PURPOSE AND CONTENTSOF THIS MAP
T h e desig nations sh ow n on th is motor v eh icle use map(MV U M) w ere made by th e responsible official pursuant to36 CFR 212.51; are effectiv e as of th e date on th e frontcov er of th is MV U M; and will remain in effect untilsuperseded by next year's MV U M.
It is th e responsibility of th e user to acquire th e currentMV U M.T h is MV U M sh ow s th e National Forest Systemroads, National Forest System trails, and th e areas onNational Forest System lands in th e North Kaibab Rang erDistrict th at are desig nated for motor v eh icle use pursuantto 36 CFR 212.51. T h is MV U M also identifies th e v eh icleclasses allow ed on each route and in each area; and anyseasonal restrictions th at apply on th ose routes and inth ose areas.Desig nation of a road, trail, or area for motor v eh icle useby a particular class of v eh icle under 36 CFR 212.51sh ould not be interpreted as encourag ing or inviting use orimplying th at th e road, trail, or area is passable, activ elymaintained, or safe for trav el. Motor v eh icle desig nationsinclude parking along desig nated routes and at facilitiesassociated with desig nated routes w h en it is safe to do soand w h en not causing damag e to National Forest Systemresources. Seasonal w eath er conditions and naturalev ents may render desig nated roads and trails impassablefor extended periods. Desig nated areas may containdang erous or impassable terrain. Many desig nated roadsand trails may be passable only by h ig h -clearancev eh icles or four-w h eel-driv e v eh icles. Maintenance ofdesig nated roads and trails will depend on av ailableresources, and many may receiv e little maintenance.T h is motor v eh icle use map identifies th ose roads, trails,and areas desig nated for th e motor v eh icle use under 36CFR 212.51 for th e purpose of enforcing th e proh ibition at36 CFR 261.13. T h is is a limited purpose. T h e oth erpublic roads are sh ow n for information and navig ationpurposes only and are not subject to desig nation under th eForest Serv ice trav el manag ement reg ulation.T h ese desig nations apply only to National Forest Systemroads, National Forest System trails, and areas onNational Forest System lands.

Game Retrieval: Elk and Bison OnlyT h e limited use of a motor v eh icle is allow ed off of th edesig nated road system to retriev e a leg ally h unted andtag g ed elk or bison during elk or bison h unting seasons asdesig nated by th e Arizona Game and Fish Department,and for 24 h ours following th e end of each season.W h en a big g ame animal h as been leg ally taken, th eindiv idual w h o leg ally took th e animal may driv e or bedriv en to th e dow ned animal. U nder no circumstance maya second v eh icle be used to retriev e th e animal. T h ev eh icle sh ould be of sufficient capacity th at only one trip isnecessary. T h e v eh icle may only be driv en one mile from adesig nated open road.H unters are required to use th e most direct and leastg round disturbing route in and out of th e area toaccomplish th e retriev al. Motorized g ame retriev al is notpermitted in trav el restricted areas, and may not crossriparian areas, streams or w etland areas except ath ardened crossing s or crossing s with existing culv erts.Motorized g ame retriev al is not permitted more th an onemile from an open road or w h en conditions are such th attrav el w ould increase th e likelih ood of neg ativ e resourceimpacts (i.e. muddy, w et soils with potential for compactionand rutting ).

OPERATORRESPONSIBILITIES
O perating a motor v eh icle on National Forest Systemroads, National Forest System trails, and in areas onNational Forest System lands carries a g reaterresponsibility th an operating th at v eh icle in a city or oth erdev eloped setting . Not only must you know and follow allapplicable traffic law s, you need to sh ow concern for th eenv ironment as w ell as oth er forest users. T h e misuse ofmotor v eh icles can lead to th e temporary or permanentclosure of any desig nated road, trail, or area. As a motorv eh icle operator, you are also subject to State traffic law,including State requirements for licensing , reg istration, andoperation of th e v eh icle in question.Motor v eh icle use, especially off-h ig h w ay v eh icle use,inv olv es inh erent risks th at may cause property damag e,serious injury, and possibly death to participants. Driv ecautiously and anticipate roug h surfaces and features,such as snow, mud, v eg etation, and w ater crossing scommon to remote driv ing conditions. By your participation,you v oluntarily assume full responsibility for th esedamag es, risks, and dang ers. T ake care at all times toprotect yourself and th ose under your responsibility.Much of th e Kaibab National Forest is remote. Medicalassistance may not be readily av ailable. Cellularteleph ones do not w ork in many areas of th e KaibabNational Forest.
