Introduction

The Amazon Fund had a succesful year. On 23 May the foundation was established by Fred Opdam, Erik Jongejan and Menno Staarink. The notary act was made by notary Smits in Thorn, the Netherlands. Since 9 June 2008 the foun- dation is registered at the Chamber of Commerce Limburg under the number 14103019.

In our first year the foundation was strengthened with the new board members Paul Torrence and John Smith. AF did its first public presentations. During a useful visit to Bolivia an agreement for cooperation with the Bolivian organization ‘The Foundation for the Conservation of The Chiquitano Forest’ (FCBC) was signed. In the United States The sister organization Amazon Fund International was established in the United States.

ObjectiveThe objective of the Amazon Fund is ‘Conservation of Amazon Nature and Culture’. The mission of the Amazon Fund foundation is to work with indigenous people in support and development of initiatives committed to the conservation of nature and culture in the Amazon region.

HistoryThe foundation is a result of the desire to contribute to the conservation of the Amazon. The founders met each other thanks to the former successful foundation ‘Help Marc van Roosmalen” (2007), assisting the Brazilian primatologist of Dutch origin, when he found himself in jail, accused of “biopiracy”. of which Fred Opdam, Rob Kamphues and Wim Veen were board members and Erik Jongejan offered help.

Inleiding

Stichting Amazon Fund kan terugblikken op een succesvol jaar. 23 mei 2008 is de stichting opgericht door Fred Opdam, Erik Jongejan en Menno Staarink. De acte is uitgegeven door notaris Smits gevestigd in Thorn/Maasgouw. Sinds 09 juni 2008 staat de stichting ingeschreven bij de Kamer van Koophandel Limburg onder nummer 14103019.

Onze activiteiten hebben in korte periode vruchten afgeworpen. De stichting is versterkt met de twee nieuwe bestuursleden Paul Torrence en John Smith. Tijdens een nuttig bezoek aan Bolivia is een getekend voor een samenwerkingverband met de Boliviaanse stichting The Foundation for the Conservation of the Chiquitano Forest (FCBC). En in de Verenigde Staten is inmiddels een zuster- organisatie Amazon Fund International opgericht.

DoelHet doel van stichting Amazon Fund is ‘Behoud van Amazone Natuur en Cultuur’. De missie is om samen met de inheemse bewoners, organisaties en overheden initiatieven te ontwikkelen om natuur en cultuur in de Amazoneregio te behouden.

HistorieDe stichting is ontstaan vanuit de wens een bijdrage te willen leveren aan het behoud van de Amazone. De oprichters hebben elkaar gevonden dankzij de succesvolle stichting ‘Help Marc van Roosmalen’ (2007), ter ondersteuning van de Braziliaanse primatoloog van Nederlandse herkomst, toen hij in de gevangenis belande op beschuldiging van ‘Biopiraterij” waar Fred Opdam, Rob Kamphues en Wim Veen bestuursleden van waren, en Erik Jongejan zijn hulp aanbood.

First presentation

The first presentation of the Amazon Fund was 18 May in the Haque, before we were officially established.

AF was invited by the foundation ‘Streetchildren of Bolivia’. The cause was in mutual target country Bolivia and interest in conservation of Amazon Nature.

For an audience of about 30 people Fred Opdam and the Bolivian trainee Alfredo Olmedo presented the Amazon Fund.

In November the second local presentation was in Beegden the Netherlands, combined with a fleamarket of which the profits went to AF.

AF was uitgenodigd door de stichting ‘Kinderen van Bolivia’. De aanleiding was het gemeen-schappelijke doelland Bolivia en de interesse voor natuur- en cultuurbehoud in de Amazone.

Voor een publiek van ongeveer 30 mensen presenteerde Fred Opdam en de Boliviaanse stagiar Alfredo Olmedo het Amazon Fund.

In november was de tweede presentatie in Beegden. Gecombineerd met een rommelmarkt of waarvan de opbrengst naar AF ging.

Visit Bolivia

Why Bolivia? This is one of the poorest and most underdeveloped countries of South America. At the same time it is one of the most authentic Countries, still retaining nature and culture. The Amazon Fund wants to contribute preserving these natural and cultural treasures. The visit to Bolivia made by the Amazon Fund in July/August 2008 was a small adventure. Tra-versing this country, meeting its kind people and exploring projects provided important insights. Erik Jongejan and Fred Opdam returned with valuable results and positive feelings.

The first projects we researched were the establishment of a rehabilitation center for wild-life, combined with a field study / environmental education center. Both with the key objectives of creating awareness and improving attitude towards nature. These projects would enable the participation of schools, children, students, volunteers and experts from Bolivia and abroad. We looked into the possibilties for eco tourism and buying land. And were invited to see a project for potable water systems. The adventure began in Rurrenabaque.

Bezoek Bolivia

Waarom Bolivia. Dit is één van de armste en onontwikkelde landen van Zuid Amerika. Tegelijktijd is het een van de meest authentieke landen met nog veel waardevol natuurschoon en oude culturen. Amazon Fund will een bijdrage leveren aan het behoud hiervan. Het bezoek van AF aan Bolivia in july/august 2008 was een bescheiden avontuur. Reizend door dit land, het ontmoeten van haar aardige inwoners en het onderzoeken van de projecten gaven belangrijke inzichten. Erik Jongejan en Fred Opdam keerden met resultaat en goede gevoelens huiswaarts.

Het eerste project dat we onderzochten was de oprichting van een combinatie ‘rehabilitatiecentrum voor wilde dieren / milileueducatiecentrum’. Beiden met als kerndoel: Het creëren van bewustwording en een verbeterde houding ten opzichte van de natuur. Deze projecten zou deelname van scholen, kinderen, studenten, vrijwilligers en experts uit Bolivia en buitenland mogelijk maken. De mogelijkheden voor eco-toerisme en landaan-koop werden bekeken. En we werden uitgenodigd een drinkwater project voor te bezoeken. De reis begon in Rurrenabaque.

The Amazon Funds goal during its visit to the beautiful tourist town Rurrenabaque, located at the foothills the Andes, was meeting people and discovering partnerships and opportunities to establish our goals.

Talking to the people of Rurrenabaque convinsed the Amazon Fund that there is need for education and development. AF met the Bolivian lawyer Daniel Manzaneda who now is one of our advi-sors and possible future manager of the environ-mental education center in Rurrenabaque.

AF learned of the Bolivian wildlife refuge Refugio Jaguarete Rurre with which who we now plan to cooperate.

Amazon Fund’s doel van het bezoek aan dit mooie toeristische stadje Rurrenabaque, gelegen aan de uitlopers van de Andes, was mensen ontmoeten en mogelijkheden tot samenwerking en uitvoering van de projecten te onderzoeken.

Bewoners van Rurrenabaque overtuigde AF van de behoefte aan educatie en ontwikkeling. AF ontmoette Daniel Manzaneda, momenteel advi-seur en beschouwd als mogelijk toekomstig manager van het milieueducatie centrum in Rurrenabaque.

AF hoorde van het Boliviaanse rehabilitatie centrum Refugio Jaguate Rurre. Momenteel vinden de eerste stappen tot samenwerking plaats.

Haventje Rurrenabaque met daarachter San Buena Ventura Port of Rurrenabaque, behind San Buena Ventura

Alan Perry, an American guide and environmen-talist, invited us for a 4-day canoe trip on the Rio Beni. This provided a good opportunity to become informed about the need to implement potable water and sanitation systems in local communities. Marcelle Edward, advisor of AF and a Canadian aid worker who was based in Rurrenabaque for 3,5 years explained about the lack of and problems with potable water systems. About the diseases caused by a lack of hygiene and drinking contaminated drinking water. Estabilshing a potable water system and sanita-tion in the community San Luis Grande has now become one of AF’s projects.

Meetings with local experts gave insight in buying land, the risks and the special conditions for foreigners. Local tour agencies gave opportunities for future cooperation in developing eco tourism.

Alan Perry, een Amerikaanse gids en natuurlief-hebber nodigde ons uit voor een 4-daagse kanotocht op Rio Beni. Dit gaf de gelegenheid geinformeerd te worden over de behoefte aan drinkwatersystemen en sanitair in de gemeen-schappen. Marcelle Edwards, AF-adviseur en Canadees ontwikkelingswerkster was 3,5 jaar werkzaam in Rurrenabaque. Zij gaf uitleg over het gebrek aan en de problemen met drink- watersystemen. Over de ziektes veroorzaakt door het gebrek aan hygiene en het drinken van vervuild water. Het bouwen van een drinkwatersysteem en sanitair in de gemeenschap San Luis Grande in nu een van AF’s projecten geworden.

Ontmoetingen met locale deskundigen gaven in-zicht in landaankoop, de risico’s en speciale voor-waarden voor buitenlanders. Locale touroperators gaven perspectief voor toe-komstige ontwikkeling ecotoerisme

Santa Cruz

The economic Capital and most developed department of Bolivia. The goals of the visit were to develop relationships with people and organi-zations, create partnerships and determine the feasibility of establishing an environmental education center and a rehabilitation center. Also the opportunities for eco tourism where explored.

FCBCThe Foundation for the Conservation of the Chiquitano Forest (FCBC) and Amazon Fund (AF) became partners. FCBC is an established Bolivian NGO with expertise in conservation and environmental issues. Their office is run by a staff of 40 people. The first agreement is signed on 04-08-08 and we hope to cooperate in future environmental projects.

The first objective was to find an easily acces-sible location for the schools and universities of Santa Cruz, not a trivial task because of lack of nature near this fast growing city. At the moment AF orientates in joining an environmental model project in Concepcion.

De economische hoofdstad en meest ontwikkelde departement van Bolivia. De doelen van het bezoek waren: ontwikkelen van relaties met mensen en organisaties, samenwerkingsverbanden leggen en onderzoeken of vestiging van een milieueducatie-en rehabilitatiecentrum haalbaar is. Ook de mogelijkheden voor ecotoerisme werden onderzocht.

FCBCDe Stichting for Behoud van het Chiquitano Forest (FCBC) en Amazon Fund (AF) werden partners. FCBC is een gevestigde Boliviaanse NGO met expertise in natuurbehoud en milieu. Op hun kantoor in Santa Cruz werken 40 mensen. Het eerste samenwerkings verdrag is 04-08-08 getekend en we hopen samen te werken in toekomstige milieu projecten.

Het eerste doel was om een makkelijk toegangbare locatie voor de scholen en universiteiten van Sant Cruz. Dit is niet makkelijk door een gebrek aan natuur in deze snel groeiende stad. Momenteel oriëntereert AF een samenwerking met een milieu model project in Concepcion.

P.N. Noel Kempff / Piso Firme

The goals where: meeting people, seek for partnership, investigating the possibility forestablishing a wildlife rehab / fieldstudy centre and do research for eco tourism. Simbioses-Mensch und Natur e.V.In the remote community Piso Firme this German/Bolivian foundation build cabanas to become a study centre.This project is located in a buffer zone of P.N. Noel Kempff Mercado. AF concluded that the area is very interesting but to remote to establish a center.

Park National Noel Kempff MercadoThis wonderful Unesco Park has a lack of tourism and is becoming victim of illegal hunting and logging. Its remoteness is a blessing and problem. AF tries to improve eco tourism and established with Bolivian travel agencies.

In December we started to apply for a NCDO Repro grant to be used for AF-presentations in the Netherlands.

Het doel was: ontmoeten mensen, zoeken naar samenwerking, onderzoek haalbaarheid centrum voor rehabilitatie en milieueducatie. Ook de mogelijkheden voor ecotoerisme werden bekeken. Simbioses-Mensch und Natur e.V.In het afgelegen dorpje Piso Firme heeft deze Duits/Boliviaanse stichting cabanas gebouwd met het doel een veldstudiecentrum te worden. Dit project ligt in de bufferzone van P.N. Noel Kempff Mercado. AF concludeerde dat het gebied zeer interessant is, maar als centrum te afgelegen ligt.

Park National Noel Kempff MercadoDit fantastische Unesco Park lijdt onder een gebrek aan toerisme en wordt slachtoffer van illegale jacht en houtkap. Haar afgelegenheid is tegelijkertijd een zegen en probleem. In samenwerking met locale reisbureaus probeert AF het toerisme te verbeteren

In december is Amazon Fund begonnen met haar NCDO-Repro subsidie aanvraag voor presentaties en voorlichting in Nederland.

Prospects

In January 2009 the Dutch NCDO Repro grant gave the opportunity to present in Holland.

The Amazon Fund organized a succesful day in the Dutch Museum of Natural History Naturalis. An audience of 120 people witnessed the presentation of AF, a lecture of Bas Haring, Professor, entitled ‘Public understanding of science’, about the phenomenon of biodiversity. The event also included a presentation of Foundation Biodiversity and Education (BEE). An online interview with Professor Frans de Waal, Dutch psychologist, primatologist and ethologist, and an interactive discussionbetween a forum with representatives of ‘Foun-dation Tropical Forests’, ‘Friends of the Earth’ and El Instituto Boliviano de Investigación Forestal (IBIF) - WUR.

Amazon Fund InternationalAmazon Fund International was born in January 2009. A sister organization founded in the USA by AF board member Professor Paul Torrence.

Presentation France In June 2009 AF Board member Erik Jongejan gave a succesful presentation in France. The country where he lives after his retirement.

Visit BoliviaA visit in May/June to Bolivia resulted in a further development of the goals and has deepen Bolivian-Dutch relations further.

New peopleMore, mainly young people want to work with the Amazon Fund to achieve its goals. A good prospect, we think.

Voorruitzichten

In januari 2009 heeft AF door de toegekende NCDO Repro subsidie de gelegenheid presentaties en voorlichting te bieden in Nederland.

Het gaf Amazon Fund de gelegenheid een succesvolle dag in museum Naturalis te organiseren. Een publiek van ongeveer 120 mensen waren getuige van de presentatie van AF. Bezoek BoliviaEen bezoek aan Bolivia in mei / juni 2009 resulteerde in een verdere ontwikkeling van de doelen en heeft de Nederlands-Boliviaanse relaties verdiept.

Nieuwe mensenSteeds meer, vooral jonge mensen willen samen met Amazon Fund werken aan aan haar doelstel-lingen. Een goed vooruitzicht, lijkt ons.

Paul TorrenceEmeritus professor scheikunde en biochemie. 30 jaar afdelingshoofd US Nationale Instituut van Gezondheid. 8 jaar Northern Arizona University waarvan 3 als afdelingsvoorzitter. Publiceerde meer dan 200 artikelen en is auteur en eindredacteur van vier wetenschappelijke boeken over me-dische chemie en ontdekkingen van geneesmiddelen. Momenteel organisch landbouwer en betrok-ken bij restoratie bos en stroomgebieden: Projectleider bosproducten, oprichter AF international.
