Synthetic dyes (colors) were originally made from coal tar oil. Today, they’re made from petroleum (crude oil), just like gasoline.
Petroleum is also used to make artificial flavorings, preservatives, plastic, medicine, pesticides and fragrances.
Widely used in foods and drugs For decades allergists have reported serious
physical effects in some patients, including asthma and hives
Has been shown to trigger behavior problems in children. (Lancet, Mar. 9, 1985; Journal of Pediatrics, Nov. 1994)
Shown to cause cancerous thyroid tumors in animals
Prohibited from being used in the wax coating on cheese, but allowed in foods and beverages
Can also be used as a pesticide: sprayed on manure piles to kill fly eggs (maggots). (Source: US Environmental
Protection Agency)
Suspected of causing cancerous tumors in test animals. As a result, Canada banned it.
Considered safe in the U.S. (Source: US Environmental Protection Agency)
Approved despite controversy surrounding their safety. (Source: Center for Science in the Public Interest)
Not permitted in foods
Allowed in drugs and cosmetics
Can also be used as an herbicide to kill marijuana plants
HERBICIDE
Dyes that are banned from foods are allowed to be used in medicines.
If a dye is too dangerous to be used in food, why does the FDA allow it to be added to medicines for children?
Artificial Imitation Synthetic Vanillin
Artificial vanilla flavor
Most are petroleum-based
Used to be made from the waste product of pulp mills Vanillin bottling plants were often built next to pulp mills for convenience
Some people think they’re allergic to chocolate because they get a headache or other unpleasant effect when they eat it. It could be the fake vanilla, not the chocolate.
Cancer Tumors Cell death Enlarged liver Decreased sleep Learning deficits Increased aggression

Some parents have found that their child’s autistic symptoms have responded to the Feingold Program.
These additives, as well as natural salicylates, appear to “use up” an essential enzyme that is needed in both the brain and the digestive system, and interfere with the body’s ability to create more of it.
Other families have needed to go further and remove dairy or wheat, or all gluten and casein.
There are many ways to treat children with autism, and the Feingold Association helps families locate additional resources but we believe that getting rid of unwanted additives is the easiest first step.
