Liturgy, An Open Window Into The Mystery

The feast of the Baptism of the Lord marks the end of Christmas season and the beginning of the ordinary time. This year it fell on Monday, January 8, the day after the feast of the Epiphany. And so, overnight, we went from celebrating the visit of the three wise men to a one-month-old baby Jesus to the baptism of a thirty-year-old man Jesus. It’s almost as if Jesus became an adult overnight. But that is the essence of the liturgy. In addition to being a prayer, the liturgy helps us to make a mental, emotional and spiritual journey with Jesus. Whenever, we worship God in the spirit and in truth, the liturgy helps us to relive the experiences of over 2000 years ago. It helps us to re-enact those precious moments of God’s goodness and by so doing we open a floodgate of God’s graces in our lives.

So yes, thirty years of Jesus’ life seems to have passed overnight, however, the Church also wants us to meditate on the significance of that. Jesus was anonymous for thirty years. He lived a simple life and faithfully worshipped his Father in the spirit and in truth and regularly going to “the synagogue, as was his custom” (Lk 4:16). During this time he observed the fallen state of humanity and our world, “the valley of tears” and his heart was stirred with compassion. He witnessed firsthand the moral decadence of the religious leaders who were neglecting the sheep entrusted to them by God. “When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd” (Mt 9:36). For thirty years his yearning to redeem and set humanity free intensified. Thus, the overnight could stand for Jesus’ eagerness to save. As God said through prophet Isaiah on the feast of our Lord’s Baptism:

Thus says the LORD: Here is my servant whom I uphold, my chosen one with whom I am pleased, upon whom I have put my spirit; he shall bring forth justice to the nations, not crying out, not shouting, not making his voice heard in the street. a bruised reed he shall not break, and a smoldering wick he shall not quench, until he establishes justice on the earth; the coastlands will wait for his teaching. Is 42:1-4

At every liturgy, may we allow our minds to be transported into the mystery of God’s love and may we worship God in spirit and in truth.

Liturgia, Una Ventana Abierta al Misterio

La fiesta del Bautismo del Señor marca el final de la temporada navideña y el comienzo del tiempo ordinario. Este año cayó el lunes 8 de enero, un día después de la fiesta de la Epifanía. Y así, de la noche a la mañana, pasamos de celebrar la visita de los tres reyes magos a Jesús, un bebé de un mes al bautismo de Jesús, un hombre de treinta años. Es casi como si Jesús se hubiera convertido en adulto de la noche a la mañana. Pero esa es la esencia de la liturgia. Además de ser una oración, la liturgia nos ayuda a realizar un viaje mental, emocional y espiritual con Jesús. Cuando adoramos a Dios en espíritu y en verdad, la liturgia nos ayuda a revivir las experiencias de hace mas de 2,000 años. Nos ayuda a recrear nuevamente esos preciosos momentos de la bondad de Dios y al hacerlo, abrimos una compuerta a las gracias de Dios en nuestras vidas.

Sí, treinta años de la vida de Jesús parecen haber pasado de la noche a la mañana, sin embargo, la Iglesia también quiere que meditemos el significado que esto tiene. Jesús fue anónimo por treinta años. El vivió una vida simple y fiel adorando a su Padre en espíritu y verdad y regularmente visitando "la sinagoga, como era su costumbre" (Lc 4:16). Durante este tiempo, él observó el estado caído de la humanidad y de nuestro mundo, "el valle de lágrimas" y su corazón se conmovió y se lleno compasión. El fue testigo de primera mano de la decadencia moral de los líderes religiosos que estaban descuidando las ovejas que Dios les había confiado. "Al contemplar aquel gran gentío, Jesús sintió compasión, porque estaban decaídos y desanimados, como ovejas sin pastor." (Mt 9:36) Durante treinta años el anhelo de redimir y liberar a la humanidad se intensificaba. Por lo tanto, de la noche a la mañana podría representar el afán de Jesús por salvar. Como Dios dijo a través del profeta Isaías en la fiesta del Bautismo de nuestro Señor:

"He aquí mi siervo a quien yo sostengo, mi elegido en quien se complace mi alma. He puesto mi espíritu sobre él: dictará ley a las naciones. No vociferará ni alzará el tono, y no hará oír en la calle su voz. Caña quebrada no partirá, y mecha mortecina no apagará. Lealmente hará justicia; no desmayará ni se quebrará hasta implantar en la tierra el derecho, y su instrucción atenderán las isla" Is 42:1-4

En cada liturgia, permitamos que nuestras mentes sean transportadas al misterio del amor de Dios y adoremos a Dios en espíritu y en verdad.

Classes this week are: Sunday, January 14th, 9:00 AM for 1st and 2nd year communion grades 1-6. Sunday, January 14th, 10:30 AM for 1st and 2nd year communion grades 1-4, pre-kindergarten, kindergarten, post-communion grades 3-8. Tuesday, January 16th, 6:30 PM for middle school. Wednesday, January 17th, 4:00 PM for 1st and 2nd year communion grades 1-7 and post-communion grades 3-8.

No formal mass attendance will be taken this weekend.

1st year communion interviews are scheduled for Sunday, Tuesday and Wednesday of this week. Students should recite sign of the cross, angel of God and Lord, have mercy. Attendance will be checked. Registration procedures for 2018-2019 year will be discussed. Family information will be verified.

First confession for Tuesday and Wednesday students is TUESDAY, JANUARY 23RD , at 6:30 PM in church. First confession for Sunday students is THURSDAY, JANUARY 25TH, at 6:30 PM in church.

Early registration deadline for ANAHEIM RELIGIOUS EDUCATION CONGRESS IS January 26th. Catalogs are located in the vestibule. Reminder that we are having a hospitality room in the Marriott this year. Hope to see our parishioners at the event.

The beginning of a new year always seems so hectic. I feel like a day hasn’t gone by since work has resumed where I haven’t been in a meeting for something and it can all be overwhelming. One thing I have noticed in all of my meetings is the reimagine or reinventing of something that we are discussing. There are certain things that no matter how you change them, the message or goal is always the same. Working in Ministry the message is pretty straight forward; God loves you no matter what! I think I have heard this message proclaimed at least 10 different ways this past week but no matter what the message is the same. Something I challenged teens with recently is to look at what it is that you think God doesn’t love you for, and do something about it. So as we continue to work on resolutions and making changes in this New Year, know that God does love you no matter what, and if you think differently than that, look at why that is and how you can change.

The University Series 2018

During the season of Lent, The University Series offers a multitude of seminars connecting faith with real life in areas such as current events, contemporary moral issues, evangelization, faith and science, marriage

and family, church history, scripture, prayer, and other priorities set by the Los Angeles Archdiocesan Synod. Sessions include multi-media presentations and always allow time for your questions. This year, 94 presentations will be held at 13 participating parishes from St. Mel in Woodland Hills to Simi Valley, Moorpark, Conejo Valley, Camarillo, and Ventura. Our faculty has extensive knowledge in their fields and love teaching. They include international authorities, priests, religious, professors, authors, lay people, and local favorites who are all passionate about helping our attendees grow in knowledge and faith.

Here are some important dates:

January 6-7 - Kick-Off Weekend. Catalogs and pre-registration materials will be distributed at all Masses.

12:00 noon at La Placita/Olvera St., our parish will join with tens of thousands from all over Southern California. We will walk through the streets of downtown LA for a family-friendly day of inspiring speakers, live music, food trucks, and exhibits from community organizations serving those in need.
