John A. Logan College was created by public mandate in September, 1967. It began its first academic year in September, 1968, with 330 students enrolled. Administratively, it operated from a store-front facility in Herrin, Illinois, using various rented community facilities as classrooms.

In 1969, the College acquired and occupied its permanent campus, a 161-acre tract fronting Highway 13 just west of Carterville, Illinois. A bond referendum was passed the same year to help finance the construction of the first phase of a permanent building, which was subsequently constructed and occupied in 1973.

In 1981, the College passed a $6 million bond referendum to provide 60,000 square feet of new and renovated facilities, including 3 new buildings, to replace 8 interim buildings on the campus. In 1991, the College dedicated an additional 100,000 square feet of new and remodeled facilities as part of an $8.5 million project funded principally by the Illinois Capital Development Board. In 1995, the College passed a $16 million bond referendum to provide 108,000 new square feet in 6 buildings. This project was also funded principally by the Illinois Capital Development Board. The legislature approved an additional $8.4 million in construction monies in 1999; construction is underway on a Community Health Education Complex and Workforce Development Center.

The College was first accredited in 1972 by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.Nathan A. Ivey was the institution’s first president, serving from1968 to 1973, followed by Thomas Deem, 1973-74.

Robert E. Tarvin was president until 1982, and Harold R. O’Neil served from 1982 to 1989. Dr. Ray Hancock served from 1989-2000. Dr. Robert L. Mees is the current president.

John A. The College’s Carterville facilities now include 169 acres, with extension centers in Du Quoin and West Frankfort. The College operates as a comprehensive community college under the authority of the Illinois Community College Act. It is governed by a board of trustees whose members are elected by the citizens of the district.

Dr. tim Daugherty Vice-PresiDent For ADMinistrAtiVe serVices

Dr. Tim Daugherty, Vice-President for Administration, is the senior administrator for intercollegiate athletics at John A. Logan College. He holds both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Eastern Illinois University and a Ph.D. in Higher Education Administration from Southern Illinois University. He joined the College in June 2008 after spending the past 24 years at Southeastern Illinois College where he was also served as the senior administrator for intercollegiate athletics.

In addition to athletics, he oversees the College’s offices of Admissions, Assessment, Financial Aid, Placement, Transfer, Student Success Center, Community Relations, Continuing Education, and the Center for Business and Industry. A native of Herrin, the 1974 graduate of Herrin High School is a member of the Tiger Hall of Fame in both basketball and football.

“John A. Logan College has always been an example of excellence in the classroom and on the playing field,” Daugherty said. “My primary concern is that our student athletes and all students have opportunities to succeed and be competitive in both academics and athletics.”

Jerry Halstead AtHletic Director In May 2001, long-time Volunteer baseball coach Jerry Halstead became the first new athletic

director at John A. Logan College in 21 years, replacing John Sala, who retired after serving in that capacity since 1980.

A native of Carterville, Halstead attended Southern Illinois University Carbondale and graduated in 1982 with a bachelor’s degree in physical education. While attending SIU, Halstead pitched for the Saluki baseball team for three years, helping win Missouri Valley Conference championships and participating in the NCAA Tournament.

In the fall of 1982, he began his career at Logan as the assistant baseball coach. He took over as head baseball coach after one season and also served as the assistant men’s basketball coach for three years.

Halstead has built the baseball program into one of the top programs in the country. The Volunteers annually rank among the elite in community college baseball. They won the Great Rivers Athletic Conference title in 2001, 2002, and 2004. They also won Region 24 championships in 2002, 2004, and 2006. In 2002 the Vols went on to finish seventh at the NJCAA World Series.

During the 1990s, Logan posted four straight national top-ten finishes and earned four conference titles. Fourteen former Volunteers are currently playing professional baseball. Halstead has produced 10 NJCAA All-Americans and routinely leads the nation in players signing at four-year schools.

While his main focus has been on baseball throughout most of his career, Halstead became Logan’s coordinator of athletics in the fall of 1995. In that position, he dealt with all aspects of the Athletic Department and is now in charge of all seven college sports (baseball, softball, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, men’s golf, women’s golf, and volleyball).

Halstead and his wife, Kathy, reside in Carterville. They have two sons, Jason and Aaron, and one daughter, Jennifer.

Marty Hawkins HeAD WoMen’s BAsketBAll coAcH

Marty Hawkins is his 19th season with the women’s basketball program at John A. Logan College, and 15th as head coach. In 2000-2001, he led the Lady Vols to a Final 8 finish at the NJCAA National Tournament and in 2010-2011, the Lady Vols placed in the Final 16 at nationals. Before coming to Logan, he coached one season at Morton Community College and 14 at Loyola-Chicago.

A Chicago native and 1974 DePaul University graduate, he got his start in collegiate athletics first as an equipment manager, and then as sports information director at DePaul. During his tenure at DePaul, he worked in publications, statistics, and radio-TV production for the nationally ranked Blue Demons men’s squad. In 1978, he moved to Loyola University to assume the same responsibilities.

In 1979, Hawkins took on the task of building the women’s basketball program while continuing in sports information. He left the administrative post in 1981 to devote his energy to coaching basketball.

Hawkins then steered the program in its move from AWIA Division II to NCAA Division I. During his tenure at Loyola, the Lady Ramblers won 227 games and three league championships. His teams had four 20-win seasons and victories over Division I powers like Kansas, Notre Dame, Wisconsin, and Illinois. He was named conference Coach of the Year three times and had a graduation rate of over 90 percent.

In 14 seasons as head coach at Logan, Hawkins’ record is 256-172. He has 486 career wins as a head coach. He has a bachelor’s degree (with honors) and a master’s degree in economics from DePaul.

Amanda Buldtman-shelbyAssistAnt WoMen’s BAsketBAll coAcH

Amanda Buldtman-Shelby begins her sixth year as the assistant coach for the John A. Logan College Lady Vols.

Born and raised in Metropolis, Illinois, she graduated from Massac County High School in 1998. She attended Southern Illinois University Edwardsville where she played basketball for four years. During her tenure with the Cougars, her team qualified twice for the Division II NCAA Tournament. She graduated from SIUE in 2002 with a bachelor’s degree in biological sciences.

In 2006, Buldtman-Shelby completed with honors a Master of Science degree in education with a specialization in sports studies at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. While working on that degree, she did an internship with Logan’s women’s basketball program where she served as a volunteer assistant coach.

#2 Jessica HirscH5’5” gUArD - FresHMAn Du Quoin Hs, Du Quoin, ilJessica came to JALC after a decorated basketball career at nearby Du Quoin High School. She was named her team’s MVP all four years of high school and earned all-conference honors each year. She was selected all-south and all-state as a junior and senior. She scored 1,424 points in her career and is the school’s all-time leading scorer. She also participated in the Lions All-Star game and the IBCA All-Star game. Jessica was an Illinois State Scholar. She received the Wendy’s Heisman Award, the DAR Award, and graduated as the salutatorian of her class.

#4 andrea Kesler 5’6” gUArD - FresHMAn carterville Hs carterville, ilAndrea Kesler prepped at Carterville High School, playing basketball for Coach Todd Rogers. She averaged six points and seven rebounds per game as senior and was twice selected to the all-tournament team at the Carterville Winter Classic. She also played softball in high school.

#5 aneta sloma5’4” gUArD - FresHMAnlivingston central Hs, livingston, kY Aneta joined the Lady Vols after a successful basketball career at Central High School in Livingston, Ky., for Coach Jim Larson. She was named all-district all four years of school and received all-region honors as a sophomore, junior, and senior. She scored 20 points and dished out six assists per tilt as a senior, and her team won the district championship. She also competed in track and field. An honor student, she graduated as the salutatorian of her class.

#10 Breann denny5’4” gUArD - FresHMAnWarren central Hs, indianapolis, in BreAnn joined the Lady Vols after playing high school basketball at Warren Central in Indianapolis for Coach Michael Brooks. Her team won sectional crowns her sophomore and junior years and a conference title her senior year. She averaged over 12 points per game as a senior and was named all-county.

#11 mystri Jodie 5’6” gUArD - FresHMAnsanta Fe indian schoolcrownpoint, nM Mystri came to Logan from Santa Fe Indian School in Crownpoint, N.M., where she was a four-sport athlete, participating in basketball, volleyball, cross country, and track. She was chosen a Navajo Times All-Star in basketball as a junior and senior. She earned first team all-district honors her junior year and was a 2A/3A North All-Star her senior year. Playing point guard, she averaged over seven points and two assists per game as a senior and her team won the district title and finished runner-up at the state tournament.

#12 lauren deiss5’6” gUArD - soPHoMoreillini central Hs, Mason city, il Lauren transferred to JALC from Danville Area Community College. She attended Illini Central High School in Mason City where she had a standout basketball career. She received all-conference honors each year of high school and was selected her team’s MVP three times. She placed second in the ISHA 3-Point Shootout as a junior and qualified again for the contest as a senior. She averaged 14 points, 6.7 rebounds, and 2.8 assists per game her senior year and is her school’s all-time scoring leader in girls basketball with 1,321 points. She also played volleyball and was on the honor roll.

#14 autumn miller5’7” gUArD - soPHoMoresacred Heart Academy, louisville, kY Autumn transferred to JALC from Seward County Community College in Kansas where she started 17 of 29 games last year, averaging 6.8 points and 2.8 assists per outing. She averaged 14 points, seven assists, seven steals, and six rebounds per game as a senior at Sacred Heart Academy in Louisville and was a McDonald’s All-American nominee, as well as an all-region, all-district, and all-state performer. She was an Academic All-American and was named to the Academic All-State first team all four years of high school.

#15 Kyra navarrete5’11” ForWArD - soPHoMoreFenwick Hs, chicago, ilKyra is the only returning player for JALC this season. As a freshman with the Lady Vols last year, she scored 16 points and pulled down 7.1 rebounds per game. She earned all-conference and all-region honors. Before coming to Logan, Kyra played basketball for Coach Dave Power at Fenwick High School in Chicago where she was an all-conference performer. As a senior, she averaged 16 points and eight rebounds per game.

#20 Briya WilBorn5’6” gUArD - FresHMAn st. Joseph Hs, countryside, il Briya came to JALC from St. Joseph High School in Countryside where she played basketball for Coach Jim Maley. Her team won three regional championships in a row and she was voted team MVP two times. A guard, she led her team in scoring as a junior and senior, averaging 15 points, four steals, three rebounds, and three assists per game her senior year. She was named all-conference twice and was an all-state performer as a senior.

#22 asHley yateman6’0” ForWArD - FresHMAnArsenal tech Hs, indianapolis, in Before coming to JALC, Ashley played high school basketball for Coach Stephanie Keller at Arsenal Tech High School in Indianapolis. She captained her team her senior year, averaging eight rebounds, six points, four assists, and three steals per game. She received the Hustler Award and was selected all-city and all-conference. She also competed in track and golf and made the honor roll.

As a senior, she averaged eight points, six rebounds, three assists, and one block and was voted Most Improved and Best Defensive Player. Her team won conference, regional, and sectional championships. She was on the honor roll all four years of high school.

GREaT RIVERS aTHLETIC COnFEREnCEIn August 1982, competition began in a newly organized league of community colleges in Illinois. Charter members of

the league included the following: John A. Logan College, Kaskaskia College, Southeastern Illinois College, Rend Lake College and Wabash Valley College. All the institutions were located near the two great rivers in Illinois, the Mississippi and Ohio Rivers—thus the name Great Rivers Athletic Conference was adopted.

In 1985, current members Olney Central College and Southwestern Illinois College joined the GRAC. In 1988, Lincoln Trail became a GRAC member. Lake Land College joined the conference in 2005.
