sChOOl niCkname

“Bronchos” was the nickname selected for Central Oklahoma in 1922 by Mrs. C.W. Wantland, wife of long-time UCO football coach C.W. Wantland. The name was chosen from a number of suggestions for the name of UCO’s football team and became the nickname for all athletic teams at the school.

Mrs. Wantland was made an honorary member of the Letterman’s Club as a result of selecting the nickname, becoming the first woman admitted to that organization.

Bronze and blue were chosen as Central Oklahoma’s school colors early in the fall of 1895 by school president Edmund Dandridge Murdaugh. The first public display of the bronze and blue was in Guthrie when a student represented UCO in the first oratorical contest ever held in Oklahoma.

Hamilton Field House Records

Central Oklahoma plays all its home basketball games inside Hamilton Field House, which opened its doors on Jan. 8, 1965 when the UCO men’s team downed intrastate rival Northeastern State 64-52.

UCO’s women started playing in the 3,000-seat facili-ty in 1980 and are 261-176 (.597) in 35 years, including a 82-44 mark (.651) over the past nine seasons under head coach Guy Hardaker.

Hamilton Field House was re-named from Broncho Field House on May 1, 1993 in honor of long-time UCO

coach and athletic director Dale Hamilton, who helped design the building in the 1960s.

The facility underwent extensive renovation before the 2001-02 season, with new chairback seats installed around the floor level.

Hamilton Field House is also the home facility for the volleyball and wrestling teams and numerous other events, including the university’s graduation ceremo-nies, are also held in the building.

Head CoachGuy Hardaker

In his 11th year as Central Oklahoma’s head coach is Guy Harda-ker, who has turned the Bronchos into a perennial NCAA Division II national tournament contender.

A member of the UCO Athletic Hall of Fame, Hardaker took over the helm in 2006 after a highly-successful stint as boys high school basketball coach and is 183-112 with the Bronchos.

He's led UCO to its only four Division II national tournament ap-pearances and the Bronchos won 20-plus games a school-record four consecutive seasons from 2007-11. Guy guided Central to a top-two finish in the Lone Star Conference North Division the last five years (two firsts, three seconds) in the league. Hardaker has coached 13 all-conference players, including two Player of the Year selections.

UCO finished a surprising 15-13 and was LSC North Division runner-up in Hardaker's first year in 2006-07 and then really taking off the next season.

The Bronchos gained a share of their first-ever LSC North Division title in 2007-08 and made it to the LSC Tournament finals for the first time since 1993 while also earning their first-ever Division II national tournament berth.

UCO pulled out a thrilling overtime victory in the first round of the South Central Regional before losing to eventual champion Washburn to finish 24-8, the second-most wins in school history.

The Bronchos did even better in 2008-09, winning the outright LSC North Division crown and making it back to the LSC Tournament finals in again qualifying for the national tournament as Hardaker was named LSC North Coach of the Year.

UCO picked up two hard-earned wins at the South Central Re-gional to make the Sweet 16 for the first time ever before falling in the finals to host West Texas A&M in finishing a best-ever 27-6.

Hardaker and the Bronchos came back with a 22-8 campaign in 2009-10 finishing runner-up in the LSC North and making a third straight national tournament appearance before falling in the first round.

Guy's best coaching performance came in 2010-11 when a team featuring just one senior and missing six players who suffered sea-son-ending injuries used a stirring late-season run to make the second Sweet 16 appearance in school history.

The Bronchos were once again LSC North Division runners-up, pulled off an overtime upset in making the LSC Tournament finals before losing a one-point heartbreaker there and then knocked off two higher seeds in advancing to the South Central Regional finals. UCO fell short there to end a 22-10 campaign.

Central competed as a Division II independent in 2011-12 while making the transition from the LSC to the Mid-America Intercolle-giate Athletics Association and went 16-10 despite playing one of the toughest schedules in school history. The Bronchos got off to a solid start in their first season in the rugged MIAA in 2012-13 before a rash of key injuries led to a 9-17 finish. UCO ended up 12-16 the follow-ing year, upsetting Lindenwood on the road in the first round of the MIAA Post-season Tournament.

Hardaker got the Bronchos back to their winning ways in 2014-15 with a 17-13 finish while again making it to the quarterfinals of the MIAA Tournament before losing a close game. UCO had its best season since 2009-10 last year, going 19-11 with a best-ever fifth-place finish in the rugged MIAA and another quarterfinal appearance in the league tournament.

Guy started his coaching career at Edmond Memorial High School, serving as head girls golf coach and assistant boys basketball coach from 1987-93. He led the Lady Bulldogs to two state championships and one runner-up finish in golf while helping the boys basketball team to three Class 6A state tournament appearances, capped by a

coached the boys basketball and golf programs there until coming to UCO. He led the basketball squad to four straight regional titles and the Wolves qualified for the state tournament his last three years at the helm, winning 67 games in that span.

Hardaker led Santa Fe to the Class 6A state title in 2004-05 and the Wolves were ranked as high as 11th in the nation in 2005-06 before fall-ing in the state tournament semifinals. He finished with a 173-148 record at SFHS.

Guy was a three-year baseball star at UCO from 1982-84, leading the Bronchos to a 101-49 record in that span before leaving following his junior year after getting drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies.

A two-time All-District 9 and NAIA All-Area pick, Hardaker was taken in the 10th round by the Phillies in 1983 and spent two years play-ing in the minor leagues, reaching as high as the Triple A level. He was inducted into the UCO Athletic Hall of Fame in 2006.

Guy, who received both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from UCO, is married (Tammy) and has two children (Chance and Tate).

In her third year as Central Oklahoma’s full-time assistant coach is Heather Davis, a former player for the Bronchos.

David spent two seasons as a graduate assistant coach for UCO before taking over a full-time role in the summer of 2014. She’s helped lead the Bronchos to a 36-24 record the past two seasons, including a 19-11 campaign in 2015-16 that ranked as the best since 2009-10.

Heather started her college career at Division I Missouri-Kansas City and played two years there, averaging 4.9 points a game as a freshman and 2.2 points as a sophomore while earning Academic All-Summit League recognition.

She came to UCO in 2010-11 and averaged 4.5 points and 2.7 rebounds a contest while starting in six of 32 games to help lead the Bronchos to a 22-10 record and Sweet 16 berth in the national tournament. Heather started throughout the 2011-12 season, averaging 10.4 points, 4.0 rebounds and 2.2 assists a game as a senior while making 42 3-pointers.

Davis was a prep standout at Muskogee High School, earning All-District and All-State honors as a senior while also garnering All-Conference accolades in soccer.

Heather earned her bachelor’s degree in criminal justice in May 2012 and her master’s in criminal justice management and administration in May 2014.

Serving as Central Oklahoma’s graduate assistant coach in 2016-17 is Julia Mason. Mason finished a standout, four-year career with the Bronchos last season. After an illustrious high school career at Fairview, Mason went to Central Arkansas. She redshirted one

season and played in 27 games the next before transferring to UCO.From 2013-2016, Mason would go on to play in 87 games for the Bronchos, starting in 82 of them.

Mason averaged 11.3 points per game as a sophomore, 10.4 as a junior, and 10.7 per contest as a senior, when she led the Bronchos in scoring in six gmaes. She also helped the Bronchos reach the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association quarterfinals in three consecutive seasons.

Mason’s two younger sisters (Olivia and Sadie) both play at UCO.

Central Oklahoma begins the 2016-17 season with high expectations as Guy Hardaker enters his 11th season in charge of the Bronchos.

Hardaker returns eight players from last year’s team that won 16 games. He has three seniors with tons of playing experience, and a fourth senior who is ready to return from missing last year with an inury.

Hayley Bryan, Marley Anderson, Olivia Mason and Ashley Stephens will lead the Bronchos into this sea-son. Bryan returns in 16-17 after missing last year with a hip injury.

Bryan has always been a physical presence inside for the Bronchos, and with UCO having more size this year, Bryan can stretch the floor and create matchup problems for opposing teams.

Anderson is another veteran for Hardaker. The 5-5 guard has played in 86 games already for the Bronchos and is capable of being a scoring threat as well as a dangerous playmaker with the ball.

Olivia Mason looks to continue her solid play in her senior season. The 6-foot forward is the leading return-ing scorer for the Bronchos. Olivia Mason scored 8.3 points per game last year, and can also create matchup problems with her ability to score from multiple spots on the floor.

Stephens is another big presence for Hardaker, and he believes that if she is healthy this year, she can have a big year.

Stephens is a former transfer who has battled the in-jury bug and played sparingly last year, 12 games, and had a similar sophomore season two years ago, but the 6-foot-3 post player is a career .500 shooter.

Hardaker’s junior class is a small mix of big talent. Megan Womack returns after making her way into the starting lineup as a sophomore, a spot she wasn’t will-ing to relinquish.

Womack averaged four points and four rebounds per game last season and is looking to improve on those numbers this year.

The other two juniors on the roster, Jesheon Coo-per and Melinda Murillo, are both transfers who could have an immediate impact.

Cooper comes from Shawnee Community College in Illinois, and the 6-foot-5 post player is ready to work for Central Oklahoma.

Hardaker said Cooper gives the Bronchos an op-

portunity to compete with anyone because her inside presence changes his entire gameplan.

Murillo, a 5-5 point guard, is a workhorse. A transfer from NEO, Murillo loves practice, cheers louder than anyone for her teammates and has a nice game to back up her vocal leadership.

Blake Blessington, Madison Lee, and Sadie Mason are the three sophomores on the roster. Blessington played in all 30 games, by design, last year for the Bronchos.

Hardaker said Blessington’s development from year one to year two is noticable, and he believes it will con-tinue this season.

Madison Lee also picked up a ton of valuable min-utes last year as a freshman. Lee played in 25 games, and like Blessington, is ready to improve her numbers in year two.

Sadie Mason is working hard to come back from a torn ACL. She started a pair games as a freshman, playing in 14 before the injury. Hardaker said Sadie Mason has the ability to be a premier player if her re-covery goes well.

The freshman class, called one of the best recruiting classes under Hardaker, is loaded with talent.

First there’s Taylor O’Dell, who redshirted last year. Hardaker said her improvement in practice a season ago was big.

Shatoya Bryson, Nautica Butler, Gabrielle Johnson, Summer Jones, and Ireon Smith round out the fresh-man class.

PresidentDr. Don Betz

Now in his sixth year as Central Oklahoma’s president is Dr. Don Betz, who became the school’s 20th president in August 2011 after having previously served as UCO’s Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs from 1999-2005.

President Betz developed several initiatives and programs that helped transform Central into one of the leading met-ropolitan universities in the nation during his first stint at the school and he’s been the driving force in making UCO a destination of choice in higher education since his return to campus.

President Betz has enjoyed a distinguished career in higher education that spans more than 40 years, developing a rep-utation for teaching and encouraging students, leadership development and diplomacy through his international activ-ities, most notably with the United Nations and its affiliated non-government organizations.

Prior to returning to UCO, he served as president of Northeastern State, a post he held for three years. He also served as Chancellor at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls from 2005 until his appointment at NSU and as Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs at Palmer College (Iowa) from 1994-1999.

In the 23 years prior, he fulfilled various capacities at NSU, including the Vice President of Uni-versity Relations and Professor of Political Science. While at NSU, he also was the Executive Direc-tor of the Educational Foundation, Assistant to the President, Dean of Continuing Education and Special Programs, Director of the Sequoyah Institute/Center for Tribal Studies, the founder and advisor of the university’s President’s Leadership Class and its Model United Nations program.

From 1982 through 2003, President Betz worked for and with the United Nations on Middle East issues. He founded and chaired the International Coordinating Committee on the Question of Palestine (ICCP), a UN-affiliated non-governmental organization (NGO) network pursuing peace in the Middle East based on UN resolutions.

A frequent writer and speaker, Dr. Betz has addressed international, educational, motivational topics, and has worked with newspapers, radio and television. His life-long interest in global issues and his passion for promoting cross-cultural understanding has led him to more than 80 countries.

While president at NSU, he served as the chair of the Northeast Oklahoma Public Facility Au-thority, board member for BancFirst in Tahlequah, the Tahlequah Area Chamber of Commerce, Creative Oklahoma, Inc., and chair of the Regional University System of Oklahoma Council of Presidents. He is a member of the Oklahoma Academy, Leadership Oklahoma, Universities and Colleges President’s Climate Commitment, International Association of University Presidents and has served as Chairman of AASCU’s International Education Committee.

President Betz received his B.A. in Political Science and Philosophy from the University of San Francisco and his M.A. and Ph.D. in International Studies from the Graduate School of Internation-al Studies at the University of Denver. Athletic Director, Joe Muller

Now in his ninth year as athletic director at Central Oklahoma is Joe Muller, who has helped return the Bronchos to national prominence in NCAA Division II.

UCO teams have captured 13 conference championships and had 13 top-10 national finishes during Muller’s tenure, with softball winning the school’s first-ever women’s national championship in 2013.

Seventy-eight student-athletes have earned All-America honors over the past eight years and the Bronchos have placed in the top 50 among 350 Division II institutions five times in the Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup yearly stand- ings, including a 32nd-place finish in 2015-16.

The athletic department’s fund-raising efforts have also increased sig-nificantly under Joe’s guidance. He secured the largest gift in program history in the fall of 2015 with a $10 million donation that ranks among the highest ever in the NCAA Division II ranks, continues to grow Stampede Club membership and also introduced a corporate sales initiative that has generated record revenues for the program in just five years.

Academically, UCO’s student-athletes are performing at all-time high levels. For the past eight years, the overall grade point average of student-athletes has surpassed that of the general student population and to demonstrate that academics is a priority, the athletic department now hosts an annual Academic Awards Banquet recognizing the achievements of student-athletes.

A native of Stillwater, Joe earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Oklahoma State and got his start in athletic administration at OSU when he served as director of athletic marketing and promo-tions from 1985-90.

Muller was involved in the television industry for more than a decade before returning to OSU in 2002 as associate athletic director, serving in that capacity until going to Purdue in ‘06.

He was senior associate athletic director for external relations for the Boilermakers for two years before becoming just the seventh athletic director in Central’s rich athletic history in July of 2008.

Joe is married (Julie) and has three sons (Jaxon, Brandon and Matthew).

Assistant Athletic Director, Gunnar Poff

Gunnar Poff is in his third year as Central Oklahoma’s assistant athletic for operations after serving the previous four years as coordinator of ticket sales for the Bronchos.

Poff took over his new role in May 2014 and spearheads UCO’s game-day operations in addition to a host of other duties.

Central Oklahoma is in its fifth year as a member of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Associ-ation.

The MIAA, a 14-member conference of NCAA Di-vision II institutions in Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska and Oklahoma, was first organized in 1912 as the Mis-souri Intercollegiate Athletic Association.

Over the past 100 years, the MIAA has gained the reputation of being one of the top NCAA Division II conferences in the nation. MIAA schools have won 15 NCAA team championships and, since 1964, over 160 individual national titles.

The MIAA currently conducts championships in eight sports for men and nine for women.

For the men, champions are crowned in football, cross country, basketball, indoor and outdoor track & field, baseball, tennis and golf.

The women compete for titles in volleyball, cross country, soccer, basketball, indoor and outdoor track & field, softball, golf and tennis.

The MIAA turned a new page on July 1, 1992, when the NCAA Division II conference changed its name from the Missouri Intercollegiate Athletic Association to the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Associa-tion.

The decision to make the change originated in 1989, when Pittsburg State and Washburn became the first schools outside the state of Missouri to gain member-ship in the MIAA.

The conference was first organized in 1912 with 14 member institutions. Of those original members, Cen-tral Missouri, Truman State and Northwest Missouri State still remain a part of the MIAA.

The first change in membership came in 1924, when the MIAA reorganized to include only the five regional

Missouri state colleges: Central Missouri, Truman (at the time known as Northeast Missouri State), North-west Missouri, Southeast Missouri State and South-west Missouri State (now Missouri State).

Over the next 56 years, three schools joined the membership: Missouri School of Mines (later Missou-ri-Rolla) in 1935, Lincoln in 1970 and the Missouri-St. Louis in 1980.

Ken Jones became the first full-time commissioner of the MIAA in 1981 and would be in the position for 16 years, retiring in 1997. Ralph McFillen succeeded Jones, serving 10 years before his retirement in 2007.

Jim Johnson succeeded McFillen in July of that year and served as commissioner until September of 2010, when Dr. Bob Boerigter took over.

Southwest Baptist brought membership back to eight schools in 1986, before the major expansion of the conference in 1989. Pittsburg State, Washburn, Missouri Southern and Missouri Western began com-petition in the 1989-90 season.

Southeast Missouri State left the MIAA following the 1990-91 season and was replaced by Emporia State in the 1991-92 season.

Missouri-St. Louis departed the MIAA in 1996, Mis-souri-Rolla left in 2005 and Lincoln forfeited its mem-bership in 1999. Fort Hays State joined the MIAA in 2006, Nebraska-Omaha entered the league in 2008 and Lincoln re-joined the conference in 2010.

UCO, Lindenwood, Nebraska-Kearney and North-eastern State all become league members with the start of the 2012-13 academic year.

Nebraska-Omaha left the league in 2011 and Truman State did the same in 2013, which leaves the confer-ence with 14 schools. Lincoln and SBU are associate members who compete in women’s basketball.
