Country-specific
»Google also measure per-country›US: 25.08%–Large native deployments on cable and mobile
›Germany: 21.89%›France: 8.65%›Brazil: 7.38%› Ireland: 4.19%›UK: 2.44%

Content is there
»Akamai»CloudFlare»Facebook›~100% IPv6 internally
»Google (inc YouTube)»Netflix› Including Janet’s on-net servers
»Not to mention the next two speakers.23/03/2016

Increasingly, eyeballs are there (even in the UK)
»Sky›92% of customer base target for first half of this year–CPE is too old, or non-Sky, or other problems for
remaining 8%›~1.5Tbps IPv6 traffic
»BT›Rollout this year on HomeHub 5

How does Janet do?
»APNIC stats: 36.99% of hosts IPv6 capable!› I don’t get it, because…
»Akamai: 2.7% (89th in the world by volume)› Indiana University is 88th
»World IPv6 Launch: 3.94% (54th in the world by volume)
»Our own measurements?›~1.5% of traffic on external border

How can you join the fun?
» Get some addresses› [email protected]› https://www.ja.net/forms/obtaining-ip-addresses-application/
» Ask for them to be routed› Can tunnel them as an interim measure (but prefer not to, tunnels are evil)
» Experiment with some firewalling » Deploy on a test network» Browse the web
› Some websites will show the address you’re connecting from– E.g. http://www.ripe.net/
» Whilst you’re doing the above› Think of an addressing plan
– May be based on IPv4 plan– May be different – site/building aggregation?

The fun never stops…
» Configure some services› DNS; SMTP; HTTP› Before adding an IPv6 address record into the DNS, make sure all services on the box
are IPv6-enabled» Mandate IPv6 in tender documents
› Do not pay extra for IPv6 licenses!» Look at what others have done
› Previous Networkshop presentations» Be aware of some of the gotchas
› E.g. Router Advertisement spoofing» Roll out to edge networks» More of this in the IPv6 technical guide other presentations
› Jisc’s/Janet’s documentation due an overhaul› Janet training
