also where to find an apartment and how to adjust to living on their own for the first time. This changed how I interviewed and how we integrated a new and younger em-ployee into our station. Because of this type of information the Ed Committee looked for session moderators that were in the first five years of their career....they simply related better to the students. We altered the agendas to encourage more “lifestyle” conversations as well. The point....your Education Committee continually looks for ways to improve and innovate the Student Seminar to provide you with the best and most prepared talent pool. Another important effort of your Education Committee is to have their students participate at the job fairs in conjunction with the WBA Winter and Summer conferences. Over the years hundreds of students have attended these events resulting in an infusion of high quality talent into many Wisconsin radio and TV companies. Today I know many high level employees and managers that got their “break” by attending our Student Seminar and/or job fairs and are significant contributors to their employers. In the continuing effort to reach out to students on behalf of Wisconsin broadcasters your Education Committee is attempting to initiate a program tar-geted to High School juniors and seniors interested in broadcasting, marketing and/or engineering. The program is in its infancy but is another example of the outstanding and innovative effort of the WBA Education Committee to serve you. Let’s not forget the judging of student awards or judging for student schol-arships. All of these endeavors on behalf of WBA/WBAF take a great deal of personal time and effort on the part of the committee members. It is an example of their commitment to the educational mission......all on your behalf. If you get a chance please congratulate Ken and the committee members for their hard work and dedication....in my opinion they deserve it.
