• Wireless at Emory– Current Status of Wireless on Campus– Current Implementation Issues– New Wireless LAN Switch Implementation– Advantage of New Wireless LAN Switch– Technical Issues with New Technology– Impact of New Technology on Customers



Wireless Status

• Deployed Sites– Approximately 20 different locations– Including 3 Outdoor sites– Over 175 APs Operational and in use

• Usage– Consistently more than 200 users each day

• Mixture of Colubris and Aruba APs



Current Implementation Issues

• Roaming– Roaming from one building to another breaks VPN

• No Guest Access• WPA• Backend Network Issues (VLANs, etc.)• Management Issues• Scalability



Wireless LAN Switch Technology

• Ease of Deployment– No VLANs required to get virtual networks– No specific AP configuration required

• Ease of Management– RF management– Client Management– AP Management

Discussion: New Technology Technical Issues

• Migrating from old to new technologies– Prove the new technology before older

technology is replaced

• Service implementation changes– VPN Login looks the same for users– WPA will be available with Aruba installs– Working on a Guest Access strategy



Discussion: New Technology Customer Impact

• Changes in Client Login Setup and Procedures– VPN login is exactly the same– WPA & Guest Access will be available

• Will need to be documented

• Challenges– Mixture of Old and New Technology
