Built as a summer residence for one of Bavaria's electors, Schloss Nymphenburg (Nymph's Palace) is a treat

for those who enjoy viewing the opulence of the lifestyles of the aristocracy.

    About the Palace

Located just west of Munich, the Nymphenburg Palace was commissioned in 1664 by

Elector Ferdinand Maria, to celebrate the birth of his son, Maximilian Emanuel. The

elector was to make this his summer residence and would live here with his consort andthe mother of his child, Henriette Adelaide of Savoy.

The architect chosen for the palace was Agostino Barelli, who designed the central section

of the palace to resemble an Italian villa, much to the delight of Henriette.

However, the palace didn't maintain its original state for long. As a matter of fact, a total

of five Wittelsbach rulers had their hand in changing or adding to the palace. Max

Emanuel, the young man for whom the castle was built, was the first to make additions,

in the year 1700. He added galleries and pavilions, extending the sides of the

Nymphenburg Palace. For this job, he chose architects Enrico Zuccali and Antonio

    Viscardi.

    Ceiling painting, Steinerner Saal

Soon stables were added to the south and an orangerie to the north.

Further additions continued, especially throughout the 18th century. The facade was

extended to an impressive width of 600m (1968 ft). A circle of ornate Baroque mansions,

known as the Schlossrondell, was erected under Emperor Charles VII. The enormous

Grand Hall or Steinerner Saal, was added during the reign of Elector Maximilian III

Joseph and includes ornate Rococo elements fashioned by Flemish architect Franois

Cuvillis. Johann Baptist Zimmermann created the magnificent ceiling frescoes.

Cuvillis also designed Amalienburg, a splendid hunting lodge.

    Nymphenburg Canal

In the second half of the 18th century the garden was transformed in a landscape

garden, but the original axis of the garden, which centers around a long canal, was

retained. At the end of the 900m long canal is a cascade adorned with four large

    sculptures.

At the other end of the palace an even longer (2km) canal leads as a grand entranceway

    towards the palace.

    basilica di san pietro

Colosseo and Foro RomanoRoman Colosseum is the legendary monument located next to Capitol Hill. It was build by Titus, Vespasian and Domitian between

70 and 82 A.D. This huge amphitheater could hold over 50 000 spectators. There were eighty entrances for visitors. Throughout

the ages it played a role of theatre, gladiators arena and sports stadium. Even such events like sea battles took place here. Each

level of seats was meant for different classes of people - from emperors, through patricians to ordinary citizens. At present,

Colosseum is partly ruined as it used to be treated as the stone warehouse by Romans in the XVIth century. Nevertheless it

remains to be one of the major attractions of Rome and Italy. Foro Romano is a historic heart of ancient Roman Empire and is

situated on the Palatine hill. On Foro Romano you will find ruins of many urban buildings and temples like: Temple of Castor and

Pollux, Temple of Jupiter, Temple of Romulus, Temple of Saturn, Temple of Vesta, Temple of Venus and Roma, Basilica Aemilia,Basilica Julia, Arch of Septimius Severus, Arch of Titus, Rostra, Curia, Basilica of Maxentius and Constantine as well as

The piazza di Spagna is one of the most popular meeting places in Rome. It is also one of the most visuallypleasing squares. The combination of a monumental staircase - the famous Spanish Steps, an obelisk and abeautiful church draws photographers to the square.

    Spanish Steps

Spanish StepsThe Piazza di Spagna or Spanish Square is connected to a French church (Trinit deiMonti) on top of the hill via a long staircase, known as the Scalinata della Trinit deiMonti or Spanish Steps. The idea of connecting the church with the square beloworiginates from the 17th century, when the French also planned a statue of King LouisXIV of France at the top of the staircase.

Papal opposition caused the plans to be shelved until 1723, when the monumentalstaircase was built without the statue. Pope Innocent XIII appointed the Italian architectFrancisco de Sanctis. He presented a design that satisfied both the French and thepapacy. The elegant staircase consists of 137 steps over twelve different flights.

    View from Spanish Steps

It has an irregular albeit symmetric structure. It is especially beautiful in May, when it isdecorated with azaleas. The steps are usually very crowded; it attracts tourists as well aslocals who use it as a gathering place.

Piazza di SpagnaAt the bottom of the Spanish Steps is the Piazza di Spagna or Spanish square. The long, triangular square is named after the Spanish Embassy to the Holy See. In the 17thcentury, the area around the embassy was even considered Spanish territory.

    The Mouth of Truth.

La Bocca della Verit (inEnglish, "the Mouth of Truth") is an image, carved from Pavonazzetto marble, of a man-like face, located in the

porticoof the church ofSanta Maria in CosmedininRome,Italy. Thesculptureis thought to be part of a 1st century ancient Roman

fountain, or perhaps amanhole cover, portraying one of several possible pagangods,[1]

probablyOceanus. Most Romans believe that the

'Bocca' represents the ancient god of the riverTiber.

The most famous characteristic of the Mouth, however, is its role as a lie detector. Starting from the Middle Ages, it was believed that if one

told a lie with one's hand in the mouth of the sculpture, it would be bitten off. The piece was placed in theporticoof theSanta Maria in

Cosmedinin the 17th century. This church is also home to the supposed relics of Saint Valentine
