Catholic Schools Week This week we celebrated all that Catholic schools offer our children. We thank each

parent, grandparent, parishioner, priest, and teacher who has supported Catholic

education for St. Barnabas students for the past 50 years.

As another Catholic Schools Week wraps up, I want to thank all of the parents who

made it a success:

Our School Commission members and students who acted as ambassadors during

Open House last Sunday.

The PTO Hospitality chairs Amy Heidelberger and Sarah Nelson who organized

treats for the teachers all week beginning on Monday morning.

The room parents and volunteers who covered classrooms during the teachers’

luncheon on Friday.

The parents who prepared and served the teachers’ luncheon.

The parents who transported our choir and musicians to STS. Peter and Paul Ca-

thedral for the Catholic Schools Week Mass on Tuesday.

The parents who prayed for us on Pray-a-thon Day, cheered with us at the 8th

grade-faculty volleyball game, and wished us well all week.

A Day in the Life of St. Barnabas School A huge “Thank you” goes to parent and School Commission member, Deana Haworth,

for her work in making our new video possible. She arranged for the film crew and

make-up artist, spent the day here during the filming, and spent many hours oversee-

ing the editing process.

The result, “A Day in the Life of St. Barnabas School” deserves an Oscar. Please enjoy

watching it and please pass it along to friends and family to let them know about our

great school. “Don’t keep your light under a bushel basket” (Matt. 5:15) really applies

here!

Catholic Schools Week Supplement from The Criterion

A child’s song captures essence of Catholic education for teacher by John Shaughnessey

Kim Higdon’s smile reflects the joy she gets from working with her students to praise God through music. As a music teacher at St. Barnabas School in Indianapolis, Kim Higdon believes that “one of the greatest joys in life is singing praises to God through hymns and liturgical music.” Higdon has also come to understand that her greatest re-wards as a teacher often come unexpectedly. “It is so important for me to connect with my students one on one,” she says. “My first year at St. Barnabas, I had a first grader named Helen who rarely spoke to anyone. When it was her turn, she would sing alone in the tiniest voice imaginable, with barely a whisper coming from her lips. She would sing along in class looking down at her lap with her lips barely moving. “Helen remained quite shy until around third grade. One day when I asked for a volunteer to sing, I caught Helen look-ing at me eagerly. Even though she hadn’t raised her hand, I asked her if she would like to give it a try. She nodded and stood up and faced her class. “As I began to play my guitar softly, out came this sweet, pitch-perfect, gentle voice singing, “When I feel afraid, think I’ve lost my way, still You’re there, right beside me.’ The class exploded into applause as Helen smiled shyly and took her seat. In subsequent years, Helen volunteered to sing psalm verses at Mass, sang a duet in her eighth grade Christ-mas program, and performed a major solo in the Spring Musical. “Rewards are there every day.” †

Congratulations to our Spellbowl Team Spellers Chris Azar, Aiden Galt, Andrew Galt, Ella McCalip, Kathe-rine Evans, Ethan Anttonen, Jack Rittenhosue, and Alex Moll placed 2nd among 15 teams from other Catholic schools on Wednesday evening. Perfect spellers were Ethan Anttonen and Ella McCalip. Near perfect spellers missing only one word were Aiden Galt, Alex Moll, and Jack Rittenhouse. Jack used is experience of his early years in the south to spell Okeechobee Lake correctly! Thank you to coaches, Casey Kloss, Terri Collins, and Evan Cutshaw

Congratulations to 8th grader, Liam Wanner!

Liam's artwork was submitted to The Central and Southern Indiana Scholastic Art Awards. The awards focus on out-standing students’ artwork from around the nation and the work is judged by a panel of regional artists and art profes-sionals. Liam’s colored pencil drawing, "Worry", received a Gold Key Award, which demonstrated the highest level of achievement in originality, personal voice, and technical skill. It is the highest regional award for this competi-tion and Gold Key artwork is forwarded to New York City for National Adjudication. Central and Southern Indiana students received over 2,500 submissions to The Scholastic Art Awards this year. Of these submis-sions, only 206 Gold Keys for artwork were awarded. This is a remarkable achievement and a huge honor. Liam's artwork will be on display at the Clowes Memori-al Hall on the campus of Butler University, Indianapolis from Wednesday, February 11, through Sunday March 8, 2015. An awards ceromony for all Silver and Gold Key awarded artwork will take place on Sunday, March 8, 2015 at 2:00 pm.

Science Exhibition

Students in grades 5 and 7 will display their science projects in the gym at our

annual Science Exhibition on Tuesday, February 3rd. Parents are invited to visit

the exhibition from 10:30-12:15. Thanks to the parents of the 5th and 7th grad-

ers for supporting our young scientists.

St. Barnabas Choir at Saints Peter and Paul Cathedral

One highlight of Catholic Schools Week was the invi-

tation for our liturgical choir to sing at the Archdioce-

san Catholic Schools Week Mass at Sts. Peter and

Paul Cathedral. Archbishop Tobin very much appreci-

ated our students talents and complimented them on

their contribution to the Mass. Thank you to all of

the parents who drove students and to our teachers,

Mrs. Higdon, Mrs. Miller, and Mrs. Scheer for leading

our students.

DONATIONS are being accepted for HANDICAP ACCESSIBLE DOOR

Several parishioners have expressed a need for a handicap accessible door at the entrance to the Narthex. Bids have been secured and the cost will be $4,736 to create an automatic door opening for both the exterior door and the door leading into the Narthex. Please prayerfully consider helping us reach this goal and making it an easier transition for our parishioners to navigate into our vestibule. Please make checks payable to Saint Barnabas and include in the memo line "handicap accessible doors". You may place in the collection basket in an envelope specifically identified with this request or also mail to the parish Attention: Business Office.

Sports Registration Policy Change

This notification is going out to all St. Barnabas families who have children that participate in CYO sports. There has

been a change made to the registration policy for all CYO sports at St. Barnabas. In the past, families were able to reg-

ister their children for a particular sport through the Orgsonline.com system and render payment for the fee associat-

ed with that particular sport AFTER the registration process had been completed.

Effective immediately, registrations will NOT be complete (registrations will be placed in “PENDING” status) until FULL

payment is made in the Orgsonline.com system. Payment will be made via electronic check withdrawal from your

bank or via check/cash payment to Laura Bridgewater in the school office; unless a payment arrangement has been

approved by the Athletic Director, Tim Griffin. This will include the fee for the current registration as well as ALL out-

standing balances that have incurred from unpaid fees for prior registrations.

Once the FULL balance has been paid or a payment plan has been established, the registration will move from

“PENDING” status to “ACTIVE” status. (Please note, your child will not be able to participate in any evaluations or

practices and will not be placed on a team until the registration is moved to the “ACTIVE” status).

We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause, but it is imperative that families stay current with their sports reg-

istration fees in order for us to continue to provide uniforms, equipment, and fees at a discounted rate. We hope you

understand the change in policy and if you have any questions, please contact Tim Griffin at [email protected] or

317-509-6878.

Thank you for your support,
