the Snacks that will Save the World

Page 2: ItsyBits

Why does the world need saving?

We’re running out of space: The raising of livestock (farm animals raised for use or profit) consumes two-thirds of the planet's farmland

our planet is full of gas: raising livestock is a major source of greenhouse gases

the un says so: the United Nation's Food and Agriculture Organization recommendations that the western world eat more insects

we’re in an economic crisis, and the insects come cheap: Insects are metabolically much more efficient (than livestock), which makes them far cheaper to feed and raise

they’re not so gassy: Farming edible insects would produce 10 times less methane and 100 times less nitrous oxide than the large mammals we currently farm

We can’t get mad cow disease from them: they're so biologically different from humans, they are less subject to contagious disease

they’re healthy: Hamburger: 18 percent protein and 18 percent fat - Cooked grasshopper: 60 percent protein with 6 percent fat

(and how will eating insects help?)

so why aren’t we eating them already?

“it’s a matter of mindset.”Marcel Dicke, entomologist
