What’s Exciting About This Course

If you had asked yourself, how is that possible to stay in contact with your friends and family

using the different social media apps, chat, share videos, pictures, order an Uber, get to the

concert and use a QR code to start a banking, credit card transaction, on your phone or on a booth at the airport, well, all this technology advances that make your life easier, will land

eventually on a network, with IP addresses interconnected to other networks. That is the

subject of this class from the basic principles to the point where you can explain yourself the

path from the “click” or “tap” you just did on Instagram all the way to the picture file your friend or followers are receiving. This is Cisco ITN – Introduction to Networks ITCC1414.

Welcome to ITCC 1414

Welcome to the ITCC 1414 Introduction to Networks or ITN for short. I am very excited to

have you as students in the course, and to share my experience and knowledge with you.

Outside our class meetings, please communicate with me through the Cisco NetAcad, (www.netacad.com) not the Canvas from hccs site for the course. That communication can

be through the Discussion topics posted on NetAcad, or privately through the NetAcad email

tool. Announcements will appear in the “Updates from OP” Discussion topic.

Please be sure to follow the syllabus as a reference for any important dates, to plan

for the semester, and to review HCC policies. The best way to really discuss issues

is in person. I’m available during the week to answer your questions. Please visit me or email me on NetAcad whenever you have a question.

Prerequisites and/or Co-Requisites

ITCC 1414 requires college-level reading and writing skills. Research indicates that

you are most likely to succeed if you have already taken and passed ENGL 1301.

The minimum requirements for enrollment in ITCC 1414 include placement in college-level reading (or take INRW 0420 or ESOL 0360 as a co-requisite) and some

computer configuration knowledge from CompTIA A+, but not mandatory. If you

had enrolled in this course having satisfied these prerequisites, you have a higher chance of success than students who have not done so. Please carefully read and

consider the repeater policy in the HCCS Student Handbook.

your chapter exams, Midterm, SICs (Skill Integration Challenges) and Final exam.

Supplementary Instruction

Supplemental Instruction is an academic enrichment and support program that uses peer-

assisted study sessions to improve student retention and success in historically difficult

courses. Peer Support is provided by students who have already succeeded in completion of the specified course, and who earned a grade of A or B. Find details at

Course Overview The course covers fundamentals of Networking Technology including the Network Operating System or IOS, Protocols, Network Access, Ethernet, Network Layer, IP addressing, subnetting, transport and application. There is a good amount of Unix like (Cisco IOS) and related material involved in the labs.

Program/Discipline Requirements

Instructors will use a syllabus that satisfies Curriculum UNET requirements and

improve on-going assessment of student-centered learning and teaching.

SCANS and/or Core Curriculum Requirements

Use basic Cisco IOS commands to configure devices (Unix like).

Use terminal emulation to access Cisco devices.

Calculate sub nets, IP addresses and subnet masks on devices. Change computer and Cisco devices configuration.

Set up remote access to devices using secure and unsecure methods.

Set up basic security on devices. Manage IOS software licenses.

Course Student Learning Outcomes (CSLOs)

Upon completion of ITCC 1414, the student will be able to:

1. Explain how a LAN works, based on the TCP/IP model as well as on the OSI

model.

2. Configure a basic settings for a Cisco Router and a Switch using IOS CLI

3. Identify, use and explain IPv4 and IPv6.

4. Design and set up different networks topologies base on a subnetting scheme.

Student Learning Objectives:

1. Explain network technologies and how devices access local and remote

networks.

2. Describe router hardware.

3. Explain how switching operates in a small to medium-sized business network.

4. Design an IPv4 and IPv6 addressing scheme to provide network connectivity for a small to medium-sized business network.

5. Configure initial settings on a network device using Cisco command-line interface (CLI).

6. Implement basic network connectivity between devices.

Student Success Expect to spend at least tree (3 – Yes three, TRES) as many hours per week outside of

classroom as you do in class studying the course content. Additional time will be required for

the assignments. The assignments provided will help you practice the concepts discussed in class lectures and on your hands-on skills. Successful completion of this course requires a

combination of the following:

Reading and practicing on Cisco NetAcad. As you read PLEASE take notes.

Attending class in person and/or online. There will be at least one face to face tutoring. Completing assignments

Participating in class activities

There is no short cut for success in ITN; it requires reading and studying the material and more importantly, completing the assignments, for which you will require to devote important

time after class.

Assignments, Exams, and Activities

Packet tracers skills assessments

Exams are individual efforts during the scheduled class meetings. Other activities such as labs and projects are team efforts.

Lab Assignments and Packet tracer simulator

Each module within Cisco NetAcad course will contain detailed assignment instructions and a quiz and a chapter exam, so that students will understand the specific requirements for

that module.

Discussions (-> Specific directions for Spring 2020, given second session)

Discussion topics on NetAcad are used for online communication for the class, and to handle questions about content. Participation in the discussions counts in the “participation” part

of the grading rubric. At least once a week starting a meaningful topic or replying / adding

value to an existing one. (Does not count “Yep, I agreed with you”. )

Chapter Exams

Chapter Exams are short assessments administered online (NetAcad) each

consisting of a set of multiple-choice or true/false questions, covering material in

one module. I will know if you search the answers over the Internet. So please refrain to use that shortcut. Just read, take notes and just take the chapter exam.

Midterm Exam

The midterm exam is scheduled, (Chapter 6 PT Skills Assessment) If this exam is missed, it will be graded with zero. There is also a SIC 11.6.1 that is part of the Mid Term and it will

be assigned / submitted online.

Final Exam

The final exam is scheduled for: May 15th, 2020, 6:00 – 8:50 pm West Loop 153 and May

11th, 2020, 6:00 – 8:50 pm Brays Oaks

Attendance Procedures

1. On-campus students may be withdrawn if the student is absent for more than 12.5% of class. See the Student Handbook for more information.

2. Online students may be withdrawn before the Official Day of Record if they have not

logged in or shown sufficient participation. See the Online Student Handbook for more

information. 3. As an Online section or On-Campus section of this course, you must make satisfactory

progress in this course. Students may be withdrawn if the student misses turning in

assignments (Labs, quizzes, or discussions) that total to more than 12.5% of the course work prior to the Final Exam.

4. Contact your instructor if you are having a problem.

5. If you decide to quit participating in the course before the Last Day for Administrative/Student Withdrawals, you may withdraw yourself. Talk to you

instructor for details.

6. After the withdrawal date deadline, there is no withdrawal and no grade of “W”

possible. 7. You may receive an FX as your grade due to lack of participation if you have not

withdrawn yourself. If you receive an FX, you may or may not have to return the
