The higher education system in Turkey is supervised by the Council of Higher Education (CoHE). The CoHE is an autonomous institution which is responsible for the planning, coordination and governance of the higher education system in accordance with the Constitution and the higher education laws.

Higher education institutions in Turkey can be classified as follows: Universities, Institutes of High Technology, Post Secondary Vocational Schools, Other Higher Education Institutions (Military and Police Academies). There are two types of universities in Turkey, namely State and Non-profit Foundation Universities.

All of these higher education institutions are recognized and accredited by the CoHE. There are 183 universities in Turkey, 71 of which are Non-Profit Foundation Institutions (March 2017). These universities host more than 6 million students. A list of universities and their contact information is available at www.yok.gov.tr

Turkish universities offer: Associate’s degree programs (short cycle): These

programs take 2 years. Vocational high school graduates can qualify for associate’s degree programs without the central placement test.

Higher Education in Turkey

Bachelor’s degree programs (first cycle): These programs generally take 4 years. Specialized programs such as medicine (6 years) may be longer.

Master’s degree programs (second cycle): A master’s program with thesis generally take 2 years; a master’s program without thesis take 1.5 years.

Doctoral degree program (third cycle): A doctoral program after a master’s degree take 8 semesters, an integrated doctoral program after a bachelor’s degree take 10 semesters. A completion of coursework, proficiency exam, dissertation proposal and succesful oral defense of the dissertation are the requisite steps in doctoral programs.

Post-Graduate programs: Duration depends on program and university.

The National Qualifications Framework for Higher Education in Turkey, developed with reference to the Qualifications Framework of the European Higher Education Area was adopted by the CoHE in 2010.

Turkey has actively participated in the Bologna Process, which define the European Higher Education Area (EHEA). The Bologna Process has been an important opportunity for reconstruction and internationalization of Turkish higher education system.

Studying in IstanbulIstanbul has a wonderful locationconnecting Europe and Asiaby the spectacular Bosphorus

Throughout history, this unique location made Istanbul

politically, commercially and culturally a very important

city. Once the capital of the Byzantine and Ottoman

empires, Istanbul has grand historic monuments, a

commercial culture that is still very much alive and a

cosmopolitan culture that welcomes all.

Today it is not the capital of the modern Turkish Republic

but it is the most populous city of Turkey with 17

million inhabitants. Istanbul is still the heart of Turkey’s

commercial, financial, artistic and cultural activities. It is

a touristic destination which attracts around 12 million

tourists a year, with its historic palaces and mosques,

wonderful museums, art galleries, festivals, and world-

class shopping and entertainment.

Istanbul is also an education hub. 58 universities are currently operating in Istanbul hosting around 600.000 students. Living and studying in Istanbul is a great experience with so many places to see and so many things to do.

Istanbul Aydın University (IAU)

Istanbul Aydın University (IAU) is a non-profit and state-

recognized Foundation university offering bachelor’s,

graduate and doctorate programs.

IAU now offers a wide range of academic programs in order to

meet the demands of the labormarket in the global economy.

The latest additions to the university are the Health Sciences

and Dentistry programs. The university recently opened its

Faculty of Medicine.

The future plans of the university include emphasizing quality assurance and accreditation procedures and further developing its graduate programs.

Education and learning are the main impetus for a society’s development. Universities are valuable

institutions with ties to various segments of society, focused on solving the problems of society,

developing and spreading technology, while embodying the principles of academic freedom.

Although the number of universities in Turkey has increased recently, there are still over a million young

people every year who are unable to access higher education due to insufficient number of seats at

universities.

With this concern in mind, Istanbul Aydın University has worked relentlessly since its establishment

in 2003 to reach its goals and has created the roadmap with its academicians, administrators and

Students’ Top ChoiceIAU is the most-preferred university by Turkish

students in the central placement test for

and product designers who give priority to

the environment, can integrate computer

The Faculty of Arts and Sciences was founded

to conduct contemporary education, training

and research activities in line with the local,

national and international needs. We value

international interaction and use of information

technologies in our teaching.

Dentistry degree requires 5 years of study.

Besides basic medicine and dentistry courses,

students take pre-clinic professional courses

in order to improve their skills during the first 2

years of their professionals training. Starting on

their junior year, students do 3 years of clinic

work. Completing the treatment of our patients

in the highly technological multidisciplinary

clinics, our students graduate adopting the

The School of Foreign Languages offers

two bachelor’s programs, Translation and

Interpreting in English and in Russian. It

also supports teaching general, business,

professional, special/ academic English given in

all associate and bachelor’s programs.

The School of Foreign Languages is responsible

for the English Preparatory Program, which

is a year-long, intensive English program for

students who will study at English-medium

departments at IAU. The English Preparatory

Program is conducted in two semesters as

four tracks. Students can use multimedia

rooms, classroom smart boards, Audio-Visual

Language labs and CALL (Computer Aided

Language Learning) courses. The curriculum of

the English Preparatory Program is prepared in

parallel to TOEFL-IBT exam which will be taken

by every student at the end of the year as the

final test. In the program, A, B, and C levels of

English are taught. If they wish, students can

complete their one or two last tracks abroad.

TTPMO coordinates technology transfer

trade and marketing for entrepreneurs in pre-

incubation.

First step is creating a Mentor Group in order

to support all entrepreneurs in all period as

to develop and commercialize enterprises

by organizing enterprise and Business Plan

competitions for entrepreneurs.

İstanbul Aydın University is committed to

internationalization of its student body

and academic programs. IAU Directorate

of International Relations is responsible

for managing and developing international

activities. Various offices under the directorate

run student exchange programs such as

Erasmus+ and study abroad programs,

international summer and winter programs,

full-time student recruitment activities,

international student support services, and

Turkish language courses for international

students.

Istanbul Aydin University offers its students the

privilege to be part of an international academic

community that spans across 27 European

countries and 17 non-European countries,

comprising of 256 possible destination

universities for Erasmus studies/traineeship

mobility through its bilateral agreements.

In the 2016-2017 academic year, we were

preferred by 77 European students and we have

sent 90 IAU students to European countries for

an Erasmus experience that changed their lives.

Delightful Istanbul

International Winter School

This program takes place during the winter

break which is usually the last two weeks of

January and hosts international students from

all over the World. The program, similar to the

Delightful Istanbul Summer School Program in

content, takes place in Istanbul.

IAU Short-Term Study Programs office conducts “Short-Term Study Programs” throughout the academic year. These programs combine credit-bearing courses and cultural activities. Subjects that would attract international students are carefully selected and the courses are designed to include fieldwork or lab hours, alongside the lectures.

International Student Union (ISU)

International Students and Staff Affairs Office (ISSA)

The International Student Union (ISU) at

Istanbul Aydin University is a voluntary

association of international students.

ISU presidency is elected annualy by the

votes of international students. ISU is

committed to tirelessly advocating on behalf

of international students and to enhance

their entire student experience on campus.

ISU equally aims at promoting the cultural

diversity that international students bring

to IAU and international understanding

and cultural awareness of the University

community. One of our aims is to organize

social programs to form a supportive and fun

network of international students and all the

internationally-minded students and staff at

IAU.


ISSA presents orientation programs for newly

arriving international students providing

important information and skills they need in

order to study succesfully during their stay in

Turkey. ISSA offers one-on-one counselling and

group activities to help international students

through their adaptation period and supports

them with their educational, legal and social

issues. In addition, it coordinates activities with

the International Student Union to implement

their projects and to organize extra-curricular

activities such as field trips.

AydınTÖMERIAU Turkish Language Teaching, Application

and Research Centre (Aydın TÖMER) has been

established for international students who

would like to learn Turkish through effective

teaching methods in a modern learning

environment. The curriculum is designed

in accordance with the European Common

Language Criteria. The academic staff in the

center has extensive experience in learner-

centered education. Students who graduate

from Aydın TÖMER will be able to continue their

university studies in Turkish easily with the

level of Turkish proficiency acquired from the

center.

Aydın TÖMER, also organizes workshops and

conferences, prepares publications to develop

effective teaching methods and materials for

teaching Turkish to foreigners.


International Student Recruitment Office International Student Recruitment Office is

responsible for responsible for developing and

implementing the University’s strategy for

marketing and recruitment of international

students. The Office provides information,

advice and guidance on studying at IAU

to prospective students, educational

representatives and schools overseas. The

Office is responsible for:

Overseas visits: Organizing regular visits to

different countries to maintain and develop

contacts and to promote the University

at education fairs and via institutional

visits, presentations and working with the

University’s partners.

Representatives/agents: Managing

relations with a network of overseas student

recruitment agents.

Direct Consultancy: Providing information

for prospective international students on

our website and publishing on a regular basis

the results of market research on student

recruitment activities.

Social Life onCampus Istanbul Aydın University offers its students

many extra-curricular activities such as “About

Life” conferences organized weekly which

host important figures of politics, business and

the bureaucracy; trips to historical and cultural

destinations; theatre, cinema, literature and

dance performances; IT days to encourage the

young talent and share the new technologies in

this field.

There are numerous student clubs some of which are:

Young Entrepreneurs Club, Environment and Sustainable Campus Club, Social Responsibility Club, Original Design Club, Motor Sports Club, Spanish Language Club, Cinema Club, Music Club, Dance Club, Photography Club, International Students Club.

IAU has many sports teams which compete

successfully at national and international

tournaments. IAU Karate Teams has won the

European Universities Karate Championship

in Portugal-Coimbra 2017. IAU Tenis Women

is team has won the national league

championship 2017 at the same time they

won bronze medal European universities

championship in Spain- Madrid. and also

Voleyballl women is team has won the national

league championship in 2017. In the 2016-2017

academic year, IAU sports teams won 16 Cups

and 8 Gold, 8 Silver, 7 Bronze Medals in total.

Radio AYDIN offers a fun learning experience

for Communications students who have

the chance to program their own shows.

Communications students also have their own

news agency and publications.

Campus Facilities

Istanbul Aydın University’s newly-built Information Center on Florya Campus occupies an area of 3.000 m2. It has a capacity of 728 seats and 50,000 volumes of shelf. The Center has 6 group study rooms and 13 personal study rooms. It is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

IAU Information Center’s collection covers national and international various resources like printed books, periodicals, reference materials, technical publications, theses and various multimedia resources. Also internet connection is available for researchers. It is possible to access e-books and e-journals via academic data bases such as Ebrary, JSTOR, WILEY.

Istanbul Aydın University offers social facilities

considering the needs of our students, academic

and administrative staff. There are 6 cafeterias in

Florya Campus and 3 Bahcelievler Campus that

serve affordable and healthy food to 5000 thousand

people at once. Also there are 6 garden cafeterias and

outdoors recreational areas.

The main campus has conference halls, auditoriums

for plays and other performances furbished with latest

technical equipment.

Indoors and outdoors sport complexes provide the

opportunity to play sports like football, basketball,

volleyball. There are two fitness centers for students

and staff.

There are numerous public and private dormitories for

female and male students around the Florya campus.

The IAU operates a brand new women’s dormitory

within easy reach of the campus.

The Clinic offers emergency aid with doctors

and nurses available for 18 hours. The Guidance

and Pyschological Counselling Center provides

support for psychological well-being of

students and staff. Our students and their

parents can be treated at discounted rates at

Oral Health Application and Research Center

associated with IAU Faculty of Dentistry.

Work Placement Center facilitates on the job

training opportunities for students by arranging

work placements at companies/corporations/

foundations, who are “solution partners” of IAU.

Each student participates in work placement

once a week in the fall and spring semesters

and undertakes 30 to 60 days of summer

internship.

Alumni Orientation Center helps graduating

students make their career planning by

considering their aptitudes and education. It

aims to help alumni improve their employability

and the skills necessary for a successful career.

It provides connections between the alumni and

various prestigious companies.

IAU provides through its administrative offices many support services to its students and staff.

Continuing Education and Research Center contributes to the skilled labor of the country by means of consultancy service and training in the areas of communications, organization and management, social skills, and professional competences. It organizes certificate programs for both IAU students and different occupational groups, and tailor-made corporate trainings.
