CBHISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE
1986-1991 1992-1996 1997- 2002
Experimentation
• Rolled out the first UUCP based network in Malaysia among Universities
• Used dialup telephone lines (PSTN), packet switch network (X.25) and analogue leased lines
• Primarily for research and education
• The 15th country in the world to managed its own TLD (.MY)
Expansion Commercialization
• First international satellite leased circuit (64 kbps) installed in 1992
• Upgraded to T1 (1.5 Mbps) in 1994.
• Expanded to major towns in the whole of Malaysia
• Got the first ISP licence• Introduced 4-digit short
code for PSTN
• Installed the first T3 line in conjunction with INET97
• Government grants 6 more Tier 1 ISP License

CB Industry Perspective There are currently 6 Main Tier 1 based ISP All except one are Telecommunication Service
Provider. They are TMNet, TIMENET, CELCOM, MAXIS, DIGI
and JARING; Almost all Service Providers are exploring IPv6 to
varying degrees. JARING, MAXIS, CELCOM and NTT MSC is actively
participating and undertaking trials. To date JARING and NTT MSC has been allocated
IPv6 Production IP Address and can provide IPv6 Services

CB Research Perspective
Malaysia has more then 20 Government Funded Universities and Research Institute Undertaking some form of ICT R&D
Four Centers which are actively spearheading R&D Activities in IPv6 Research are Science University of Malaysia based in Penang, University Putra Malaysia in KL, Multimedia University in Cyber Jaya and University of Malaya in Kuala Lumpur.
MIMOS R&D focuses on Technology Assimilation and Deployment issues.
The Science University of Malaysia (USM) leads several IPv6 Project in Network Monitoring and etc and under the auspicious sponsorship of APAN-MY.

CB Concluding Remarks The growth potential of Internet Penetration in
Malaysia is growing Internet Technology and its corresponding application
will run our lives - we need to embrace it Malaysia is embracing IPv6 and is still an infant in
Global IPv6 Community We need to create greater awareness and promote
the development of applications using IPv6 as a platform of choice
We hope to achieve this by organizing and hosting a IPv6 Forum in Malaysia in Q3/Q4
