PASTORAL REFLECTIONS T.F. Brosnan

Kate Hennessy’s recently released The World Will Be Saved by Beauty, is the story of the relationship between her mother and her grandmother - none other than Dorothy Day – founder of The Catholic Worker movement and candidate for saintly canonization. I haven’t got to the memoir yet but was able to attend a reading by Hennessy last week in which she highlighted the challenging relationship between her mother and grandmother. Dorothy’s daughter, and Hennessy’s mother, Tamar was her only child (she had already aborted a previous pregnancy). Tamar was conceived out of wedlock with Foster Batterham, a committed atheist who, Hennessy pointed out, remained a part of Dorothy’s life through the years.

Dorothy Day was noted for her commitment to the poor and the abandoned, and renowned for her anti-establishment politics. She was a popular figure among many Catholic seminarians back in the day. While my classmates idolized Dorothy for her radical commitment to the poor, I was drawn to her – without fully realizing it at the time - because of her courageous and unusual decision to keep her illegitimate child. In those days a white, pregnant, unmarried woman almost always relinquished her child to adoption rather than suffer the societal and economic stigma of raising that child as a single mother. I suppose on some subconscious level my attraction to Dorothy was an attempt on my part to come to terms with my own story. It would be a few years later before I finally made the decision to search out my first mother and uncover my natal identity. Hennessy pointed out the fact that her grandmother was extraordinarily strong-willed. Indeed, it would take extraordinary determination, and some powerful supernatural grace, to endure the difficulties of being an unwed mother and raising your daughter amid the chaos of The Catholic Worker Houses of Hospitality, which welcomed the indigent, the addicted, and the mentally ill in from the streets of New York City at the height of the Depression.

Sexual mores in America did not change all that much from the 1930s through the 1950s when I was conceived out of wedlock. The story my mother told me was that she asked my father to marry her but he declined, citing their different religions as the main problem (his parents were staunch Lutherans and my mother Catholic, whose brother was a Jesuit priest). Though I feel the real reason had more to do with my “father’s” suspicion that, in fact, he was not my father - a suspicion I now believe to be true.

Hennessy said one of the reasons she wrote this book was to dispel the long-held myth that Dorothy’s decision to leave Foster was due primarily to a moral conversion on Dorothy’s part. In fact, Hennessy said, Dorothy struggled for years about her decision to leave Foster, entertaining the possibility on numerous occasions of returning to him. She wrote to him quite often, keeping him informed about his daughter and subsequent grandchildren and he remained part of the lives of his

grandchildren. Toward the end of her life Dorothy would speak with him on the phone every week. I remember seeing him at Dorothy’s funeral which I attended at the small Jesuit Church of the Nativity on Second Avenue back in 1980.

When I met the man my mother claimed was my father, he denied paternity. But it was clear from our conversation that he held a genuine affection for my mother through the years. He died a few months back and I contacted his son to ask if he would agree to a DNA test to settle my unresolved situation once and for all. His response was completely unexpected, saying that he would but it really wouldn’t do any good. “What do you mean?” I asked. “Well,” he said, “my father told me, just five years ago, that I was adopted.” Go figure!

This past January 1ST the New Jersey law enabling adopted adults to access their original (i.e. true) birth certificates went into effect. It only took adoption rights’ advocates thirty-four years to win this battle. Credit goes to the unquenchable perseverance of a friend of mine, Pam Hasegawa, who has battled uphill against the vested interests of politicians and the powerful influence of the New Jersey Catholic Conference (read: Catholic bishops of New Jersey). It was my honor to be a part of that battle in some small way from time to time, trying to convince lawmakers that the arguments on the part of the NJ Catholic Conference, claiming to be protecting the privacy of birthmothers, was wholly bogus, feigning to uphold a confidentiality that was never in fact promised. The overwhelming support of the bill on the part of the NJ Legislature, no doubt forced a reluctant Governor Christie to compromise – he had vetoed a similar bill a few years back. One might wonder about the governor’s conversion: Did he have a genuine change of heart? Had he become less susceptible to the bogus arguments of the NJ Catholic Conference? Did the fact that his sister is herself adopted open his eyes to the inherent injustice of sealed records regarding adoption practice?

“Secrecy is everywhere the soul of bureaucracy,” Simone Weil once wrote. “It is the condition of all privilege and of all oppression.” Those agents of church and state who obstruct the mother-child relationship by insisting on an enforced secrecy, not only deny the right of the adopted to their natal identity but dishonor, with veiled yet flippant disdain, the mothers who gave them birth.

Dorothy Day’s cause for canonization will depend on a miracle or two being confirmed to the Church’s satisfaction. But the underlying reason to make her a saint – the fact that she lived a life of heroic virtue is quite obvious and beyond dispute. Those promoting her cause will no doubt cite that heroic virtue as it pertained to her commitment to the poor and to her unfailing adherence to The gospel values of justice and peace. Hopefully, though, her extraordinary courage and heroic virtue as a pregnant, unwed mother will not be overlooked or forgotten. On this Mother’s Day, Dorothy Day serves as a Powerful reminder that the beauty of motherhood—however it occurs—can indeed save the world.

FAMILY MASS

The next Family Mass will be celebrated on June 4th at 9:30am.

At the Baptism Ceremony parents are reminded that they are the first teachers of their children, teaching them in all things especially their faith. One of the best ways to do this is to attend Mass together as a family. At Sacred Heart each month we have two special Masses for families. We celebrate Family Mass and Children’s Liturgy of the Word (CLOW). At both liturgies the children’s readings are used. Our Parish Children’s Choir, performs at Family Mass. All children are welcome to join.

Choir practice is held on the Thursday before the Family Mass at 3:30pm in the school. For information, please call Mrs. Lyons, Director of Religious Education at 718-631-1307.

Family Masses will resume in the fall.

CHILDRENS’ LITURGY OF THE WORD

Our next CLOW Mass will be held on May 21st at 9:30am.

“Sometimes, moreover, if the place itself and the nature of the community permit, it will be appropriate to celebrate the Liturgy of the Word, including a homily, with the children in a separate, but not too distant room. Then, before the Eucharistic Liturgy begins, the children are led to the place where the adults have meanwhile celebrated their own liturgy of the word.”

What is CLOW? During mass, after the opening prayer, children Pre-K through 6th grade, are invited to go to the church hall to hear the readings of the day proclaimed and explained in age appropriate language. The children rejoin their families during the preparation of the gifts at the offertory. Younger children are often accompanied by their parents. If you have any questions regarding CLOW, please call Sr. Kathleen Masterson at 718– 224-5695. The last CLOW mass for the school year will be held on June 11, 2017.
